LEGO sets can rise in resale value, but the evidence does not make them a reliable investment for an individual collector. Historical studies report strong average gains in specific past samples, and recent resale-price estimates show increases after retirement. Neither proves what you will earn: estimated values are not completed sales, results vary widely, and costs can consume returns. Buy sets because you want to build or collect them; treat appreciation as uncertain upside.
What the evidence says about LEGO investment returns
Academic studies describe historical returns, not future ones
A 2022 study by Victoria Dobrynskaya and Julia Kishilova, covering LEGO sets from 1987 through 2015, reported an average annual return of at least 11%, or 8% after inflation, for its sample. It also reported a positive multifactor alpha of 4%–5% and a Sharpe ratio of 0.4. Those are findings for that study and period, not an expected return for a set bought today or an after-cost result for an individual collector. Read the study record.
A 2020 study by Shanaev, Shimkus, Ghimire, and Sharma examined LEGO as an alternative investment while addressing survivorship bias in earlier work. Its abstract reports higher yields for smaller sets and sets with lower price-to-piece ratios, and higher returns for older sets, which the authors describe as a liquidity effect. These historical associations do not establish a dependable buying formula. The publisher’s full text is restricted on the opened record, so its accessible abstract does not support stronger claims about the findings. Read the article record and abstract.

Brickfact’s study, with a data cutoff of September 4, 2026, compares estimated market values for sealed sets in their retirement month with estimates at later intervals. The figures below are changes in estimated value, not realized investor returns. Qualification counts vary by period because sets needed sufficient price observations in both comparison months.

All figures in the table are Brickfact estimates with a September 4, 2026 data cutoff. The 120-month result describes older retirement cohorts, not current releases or a forecast for sets retiring now. Brickfact says its results show an association and do not prove that retirement caused prices to rise. Its estimates do not match owners’ purchase prices to later completed sales and do not deduct fees, postage, storage, taxes, damage, or inflation. Why a price increase is not the same as a profit
A resale estimate or listing price does not tell you what a buyer will actually pay. To judge a set, compare your all-in acquisition cost with plausible completed-sale proceeds for the same set, condition, and geography. Check how often comparable sets actually sell and how long they take to sell; an attractive quoted value may be hard to realize when buyers are scarce.

- Marketplace and payment fees, packing materials, and shipping to the buyer.
- Storage costs and the risk of box damage, moisture, or other condition changes.
- Applicable taxes on the sale or gain.
- The opportunity cost of keeping money tied up in inventory rather than using it elsewhere.
Annualize a return only if you know the holding period and account for when cash flows occurred. That calculation is your result for the transaction, not a market-wide LEGO return statistic. Brickfact’s estimated-price study does not provide an individual collector’s complete after-cost, after-tax comparison with diversified investments, so it cannot establish that LEGO is a superior substitute.

What to assess before buying a set to resell
Cost basis and demand
Start with the actual price you can buy at, not the manufacturer’s retail price. Consider whether buyers want that particular set and whether similar or replacement sets remain available. Theme popularity can provide context, but it cannot identify future winners.
WILCO Toys estimated the LEGO resale market at $705 million in 2024, using tracked sales on eBay and BrickLink, selected brick-and-mortar stores, and additional inputs for its total-market estimate. It estimated that new-in-box sets represented about 30% of resale activity, while parts and minifigures together made up almost 60%. These are WILCO estimates, not an independently audited census. WILCO named Star Wars, Collectible Minifigures, Super Heroes, Creator, and NINJAGO among popular aftermarket themes in its 2024 account; that is not a ranking of likely investment winners. Retirement timing and holding period
A set leaving production does not guarantee an immediate price rise. Retailers may still have stock after production ends, and future supply, competing sets, and buyer interest affect the resale market. WILCO notes that retirement timing depends on multiple factors and is not known with certainty; this is secondary-market commentary, not a statement of LEGO Group policy. Have a reason to hold a set for your chosen period beyond the assumption that retirement itself creates scarcity.
Condition and completeness
Brickfact’s price study covers sealed sets. A built set, a set missing pieces or minifigures, and a sealed set with a damaged box are different resale propositions. Do not apply sealed-set estimates to them without comparable completed sales for the relevant condition.

Liquidity and concentration
Value matters only if you can find a buyer at a price that leaves you ahead after costs. Thinly traded sets may take longer to sell or force a lower price, and Brickfact warns that sets without enough observations may be underrepresented. Avoid tying up more money in sets than you can afford to keep holding, and consider how a collection concentrated in one theme or release could be affected by changing demand.

For an adult who enjoys building, displaying, or collecting, possible resale value can be a welcome bonus. For someone buying solely to make money, the combination of uncertain demand, uneven outcomes, holding costs, and resale friction makes the proposition difficult to assess from headline appreciation figures alone. LEGO Group revenue is not evidence of secondary-market returns: the company reported DKK 74.3 billion in revenue in 2024, up 13% year on year, a measure of company performance rather than collector profitability. If you choose to sell, use current marketplace data rather than relying on an estimate alone. eBay’s official Partner Network information explains that partners can link to listings, search results, and other eBay pages; actual listing availability, condition, and completed-sale comparables still need to be checked.
