If “the best Blu-ray feature” means BD-Live, the internet-connected extras built into some Blu-ray releases, then parts of that experience may indeed be disappearing. BD-Live depended on online services, and some such services are no longer available. But the evidence does not establish that all BD-Live content is gone—or identify which individual discs still work. This interpretation is likely, not certain: the title does not name the feature.
What was BD-Live?
Blu-ray offered interactive features as well as high-definition video. BD-Live, also known as Profile 2.0, added internet-based features to compatible discs and players. Depending on the disc, those features could include online extras or other connected content; the available account does not provide a complete catalogue of what each release offered.
BD-Live was distinct from Bonus View, or Profile 1.1. Bonus View provided local interactivity through the disc and player, while BD-Live depended on an internet connection and online services. Gough’s Tech Zone’s January 24, 2026 retrospective notes that not all users had an Ethernet connection, a practical barrier to using connected features at the time. |---|---|---|---|
| Bonus View | 1.1 | Local disc and compatible player interactivity; no external online service is inherent to the feature. | The retrospective describes it as local. It does not provide a current compatibility or title-by-title availability list. |
| BD-Live | 2.0 | Internet-connected features and services, in addition to a compatible disc and player. | The retrospective says some online services are no longer available, but does not identify them or inventory surviving services. |
Are BD-Live features still available on Blu-ray discs?
Some may still work, but availability cannot be determined for Blu-ray as a whole from the evidence available. Gough’s Tech Zone reports that some online services associated with Blu-ray are no longer available and says it seems likely that some BD-Live content has been lost. That is a likelihood in a personal retrospective, not a documented count or service-by-service audit.

So the practical answer depends on the particular disc and the external service it uses. The retrospective does not provide a current list of working BD-Live titles, active servers, or discontinued services. It would be inaccurate to conclude that every BD-Live feature has vanished, or that any specific feature remains available.
Why the disc and player may not be enough
A physical disc can retain its on-disc material even when a connected extra no longer works. A compatible player can provide the hardware needed to use BD-Live, but it cannot by itself restore an unavailable external service. This is the key difference from local Bonus View interactivity: a locally stored feature does not inherently rely on a remote service, while a network-dependent one can be affected when that service is no longer available.

- Enjoy Blu-ray Disc movies in Full HD as well as DVD discs
- Upscale your DVDs to near HD quality
- Easy set-up with included HDMI cord
- Boot up in less than a second with super quick start mode
- Keep things simple with the new user-friendly interface
The available source does not establish that buying a BD-Live-capable player, another copy of a disc, or disc-repair equipment can recover missing server-dependent content. Those purchases should not be treated as a way to restore an offline service.
What is known—and what remains uncertain
- Established: the retrospective distinguishes local Bonus View/Profile 1.1 interactivity from internet-based BD-Live/Profile 2.0 features.
- Reported: some online services associated with Blu-ray are no longer available.
- Not established: how much BD-Live content has been lost, which services have gone offline, or the current status of any particular title.
Because the title does not specify a feature, BD-Live is the strongest evidence-backed interpretation rather than a confirmed statement of authorial intent. The available evidence supports concern about the fragility of connected extras, not a claim that Blu-ray’s interactive features as a whole have disappeared.
