Some children and teens are already turning to AI for advice about worries, but that does not mean chatbots can diagnose or treat mental-health conditions. A UNICEF study across 10 countries found that up to half of surveyed children had used AI and one in ten had asked it for advice about things that worry them. For families, the useful response is a calm conversation about what a child is using, what they share, and when a trusted adult or qualified professional needs to step in.
Is my child using AI for mental-health advice?
Possibly. In a June 2026 snapshot by UNICEF’s Office of Strategy and Evidence – Innocenti, up to 50% of surveyed children said they used AI, and one in ten said they turned to it for advice about things that worry them. The study covered children in Armenia, Brazil, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Jordan, Mexico, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Pakistan, and Serbia. These are findings from those surveyed countries, not a global estimate of children’s AI use. UNICEF’s snapshot also found children were more than three times as likely as their parents or caregivers to use AI systems, suggesting adults may not know how often children encounter them.
Children may use chatbots for information, emotional support, advice, or companionship. UNICEF says their use is expanding into advice, support, and sometimes relationships, while evidence about children’s experiences and concerns remains sparse compared with adoption. Its June 2026 policy brief describes child-safety risks as a shared responsibility involving governments, technology companies, caregivers, educators, and communities—not something parents can manage alone.

A chatbot may feel easy to approach, and some young people appear to find conversations supportive. In a 2026 survey of more than 1,200 licensed U.S. psychologists, 68% of psychologists whose patients had ongoing chatbot conversations said they had discussed or noticed patients feeling supported or validated; 41% said patients used chatbots to reinforce healthy coping skills. Those are clinicians’ reports about their patients, not results from a clinical trial showing that chatbots improve mental-health outcomes. The APA survey does not establish that a general-purpose chatbot can provide treatment.

It helps to distinguish what kind of tool a child is using and what role it is being asked to play:
| Distinction | What it means for families |
|---|---|
| General-purpose chatbot vs. mental-health wellness tool | A general-purpose chatbot is not necessarily designed for mental-health support. A wellness product may be designed for that purpose, but its label alone does not prove it is safe or effective for a particular child. |
| Reflection or coping support vs. diagnosis or treatment | A tool may help a user put feelings into words or explore general coping ideas. Diagnosis and treatment claims require evidence specific to the product and should not be assumed from a conversational style. |
| Conversation with software vs. care from a qualified professional | Software can generate fluent, empathetic-sounding responses. That does not establish human understanding, clinical competence, or a therapeutic relationship. |
| Stated safeguards, privacy practices, and age suitability | Review the specific product’s safeguards and privacy information and whether it is appropriate for your child’s age. Protections vary by product; do not assume every chatbot handles sensitive conversations the same way. |
The American Psychological Association advises caregivers to learn about digital products and discuss their benefits and risks with children and adolescents. The APA’s health advisory is guidance for evaluating chatbots and wellness applications, not an endorsement of any product.

Should I worry if my child talks to AI instead of me?
Not automatically. A child may find it easier to type a worry into a chatbot, but a private-feeling exchange can also lead them to trust answers that are inaccurate, inappropriate, or beyond the tool’s abilities. The key is to understand what is happening without shaming or punishing the child for asking for help.
Start with curiosity and specific questions:
- “What do you use the chatbot for?”
- “What kinds of things do you ask it?”
- “Did its answer feel useful? Was anything confusing or upsetting?”
- “Have you shared personal details, photos, or information about someone else?”
- “If something serious came up, who would you feel comfortable talking to?”
Explain plainly that a warm or confident response is still generated by software. It does not prove the system understands the child, keeps a conversation confidential, or has the competence of a mental-health professional. Review the particular tool together rather than assuming all products have identical age rules, privacy practices, or safety features.

For wider context, WHO Europe’s 23 May 2025 policy brief says the evidence linking technology use with young people’s well-being is mixed: it includes both positive and negative associations, and vulnerable young people are more likely to experience negative effects. The brief addresses digital determinants broadly; it is not an evaluation of AI chatbot treatment. Read the WHO Europe policy brief.
What should I do if my teen tells a chatbot about self-harm?
Take the disclosure seriously and seek help from a licensed mental-health professional immediately. Do not treat a chatbot as a crisis service or as a substitute for care. The APA’s parent guidance recommends involving a qualified professional for serious mental-health or crisis concerns. Read the APA’s guidance for parents.

How can families make AI use safer?
There is no single setting or family rule that eliminates every risk. A practical approach combines open communication with attention to the specific tool and clear boundaries around serious concerns:
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Find out what the tool is. Ask your child to show you the app or service, what they use it for, and what kinds of answers it gives. Check its age suitability, privacy practices, and stated safeguards.
- Talk about trust and limits. Explain that fluent language is not proof of understanding, confidentiality, or clinical expertise. Encourage your child to check consequential advice with a trusted adult.
- Agree on what should not stay in a chatbot. Make clear that self-harm, suicidal thoughts, severe depression, or other urgent worries should be shared with a trusted adult and a qualified professional—not managed through software alone.
- Keep the conversation open. Revisit the subject without treating a child’s use of AI as wrongdoing. A child is more likely to bring you a troubling answer or experience if they expect help rather than punishment.
The APA recommends open discussions about the benefits and risks of digital products. UNICEF’s guidance emphasizes that protections also depend on companies, governments, educators, and communities. Parents can help children make informed choices, but should not be expected to control every feature or risk of products they do not design.
