Not automatically. A leatherette top does not reveal what touches the floor, and it does not confirm that a mat is compatible with a particular hardwood finish. Check the mat’s hard-floor rating and backing, then confirm the contact materials with the flooring manufacturer before using it.
Why “leatherette” does not answer the safety question
Leatherette describes the mat’s surface, not necessarily its underside. The sources available do not test leatherette chair mats against hardwood finishes, so the label alone cannot establish whether a particular mat may slip, mark, or otherwise affect a floor.
Compatibility depends on the exact mat, its floor-contact backing and dyes, the hardwood’s finish, and both manufacturers’ instructions. Do not assume that a leatherette top means the backing is safe for wood.

Confirm the mat is intended for hard floors
Look for instructions that identify the specific model as suitable for hard flooring or wood. A mat described only for carpet may have a backing unsuitable for hardwood. The Floortex Ecotex BioPVC product information, for example, identifies that particular product for hard-floor surfaces including wood; that claim applies to the named product, not to leatherette mats generally.

Match backing and slip control to the floor
Floor Protection Mats – Selection, Use & Care recommends smooth mats for smooth hard floors such as wood, tile, linoleum, and vinyl. For smooth, high-gloss floors such as polished wood, it recommends smooth mats with anti-slip backing to prevent slippage. It also warns against using spiked mats intended for carpet on wooden floors. The backing should be suitable for both the floor surface and the mat maker’s instructions.
Check the hardwood maker’s guidance about contact materials
Tarkett North America advises using chair pads approved for hardwood wherever casters move repeatedly, including under desk chairs. Its care guidance also warns that rubber backing and dyes in mats or rugs can discolor flooring, and recommends checking compatibility with the flooring manufacturer. Ask about the exact mat backing and finish rather than relying on a general claim that a mat is “wood-safe.”

Keep both surfaces clean and dry
ULINE’s instructions for its PVC hard-surface mat say dust and cleaning-product residue can affect grip, and direct users to ensure the mat and floor are clean and dry before use. Follow the care directions for your specific mat and floor; this supplier instruction is not a guarantee for other products.
Make sure the mat covers the rolling area
Position a mat to cover the area where the chair repeatedly rolls. The sources do not establish a universal size, so base coverage on the chair’s movement and desk layout.

How to choose between actual products
Use this checklist for any candidate, including one marketed as leatherette:
- Does the maker identify the exact model as suitable for hard floors or wood?
- What material is on the underside, and does the flooring maker permit it on your floor and finish?
- For polished or high-gloss wood, does the maker specify compatible anti-slip backing?
- Can you keep the mat and floor clean and dry, as the instructions require?
- Does the mat cover the chair’s regular rolling path?
Product descriptions can help identify intended use, but they do not prove universal compatibility. For example, ULINE describes its PVC hard-surface mat as having a textured underside that grips hardwood. That is a supplier description of one product, not independent evidence about every mat or every hardwood coating.

What to ask the manufacturers
- Ask the mat maker whether the exact model is approved for your type of hardwood and whether it specifies a smooth or anti-slip backing.
- Ask what material and dyes contact the floor, then check those details with the flooring manufacturer for your floor and finish.
- Follow the mat and floor care instructions for cleaning, drying, and use under rolling chairs.
If either maker cannot confirm compatibility for the specific combination, do not treat the leatherette label or a broad “hard-floor” claim as proof. Choose a chair pad approved for your hardwood by its manufacturer.
