Samsung documents options for animated wallpapers, Always On Display-to-lock-screen transitions, and notification effects; those are cosmetic effects, not evidence that an app replaces or changes the phone’s physical folding behavior or system-level transition.
What does a “custom fold animation” actually animate?
The name can describe several different effects: a moving wallpaper, a lock-screen transition, an incoming-notification animation, an app or window transition, or a visual representation of hinge movement. These are not interchangeable. Samsung’s documentation establishes the first three as personalization options, but does not establish that a third-party app can replace the system’s fold transition.
Samsung-documented effects
Samsung’s April 15, 2025 Good Lock feature overview describes Wonderland as a way to create animated wallpapers for the lock and home screens, plus transitions between Always On Display and the lock screen. Samsung separately describes Edge Lighting+ as allowing users to customize the image, color, and animation accompanying incoming notifications. These features add visual motion, but their documented scope does not show that they alter what happens when the device physically opens or closes.
App continuity and fold state
Fold behavior also includes how apps respond when the display configuration changes. Samsung’s app-continuity guidance explains that a resizable app can maintain continuity between the cover and main screens; an app that is not resizable may need to restart when the display area changes. That is app behavior, separate from a wallpaper or notification effect.

Samsung’s foldable design guidance recommends adapting app experiences for open, closed, and partially folded states. Its Flex Mode documentation addresses use while the phone is partially folded. An animation utility is not proof that an app handles those states correctly.
Is it safe to install a third-party animation app?
There is no general safety verdict for an unnamed app. Samsung’s guidance about continuity and foldable layouts explains device and app behavior; it does not certify third-party animation utilities. Before installing a particular app, check:

- Developer and source: Confirm who publishes it and install only from a distribution source you trust.
- Permissions: Compare each requested permission with the effect the app claims to provide. A permission that does not appear necessary for that function deserves scrutiny.
- Specific device and software: Look for recent compatibility reports for your exact Fold model and One UI release, not just a general claim that it supports “Galaxy” devices.
- What it changes: Determine whether it applies a wallpaper or notification effect, changes an app transition, or claims to modify system-level fold behavior. Treat the last claim as unverified unless the developer provides credible, specific evidence.
Will it work with your Galaxy Z Fold?
Compatibility depends on the app, Fold generation, Android and One UI versions, and how the app behaves across the cover display, main display, and partially folded state. Samsung’s Good Lock plugin overview instructs plugin creators to check support for the device’s One UI version; support should not be assumed across every device and release.
Android’s device compatibility mode guidance also notes that compatibility mode can apply to apps with orientation or resizability restrictions on large-screen and foldable devices. If an app behaves differently when you open or close the Fold, that may reflect the app’s layout or resizability support rather than the animation itself.

Does a custom animation affect battery life?
The cited official materials do not provide a measured battery cost for custom fold animations. There is no source-backed percentage to quote, and the effect may vary by app, animation type, settings, and usage. If you want to assess one app on your device, compare battery usage with its effect enabled and disabled during similar use. That is a personal comparison, not a controlled test or a published estimate.

It is a reasonable choice when you want a specific cosmetic effect, the app’s purpose and permissions make sense, and the developer supports your device and software. For a Samsung-documented starting point, explore Good Lock’s Wonderland for wallpaper and Always On Display-to-lock-screen effects, or Edge Lighting+ for notification visuals. If your goal is to change the phone’s physical folding motion or system-level fold transition, the cited Samsung feature descriptions do not show that these options do so.
