Free VPNs are not automatically unsafe, but using one means trusting its operator with your routed internet traffic. Before connecting, check what the service protects, what information it collects and shares, which permissions it requests, and whether independent security evidence covers the product you plan to use. A VPN can change which intermediary sees your traffic; it does not make you anonymous.
What a VPN can—and cannot—protect
A VPN routes covered traffic through servers controlled by the provider. This can shift visibility away from your internet provider or a local Wi-Fi operator and toward the VPN operator. The Federal Trade Commission cautions that VPN apps do not all encrypt information, and some may encrypt only part of it. Check what traffic the particular app covers rather than assuming that installing a VPN protects everything on your device. FTC guidance on VPN apps
A VPN is not an anonymity tool. Websites may still identify you through account sign-ins, information you submit, cookies, or other identifying details. A VPN changes the network path and can mask your IP address from sites, but it cannot undo information you choose to share.

The VPN operator may be in a position to handle traffic routed through its service, so its privacy practices matter. Free pricing by itself does not prove that a provider sells user data. However, advertising, third-party sharing, and routing traffic through third parties are documented risks to investigate in the provider’s privacy policy and terms. Look for concrete disclosures: what data is collected, how long it is retained, whether it is shared with other companies, how advertising works, and whether another party owns or routes the service. Treat a “no logs” slogan as a claim to verify, not proof on its own.
Check coverage, limits, permissions, and security evidence
Use these checks before installing or connecting:
- Coverage: Determine whether the VPN protects the whole device, selected apps, or only a browser. Confirm whether your intended apps’ traffic is routed through it.
- Data limits: Find out whether usage is capped and how the service defines its allowance and reset period.
- Encryption and protocol: Look for clear information about which traffic is encrypted and which protocols or protections are used. Do not assume every connection is covered.
- Privacy terms: Check collection, retention, sharing, advertising, and any third-party ownership or routing arrangements.
- Permissions: Review requested app permissions and question access that appears unrelated to VPN operation.
- Independent audits: Note who performed the audit, its date, the product and version reviewed, its scope, findings, and any remediation. An audit of a client app does not automatically verify the provider’s servers or every privacy claim.
- Provider accountability: Look for a clearly identified operator and policies that explain how it handles user data. A store listing or privacy slogan alone is not independent evidence.
Example: Firefox’s built-in VPN is browser-only
Mozilla’s built-in Firefox VPN is a useful example of why scope matters. Mozilla Support describes it as a free feature that routes Firefox browser traffic through a secure proxy and masks the IP address. It has a 50 GB limit per calendar month and is being introduced in a staged rollout. It does not cover traffic from other apps on the device. Mozilla says the built-in feature may record whether a connection succeeded or failed and how much data was used on a given day, while stating that it does not log visited sites or communication content. Check the current support documentation for availability and product details.
How to interpret VPN audit and privacy claims
Audits are evidence about a defined product, scope, and point in time—not a permanent guarantee. Mozilla reports that Cure53 audited Mozilla VPN apps in 2023 and that the listed findings rated medium or higher were addressed. That report concerns the reviewed apps and period; it does not establish the security of every free VPN, future releases, server infrastructure, or all privacy practices. Mozilla’s separate documentation for the paid Mozilla VPN service describes limited usage statistics and diagnostics, and explains how users can turn off technical data collection and delete historical information. A free VPN may be suitable if its documented coverage matches your need and you are comfortable with its limits and data practices. A browser-only feature, for example, may be enough when you need protection for browser traffic but not other apps. If you need broader device coverage or a larger allowance, compare services on those specific terms alongside privacy and security evidence. Paying for a VPN may be reasonable for broader coverage, but payment alone does not establish that a provider is trustworthy.
