Foldable and flip phones are not automatically more fragile, but their hinges and flexible inner screens add durability concerns that conventional slab phones do not have. The available manufacturer claims do not establish that foldables fail more often in everyday use. Buyers should compare the exact model’s test claims, screen-care guidance, ingress rating and repair terms rather than assume one design is always tougher.
What “durability” means for a folding phone
Durability is not one test. Repeated opening and closing, accidental drops, dust exposure, water exposure and repairability are different concerns. A strong result in one category does not establish protection in another: a hinge-cycle count is not a drop test, and a water-resistance rating does not necessarily include dust protection.
The published figures below come from manufacturers or manufacturer-described testing, not a common independent test program. They describe specific models and conditions, so they are useful context—not a reliable head-to-head durability ranking or a prediction of an individual phone’s lifespan.
What hinge-cycle claims tell you
A fold-cycle count indicates how many opening-and-closing cycles a device or hinge was tested to withstand under stated conditions. It does not measure drops, establish ordinary-use failure rates or guarantee how long a particular owner’s phone will last.

Because the claims come from different manufacturers and are not presented as results from one standardized independent test, the counts should not be treated as a league table. Samsung’s 2023 description of testing for the Galaxy Z Flip5 and Fold5 lists folding, tumble, water-resistance, environmental-chamber, drop and steel-ball-drop categories, but does not publish detailed outcomes for those tests on the page. Flexible screens, cover glass and drop risk
A foldable’s inner display and its outer cover screen are different components. Protective films and multi-layer constructions may be part of a design, but a claim about cover-screen glass does not show that the flexible inner display is drop-proof.

For example, OPPO says the Find N5’s cover-display drop resistance improves by up to 20% and its described nine-layer screen has a 70% increase in impact resistance. Check dust and water protection on the exact model
Ingress protection varies by model. Samsung says the Galaxy Z Fold3 and Z Flip3 are IPX8 water-resistant but not dust-resistant, and advises avoiding sand and small particles. Samsung’s Fold6 business article states an IP48 rating. These model-specific claims should not be generalized to every foldable, and an IPX8 rating should not be read as dust protection.
Check the rating and care guidance for the exact phone you are considering. Also distinguish a stated resistance rating from warranty coverage: a rating alone does not tell you whether a particular kind of liquid or dust damage will be covered.

How to compare foldables before buying
- Identify the failure you most want to avoid. For hinge wear, look for a cycle-test claim and its conditions. For drops, check the specific inner and outer screen construction and the repair terms; a fold count does not answer this question.
- Read the model-specific screen-care guidance. For the Galaxy Z Fold3 and Z Flip3, Samsung says to keep the main-display protective film attached and avoid sharp pressure or objects between the screens. Treat this as guidance for those models, not automatic instructions for every foldable.
- Verify water and dust ratings separately. Find the exact model’s stated ingress rating and care advice. Do not infer dust protection from water resistance.
- Compare repair and replacement terms. Check the current screen-replacement cost, warranty exclusions and any protection offer in your country before purchase. Samsung’s Fold6 business article mentions a one-time discounted screen replacement under Galaxy Z Assurance, but that page does not establish current regional availability, eligibility or price.
- Confirm regional availability and terms. Manufacturer claims and protection programs can be specific to a model or market. Use the local product and support pages for the version you can actually buy.
Is a folding phone a sensible choice?
A foldable may suit someone who values its compact flip form or larger book-style inner display and is comfortable checking model-specific care and repair details. A conventional slab phone avoids the folding hinge and flexible inner display, but the evidence cited here does not establish that either form factor has a lower everyday failure rate. Choose based on the risks that matter to you and the specific protections, care requirements and repair costs attached to the model—not the design category alone.
