At-home microcurrent devices may offer mild improvements, but the available evidence does not establish dramatic or lasting facial rejuvenation. Before spending hundreds, check the exact model’s evidence, instructions, safety guidance, and whether it requires conductive gel. The safety data also have important limits: reported adverse events are signals to take seriously, not proof of causation or a measure of how often problems happen.
What results can you reasonably expect?
Dermatologists quoted in a NuFace-hosted article describe at-home microcurrent as more suited to mild improvements and maintenance than dramatic change. Hannah Kopelman, a dermatologist quoted there, says the devices “work best for mild improvements and maintenance, rather than dramatic changes.” Because NuFace hosts the article, treat the comments as attributed expert guidance in a promotional context—not independent comparative evidence.
The available studies do not establish that at-home microcurrent produces lasting facial rejuvenation. Kadam and Lipner’s 2026 research letter says the trials it discusses were small and short, with no more than 12 weeks of follow-up. A broader 2022 systematic review covered 37 studies and 1,871 patients across multiple categories of home dermatology devices; those totals are not specific to microcurrent. Its search ended November 9, 2020, and it noted gaps in randomized trials and long-term safety and efficacy data.

What the safety reports do—and do not—show
Kadam and Lipner queried the FDA’s MAUDE database on April 15, 2025, for reports dated January 1, 2013, through March 31, 2025. They identified 28 unique reports associated with selected at-home microcurrent brands: 25 involving NuFace devices, two involving TheraFace PRO, and one involving FOREO BEAR. The authors wrote that “the largely unregulated at-home microcurrent device market lacks robust, large-scale safety data.”

The reports included complaints such as arrhythmia, pain, dizziness, headache, inflammation, overheating, and one report of retinal detachment. These are report contents, not confirmed device-caused injuries. MAUDE is a passive reporting database: the authors say there is no known denominator of users, severe events may be more likely to be reported, and the selected, small sample cannot establish event rates or support comparisons between brands.
The letter also discusses two small trials: one with 56 participants reported mild erythema in the experimental group, while another with 30 participants reported no adverse events. Those short studies do not resolve long-term safety questions or negate the limitations of passive reports.

What regulatory language means for a purchase
The FDA 510(k) summary for the NuFace Facial Toning Device, filing K072260 dated November 7, 2007, describes its intended use as facial stimulation for over-the-counter cosmetic use. It describes low-level electrical impulses delivered through two probes and says conductive derma gel is required. This is a model-specific, historical filing—not proof of dramatic cosmetic effectiveness, and not a regulatory description that can be assumed to cover every brand or newer model.
A 510(k) substantial-equivalence determination is distinct from evidence that a device produces large or lasting cosmetic results. Check the exact device’s current instructions and regulatory information rather than relying on a filing for a different model.

How to decide whether to buy
- Identify the exact model. Look for its stated intended use and model-specific regulatory record; do not assume another device shares the NuFace filing’s description.
- Look for relevant clinical evidence. Check the study population, outcomes, and follow-up length. Short studies cannot establish long-term results.
- Read the safety instructions first. Follow the model’s schedule and warnings. The manufacturer-hosted article reports that dermatologists caution against overuse, but instructions and cautions may differ by product.
- Check gel requirements and recurring costs. The cited NuFace filing requires conductive derma gel. Confirm whether the model you are considering requires gel and which products its instructions permit.
- Consider your health situation. Kadam and Lipner advise people with cardiac conditions or implanted electrical devices to consult a physician before use. The NuFace-hosted article also discusses epilepsy, pregnancy, and implanted devices as circumstances for avoidance or clinician guidance; these are not a universal contraindication list, so check the device’s own warnings and ask a clinician about your circumstances.
- Set a realistic value threshold. If you would only consider the purchase worthwhile for dramatic, proven, lasting changes, the available evidence does not establish that outcome. Mild improvement or maintenance may be a more realistic expectation, but individual results are not guaranteed.
Bottom line for shoppers
There is not enough evidence here to name a best device or justify paying a premium on the promise of dramatic, lasting results. Buy only if the possibility of modest benefit fits your expectations, and after checking the exact model’s evidence, warnings, gel requirements, and suitability for you.
