No—Bose earbuds should not be treated as waterproof. Some models are water resistant, but the rating and Bose’s use guidance vary by model. In particular, Bose says its cited IPX4 earbuds are not meant to be submerged, and it advises against wearing them while swimming or showering. The charging case may have a different rating—or none.
What Bose water-resistance ratings mean in practice
“Bose earbuds” covers multiple models and generations, so a rating for one pair does not apply to another. IPX4 is a water-resistance rating, not a promise that earbuds can be immersed. Bose describes the QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen) as sweat and weather resistant but not meant to be submerged. Its guides caution against swimming or showering with the cited IPX4 earbuds. Bose’s QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen) specifications and user guide provide model-specific details.
How water resistant are each of these Bose models?
| Model | Bose-listed rating | Bose’s stated guidance |
|---|---|---|
| QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen) | Earbuds: IPX4; case: not water resistant | Not meant to be submerged; Bose cautions against swimming and showering. |
| QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds | IPX4 testing | Bose describes protection against sweat and splashing water from any angle; the case exterior should not be exposed to water. |
| Ultra Open Earbuds (original) | Earbuds: IPX4; case: IPX1 | Do not swim, shower, or submerge the earbuds. Do not splash or submerge the case. |
| Sport Open Earbuds (2026) | IP54 | Bose describes the rating as sweat, splash, and dust resistance; it is not an immersion claim. |
| Ultra Open Earbuds (2nd Gen, 2026) | IPX4 | Check the matching product guide for use limits; do not assume the case has the earbuds’ rating. |

Can you wear Bose earbuds in the rain?
Use the exact model’s rating and Bose’s instructions rather than assuming every pair is safe in wet conditions. Bose describes some IPX4 models as sweat and weather resistant, and the original Ultra Open Earbuds guide refers to light vertical rainfall for the case. That is not a blanket assurance for heavy rain, prolonged exposure, or other models. Follow the guide for your specific earbuds and keep the case’s separate limits in mind.

Can you shower or swim with Bose earbuds?
No. Bose’s cited IPX4 guidance says the earbuds are not meant to be submerged and cautions against swimming or showering with them. Do not use a water-resistance rating as permission to wear earbuds underwater or wash them.
Is the Bose earbud charging case waterproof?
Do not assume the case shares the earbuds’ rating. The QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen) case is listed as not water resistant. The original Ultra Open Earbuds case is rated IPX1, and Bose says not to splash or submerge it. For that model, Bose describes light water exposure such as light vertical rainfall, not general protection from water.

- Keep charging contacts clean and dry. Bose advises cleaning the contacts with a dry, soft cotton swab to help prevent corrosion.
- Check the user guide for the exact model before cleaning or using the earbuds in wet conditions.
- Remember that Bose says water resistance is not permanent and may decrease through normal wear.
