AirPods 5 may suit you if you want open-ear earbuds with active noise cancellation and use Apple devices. Whether they are comfortable, stay secure, sound good to you, or reduce enough noise for your commute remains unverified: Apple’s published specifications and claims do not substitute for hands-on testing.
What are AirPods 5?
Apple announced AirPods 5 on September 9, 2026, as open-ear wireless earbuds. The company’s US launch prices were $129 for the USB-C case version and $149 for the version with a Wireless Charging Case; availability was scheduled to begin September 18, 2026. Those are launch prices, not confirmed current prices. Check local retailers for today’s price and availability. Apple’s announcement identifies both configurations.
Both versions use Apple’s H2 chip and include active noise cancellation (ANC), Adaptive Audio, Transparency, Conversation Awareness, Voice Isolation, and Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking. Apple also lists an optical in-ear sensor, force sensor, two beamforming microphones and an inward-facing microphone. Each earbud weighs 4.3 g; the standard USB-C case weighs 32.3 g. What do we know—and not know—about performance?
Noise cancellation
Apple says AirPods 5 remove “up to 50 percent more” external noise than AirPods 4 with ANC, attributing the improvement to a new multiport acoustic architecture and improved computational audio. This is Apple’s product-comparison claim, not an independent measurement; the cited announcement does not provide enough test methodology to predict performance in a particular commute, office or flight. The “up to” figure should not be read as a result every listener will experience. Apple’s September 9, 2026 announcement is the source of the comparison.

Sound and fit
Apple says its acoustic architecture and next-generation Adaptive EQ deliver richer, more detailed sound across a wider range of ear geometries. That is a manufacturer claim, not a listening test. The available evidence does not establish whether the open-ear shape feels comfortable or stays secure in your ears, whether sound quality will suit you, or how natural Transparency sounds.
Calls and real-world use
Voice Isolation and the listed microphone arrangement are features, not proof of call quality. No independent call test establishes how clearly your voice will come through in wind or background noise. The same is true of ANC effectiveness across different environments.

Which case version should you choose?

These figures are Apple estimates, not guaranteed runtime or independent test results. The Wireless Charging Case costs $20 more at the US launch prices, and its additional charging options and features may be more useful if you want them; the standard case is the simpler choice if USB-C meets your needs. Apple’s technical specifications list the case features and battery estimates.
Will AirPods 5 work with your devices?
Apple says full functionality requires pairing with an Apple device running the latest operating system software. If you rely on features such as Personalized Spatial Audio, Adaptive Audio or Conversation Awareness, check your device and software compatibility before buying; the specifications do not establish an equivalent experience on non-Apple devices. Apple’s announcement states the latest-software requirement.

Are AirPods 5 fit for your purpose?
- Consider them if: you want open-ear earbuds, ANC and Apple’s audio features, and the fit works for you.
- Compare alternatives before deciding if: secure fit, all-day comfort, strong noise reduction for travel, sound, or call clarity is essential. Those outcomes are not established by the published claims and specifications.
- Choose the case deliberately: the Wireless Charging Case adds Apple Watch and Qi charging, a Find My speaker and volume swipe controls; the standard case charges over USB-C.
Apple lists an IP57 dust, sweat and water resistance rating. Treat that as a stated resistance rating, not a promise against every kind of exposure or damage. Apple’s specifications list the rating.
