Sometimes. If one showroom closes but the retailer still operates, another branch or its website may accept the balance. If the entire business closes or enters bankruptcy, the balance may become unusable even if the card has not expired. The answer also depends on your state and on whether you have a purchased gift card, return credit, promotional credit, or a deposit for undelivered furniture.

Does a furniture store closure cancel a gift card?

Not necessarily. A single location closing does not mean the entire chain has stopped operating. Contact the retailer or check its website to confirm whether another branch, online store, or acquiring company will accept the balance. Ask specifically about each redemption option rather than assuming a card works everywhere.

If the whole retailer has shut down, redemption may be difficult or impossible. Oregon’s Department of Justice cautions that a local-store closure or bankruptcy may make a gift card unusable regardless of its printed expiration date. Federal expiration protections do not guarantee that a closed merchant can redeem the balance. Oregon DOJ: Gift Cards and 12 CFR § 1005.20.

What kind of balance do you have?

The label “store credit” can describe different arrangements. The distinction matters because state rules and federal Regulation E treat certain instruments differently.

HomeGoods Physical Gift Card

  • Score incredible savings on decor from around the world, quality furniture, top-brand bedding & bath, gourmet foods and more.
  • Every aisle is stocked with an everchanging selection of exceptional finds—even for pets!
  • The TJX gift card is redeemable at over 3300 HomeGoods, TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Sierra, and Homesense stores (in the U.S. and Puerto Rico)
  • Physical gift cards are delivered active via mail.
Balance type What to establish
Purchased gift card Whether you bought it for money, its terms, and whether the retailer is currently accepting it.
Return or merchandise credit Whether it is a credit memo issued for returned goods and what state law says about that instrument. Florida, for example, expressly defines credit memos and regulates them alongside gift certificates. Florida Statutes § 501.95 (2026).
Promotional credit Whether it is a promotional instrument rather than a purchased balance; terms and legal treatment may differ.
Deposit on furniture not delivered Whether the payment was a deposit for an unfulfilled order, rather than a gift-card balance. Do not assume the same rules apply.

Federal Regulation E defines covered gift certificates and store gift cards and includes exclusions. A return credit, promotional card, or undelivered-order deposit may not fit the same category as a purchased gift card; check the instrument’s terms and the relevant state law.

How bankruptcy and state law can change the outcome

Bankruptcy or a court-supervised closing sale can affect when and how a retailer accepts balances. If the company has filed for bankruptcy, look for official case notices and deadlines promptly. A Connecticut attorney general alert from 2019, for example, urged consumers to use Gymboree, Crazy 8, and Janie and Jack gift cards and merchandise credits before specified bankruptcy-related store closures. That was advice about those companies and that case, not a current policy for other retailers. Connecticut Attorney General’s 2019 alert.

  • California: The California Attorney General’s 2020 consumer guidance says California law requires businesses to honor gift certificates even if they file bankruptcy. Check current law and the facts of the particular case. California DOJ: Gift Cards.
  • New York: General Business Law § 396-i addresses acceptance of gift certificates and store credit during closing-out or defunct-business sales, and says terms may not be changed after issuance. Apply the statute’s current text and conditions to a New York situation. New York General Business Law § 396-i.
  • Florida: Section 501.95’s 2026 text includes credit memos issued in exchange for returned merchandise. It illustrates why return credit may be a distinct instrument; it does not decide cases in other states. Florida Statutes § 501.95.

For your own case, identify the state whose law applies, the type of balance, and whether the retailer is still operating, in bankruptcy, or liquidating. Your state attorney general’s consumer-protection office can point you to applicable guidance.

What to do if your furniture store closed

  1. Check for another redemption route. Visit the retailer’s official website or contact customer service or an open location. Ask whether the balance works in-store, online, at another branch, or with an acquiring company.
  2. Save the response and check again if needed. If the retailer is not currently accepting the balance, keep its written response and check periodically for a policy change. Michigan consumer guidance notes that a retailer may resume acceptance and that a competitor may sometimes honor a card. Michigan consumer guidance on gift cards.
  3. Keep proof. Preserve the card or electronic account, terms, receipt, proof of balance, order documents, screenshots, communications, and closure or bankruptcy notices. Keep records of each attempt to redeem.
  4. For a bankruptcy, check official notices promptly. Look for current case information and deadlines; do not rely on old announcements about a different retailer.
  5. If you paid by credit card for furniture that was never delivered, contact the issuer promptly. Ask about dispute or chargeback options. North Carolina’s Department of Justice says a refund may be possible, but it is not guaranteed and deadlines and eligibility depend on the transaction and issuer. North Carolina DOJ: Credit Card Chargebacks.
