Yes, “dumbphones” are having a visible cultural comeback—but the evidence does not show a broad reversal in smartphone adoption. Interest is strongest around digital minimalism, retro flip-phone design and reducing screen time. Global feature-phone sales remain substantial, but were gradually declining as consumers in developing markets upgraded to smartphones. The term “dumbphone” is also used loosely for basic phones, feature phones with some connected features, and deliberately limited smartphones, so attention around the trend is not the same as a single category of phone sales.

What the numbers say about the comeback

Counterpoint Research estimates that feature phones accounted for about 15% of handsets sold globally in 2024: approximately 210 million devices, with a reported value of $3.2 billion. Those figures cover markets and uses around the world; they do not measure the digital-minimalist niche in the United States.

In Counterpoint’s 2025 article reporting 2024 sales, senior analyst Yang Wang said North America sold 1.7 million feature phones and Europe sold 12 million. Europe’s total was concentrated largely in Central and Eastern Europe. These regional figures show that feature phones still have practical markets, but do not establish a mass return to basic phones in wealthier markets.

Company results offer a different, narrower signal. Human Mobile Devices (HMD) reported double-digit growth in its own feature-phone category in 2024 compared with 2023, while describing the overall feature-phone market as declining. That is evidence of HMD’s performance, not an industry-wide upswing.

HMD’s February 2025 release also said its flip-phone sales doubled globally in fiscal year 2022/2023. It cited the Nokia 2660 Flip’s relaunch in new colors in 2023 and said the Barbie-branded flip phone it launched with Mattel in 2024 repeatedly sold out in the U.S. and U.K. The release did not give audited unit counts for those products, and these examples are not 2026 sales results. HMD also cited 61 million views for a TikTok hashtag; views indicate attention, not how many people bought or kept using a phone.

Together, these figures support a comeback in cultural visibility and some product niches, not a demonstrated mass-market shift. Global feature-phone totals cannot be used as a proxy for a Gen Z digital-detox movement: feature phones also serve affordability and communication needs in markets where smartphone upgrades are still changing the mix.

Why people are interested—and what the evidence does not prove

Reported motivations include reducing screen time, avoiding notifications and habitual app use, choosing a more intentional relationship with technology, and liking retro designs. Those motives help explain why simple phones attract attention, but stated interest does not show that buyers will keep using one.

The Atlantic reported figures from Mintel analyst Michael Lloy: 69% of 18-to-34-year-olds and 58% of adults overall were actively trying to reduce screen time. Lloy also estimated that about 6% of surveyed mobile-phone users had a dumbphone, with most of those owners barely or never using it. These are figures attributed to the analyst through The Atlantic, not independently verified purchase data; the screen-time figures measure intention, not dumbphone adoption.

MIDiA Research’s public summary says two-thirds of consumers tried to reduce screen time in Q1 2024. It also reports that 21% turned to physical formats and 23% to in-person activities. These numbers describe broader screen-time intentions and responses, not phone sales or dumbphone ownership.

MIDiA frames dumbphone use among people under 25 as part of a broader desire to spend less time on screens and reconnect with offline life. In The Atlantic’s October 2025 feature, digital-minimalism creator Jose Briones offered his personal view: “I don’t think it’s nostalgia,” he said. “People, especially young people, are tired of being harmed without their consent.” That quotation expresses one person’s interpretation; it is not evidence that phones cause a measured harm or that switching improves wellbeing.

The Atlantic also described people returning to smartphones when college, transport, banking or other services depended on apps. Those accounts illustrate a practical limit rather than predict every switcher’s experience. The available evidence does not establish that using a dumbphone improves mental health, sleep, school performance or productivity.

Not all “dumbphones” are equally simple

The label can cover very different devices. Before switching, decide whether the priority is a strong barrier to apps and feeds, access to a few connected services, or simply using a familiar smartphone less often.

Option What it can offer Main trade-off to check
Basic feature phone The strongest limits on apps and feeds. Confirm carrier bands, voice and SMS support, and access to essential services such as maps or payments.
App-capable or “smart” feature phone Selected messaging or connected functions without the full smartphone experience. Check that it supports the exact apps and services you depend on; the category does not guarantee a particular app.
Smartphone with focus or detox controls Familiar services with software limits on use. It may be easier to adopt, but the same device and many of its distractions remain within reach.
Dumbphone as a companion device A simpler phone for selected outings or breaks while keeping a smartphone for maps, payments, work or emergencies. It reduces use rather than replacing the smartphone, and means carrying or managing two devices.

How to decide whether a switch will work for you

  1. List the services you cannot lose. Include messaging, navigation, transit, banking, payments, work and emergency needs. Check whether each works on the specific phone you are considering.
  2. Choose how much friction you want. A basic feature phone restricts apps most; a smart feature phone retains selected connections; smartphone controls preserve familiar access; a companion phone lets you take breaks without giving up your smartphone.
  3. Check network support for your location. Verify the exact model’s carrier compatibility and voice/SMS support before buying. Older listings that rely only on 2G or 3G may not work where those networks have been retired.
  4. Consider the routine, not just the device. Decide when you will use the simpler phone and what you will do when an app-dependent task comes up. A companion arrangement may suit someone who needs a smartphone for work or travel; a replacement may make sense when essential tasks are supported without it.
  5. Check current product availability and features. Product status, carrier compatibility and connected functions vary by model and market. Do not assume that a phone described as “smart” or “feature” supports a particular app, payment method or network.

Feature phones are changing, not standing still

The category is not fixed at calls and texts. In March 2026, HMD announced plans for smart-feature-phone additions including a digital wallet, video calling and an AI assistant, emphasizing inclusion and access. The announcement illustrates how connected features can expand while a device remains distinct from a full smartphone. HMD said it would share more availability and partnership details through 2026, so the announcement alone does not establish which features or products are currently available to buy.

Design is part of the appeal, too. In HMD’s February 2025 press release, its VP of Design Raun Forsyth described feature phones as a “design icon” and a fashion statement, particularly among Gen Z. That is the manufacturer’s perspective on its products, not an independent measure of the trend.

Verdict: a real niche trend, not a proven mass return

Dumbphones are back in the conversation—and retro design, screen-time concerns and deliberate limits help explain why. But the best available sales context does not show a broad return from smartphones: global feature-phone sales were large in 2024 yet gradually declining, and HMD’s growth claims apply to HMD. Treat the comeback as cultural visibility and niche use, then choose a device based on the apps, network support and daily tasks you can realistically give up.
