No single Meltdown-like flaw affects every AMD processor in the same way. AMD’s phrase “All AMD CPUs” applies to a specific PREFETCH side-channel advisory; a separate resource-contention finding lists all Zen processors. These findings involve microarchitectural information-leakage channels, but they are not simply the original Intel Meltdown vulnerability, and their scope and attacker requirements differ.

What “all AMD CPUs” means in the advisories

AMD has disclosed multiple findings involving processor behavior and information leakage. The broad headline can blur together distinct issues, so the affected-products wording in each advisory matters.

Finding Products AMD lists What the finding involves AMD’s stated response
AMD-SB-1017, CVE-2021-26318 All AMD CPUs A timing and power side channel using x86 PREFETCH instructions. AMD says the attacks discussed do not directly leak data across address-space boundaries. AMD does not recommend a new mitigation for this specific attack; it advises keeping platform software and firmware current, patching critical libraries, and following secure-coding and antivirus practices.
AMD-SB-7060 All “Zen” processors A timing side channel caused by resource contention. An attacker in the same process may trigger secret-dependent memory accesses during speculative execution and measure timing after speculation is squashed. AMD says existing Spectre-class mitigation guidance remains effective.

Those product scopes are not interchangeable: “All AMD CPUs” is the wording for the PREFETCH advisory, while the resource-contention advisory names all Zen processors. Neither statement means that every AMD model has an identical exploit path or exposure in every configuration.

How these findings relate to Meltdown

Meltdown is a specific transient-execution vulnerability. These AMD findings are described as Meltdown-like because they involve speculative or transient processor behavior and observations such as timing or power measurements that may reveal information. That similarity in attack class does not make them the same vulnerability as classic Meltdown.

Independent work broadens the technical picture without establishing a uniform flaw across every AMD product. Transient Execution of Non-Canonical Accesses reports transient-execution patterns on AMD Zen-family CPUs resembling Meltdown/MDS and describes possible transient-execution hijacking. Reviving Meltdown 3a reports that the newest AMD CPUs tested by its authors, Zen 3 and later, remained affected by Meltdown-CPL-REG, and that performance-counter-based attacks could be re-enabled despite up-to-date patches. Those are research results on the systems tested; they do not prove that every retail AMD model is equally exploitable.

Could an attacker steal passwords?

A side channel can potentially expose sensitive information through indirect measurements rather than by simply reading another program’s memory. AMD’s resource-contention advisory describes a same-process scenario involving secret-dependent accesses. For the PREFETCH issue, AMD specifically says the attacks do not directly leak data across address-space boundaries. The available findings therefore do not support a blanket claim that an attacker can remotely steal passwords from any AMD CPU; the risk depends on the particular technique, access conditions, software and system configuration.

Do Ryzen or EPYC owners need a BIOS update?

Apply current updates, but do not assume that one BIOS update is a universal fix for every side channel. AMD says existing Spectre-class mitigations remain effective for the resource-contention report, and it does not recommend a new mitigation for the specific PREFETCH attack. The practical advice is to keep the operating system, platform software and firmware current, and to patch critical libraries.

  1. Identify the exact processor model and the motherboard or system vendor. Check that vendor’s support page for BIOS/UEFI and platform-firmware updates for your product.
  2. Install relevant updates provided for your system, following the manufacturer’s instructions. A firmware update should not be treated as proof that every side-channel technique has been eliminated.
  3. Keep the operating system and critical software libraries patched, and use normal malware-protection and secure-coding practices.

AMD’s advisories do not establish that every system needs a distinct BIOS update for these findings. Whether an update is available, and what it changes, depends on the system vendor and the specific product.

A separate AMD microcode issue is not a Meltdown-like side channel

AMD-SB-7033 describes a different vulnerability, CVE-2024-36347: improper signature verification could let a local attacker with system-administrator privilege load malicious CPU microcode. AMD assigned it CVSS 6.4 (Medium) and said it had received no reports of exploitation when the advisory was written. Because this issue concerns privileged local access and microcode verification—not the timing or power side channels above—it should not be folded into the “all AMD CPUs” Meltdown-like claim.

What to take away by system type

  • Consumer Ryzen: AMD-SB-7060 explicitly covers all Zen processors and describes a same-process timing side channel; check your system vendor’s firmware guidance and keep software mitigations current.
  • EPYC or another Zen-based system: The “all Zen” wording makes the resource-contention advisory relevant to Zen-based products, but it does not establish that each system has an identical exploitability profile. Use the OEM or motherboard vendor’s update guidance.
  • Other AMD CPUs: AMD-SB-1017’s affected-products section says “All AMD CPUs” for the PREFETCH finding. AMD’s stated qualification—that this attack does not directly leak across address-space boundaries—still applies.
  • Security assessment: Separate AMD’s product-scope statements from academic demonstrations on particular tested CPUs; neither should be inflated into a claim that all products are equally exposed.
