No. The June 14, 2016 Futurism report described talks between Jetpack Aviation and U.S. special-forces interests, plus a reported research-and-development agreement involving U.S. Special Operations Command. It did not document a procurement decision, operational deployment, or plan to make jetpacks standard equipment for U.S. soldiers.
What the headline means—and what it does not
“One step closer” referred to reported development discussions, not a completed military program. The article said Jetpack Aviation was in talks with U.S. special forces and that the Wall Street Journal had reported an R&D agreement concerning a four-turbine military jetpack. An R&D agreement is evidence that a capability is being explored; it is not evidence of a contract to equip troops.
The source does not establish testing results, a production order, a training pipeline, a safety certification, or a fielding date. It also contains no verified verbatim quotation from a named military official, regulator, or standards body.
What was reported about Jetpack Aviation’s JB9
Futurism identified the JB9 as Jetpack Aviation’s then-current version. The following figures are historical claims printed in that 2016 article, not current independently verified specifications, prices, or availability.
#1 Best Overall
- From the first live-action drama series "Mandalorian" of "Star Wars", the main character "Mandalorian" is made into a plastic model on a 1/12 scale with various accessories!
- The jetpack on the back can be attached or removed. The joints can be used to attach the Beskar spear and designated blaster to its back
- The characteristic cloak is reproduced with cloth material parts
- Various Hand Parts, Various Joints, And A Designated Display Base Are Included
- [Set Contents] Dedicated blaster x 2 types, Vesca Spear x 1, Dark saver x 1, Cloak x 1, Hand parts: Gun handle (right), rifle handle (right), weapon handle (right), flat hand (left), Joint parts x 1 set, Dedicated display base x 1
| Attribute | Figure reported in Futurism (June 2016) | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Construction | Aluminum and carbon fiber | Description in the 2016 article; no current materials specification is established here. |
| Weight | 85 pounds | Reported JB9 weight in that article; configuration and measurement conditions were not detailed. |
| Fuel use | 11 gallons for a 10-minute flight | Reported consumption and endurance pairing; the article does not provide a test protocol or mission profile. |
| Development spending | About $10 million | Amount reported as spent on development by 2016; it is not a government appropriation or procurement value. |
| Intended market price | About $250,000 per unit | Planned price cited in 2016, not a current quote or proof of commercial availability. |
Why development work is not standard issue
Exploration
Special-operations organizations routinely investigate technologies that might solve narrow problems. A study, demonstration, or R&D agreement can be used to learn about performance, logistics, training, and risk without committing to buy the system.
Procurement
Adoption would require a defined military requirement, funded acquisition, contracting documentation, testing, sustainment planning, and a decision to purchase. None of those steps is documented for the JB9 in the cited report.

- The Mandalorian, The Protagonist From The First Live-Action Star Wars Series Is Available As A 1/12 Scale Plastic Model Kit With A Wide Variety Of Accessories
- The Jetpack On The Back Can Be Attached Or Removed. The Joints Can Be Used To Attach The Beskar Spear And Designated Blaster To Its Back
- A Wide Variety Of Weapons That Were Used In Various Scenes Are Included
- Various Hand Parts, Various Joints, And A Designated Display Base Are Included
- The product box will have a Bandai Namco warning label, which is proof that you are purchasing an officially licensed product
Fielding and standardization
“Standard equipment” implies an approved item issued through a military supply and training system. The 2016 story does not report unit issue, operational deployment, an inventory designation, or an order for U.S. soldiers.
How the other flying devices in the story fit
Futurism also mentioned the Martin Jetpack, Yves “Jetman” Rossy’s jetwing, and Franky Zapata’s Flyboard Air. They are different designs with different control methods, propulsion, endurance, and operating constraints. The article did not test them under common conditions, so its figures should not be treated as a current military comparison or performance ranking.
Rank #3
- The Mandalorian, The Protagonist From The First Live-Action Star Wars Series Is Available As A 1/12 Scale Plastic Model Kit With A Wide Variety Of Accessories
- He Mandalorian'S Iconic Silver Beskar Armor Has Been Recreated With A Hefty Silver Coating
- The Jetpack On The Back Can Be Attached Or Removed. The Joints Can Be Used To Attach The Beskar Spear And Designated Blaster To Its Back
- Various Hand Parts, Various Joints, And A Designated Display Base Are Included
| Device named in the 2016 article | Figure or description reported there | Comparison caveat |
|---|---|---|
| Martin Jetpack | Flight time of up to 30 minutes | “Up to” is a stated maximum; the article gives no shared test conditions with the JB9. |
| Jetman jetwing | 322 kph (200 mph) and about 10 minutes of flight | Speed and endurance are reported historical figures for a jetwing, not evidence of suitability for soldier carriage or missions. |
| Flyboard Air | Named as another flying device | The article’s brief mention does not supply a controlled specification set for comparison. |
What would prove that jetpacks were becoming standard
- An official requirement or acquisition announcement identifying the capability and intended users.
- A public contract, budget line, or production award rather than an exploratory agreement.
- Documented safety, aviation, and logistics testing, including fuel handling and maintenance procedures.
- Training and qualification rules for operators, instructors, and maintainers.
- Evidence of delivery or unit-level fielding, such as an approved equipment listing or deployment record.
The Futurism report supplies none of these standardization indicators. It supports the narrower conclusion that military users were reportedly interested in evaluating jetpack technology in 2016.
Did the U.S. military adopt the JB9?
The cited article does not document adoption of Jetpack Aviation’s JB9 by the U.S. military. It reports talks and development activity, not a purchase, standard issue decision, or operational fielding. Because the figures and program status are from June 2016, they should not be read as confirmation of the device’s current specifications, price, availability, or military status.

Bottom line for readers
The accurate reading of the 2016 headline is “the U.S. military was reportedly exploring jetpack technology,” not “soldiers were about to receive jetpacks.” The story is a snapshot of an early development discussion, and it does not establish that jetpacks became—or were on a documented path to become—standard U.S. military equipment.
