Probably not if your AirPods Pro 2 still fit comfortably, hold enough charge, and give you the noise cancellation you need. AirPods Pro 3 is the current successor, but its value for an existing owner depends on whether its advertised noise-cancellation improvement, redesigned fit, workout heart-rate sensing, or longer listening time would solve a problem for you.
What changed from AirPods Pro 2 to AirPods Pro 3?
Apple’s current product page presents AirPods Pro 3 as the successor and lists the Pro 2 on its comparison page. The differences most likely to matter to an owner are noise cancellation, fit, workout tracking, and listening time with ANC enabled.
| Area | AirPods Pro 3 | What that means for a Pro 2 owner |
|---|---|---|
| Active Noise Cancellation | Apple says Pro 3 offers “Up to 2x more” ANC than AirPods Pro 2. This is Apple’s product claim, not an independent measurement. Apple product page | Consider upgrading if your current noise cancellation is a real shortcoming; the claim does not establish how noticeable the change will be for you. |
| Fit | Apple describes Pro 3 as having a redesigned fit intended to be more secure. Apple product page | Potentially relevant if Pro 2 earbuds are uncomfortable or insecure, though individual fit varies. |
| Workout heart-rate sensing | Apple says Pro 3 can track heart rate and calories burned during workouts. Apple product page | A specific reason to consider Pro 3 if you want this workout data from your earbuds. |
| Listening time with ANC | Up to 8 hours with ANC enabled, according to Apple’s technical specifications. This is a manufacturer maximum, not guaranteed real-world runtime. Apple technical specifications | Useful if your current listening time is not enough; compare your own usage rather than assuming the maximum. |
| Hearing and translation features | Apple lists Hearing Test, Hearing Aid, Hearing Protection, and Live Translation. Some features depend on region, language, device, or software requirements. Apple product page | Check Apple’s current availability and compatibility details for your location and devices before buying for one of these features. |
| US list price | $249 on Apple’s US product page, checked October 7, 2026. Price and availability can change. Apple product page | This is not the cost to upgrade: a current Pro 2 street price was not established, and local pricing may differ. |
Should you keep AirPods Pro 2?
Keep using Pro 2 if they remain comfortable and reliable, their battery lasts long enough for your routine, and their ANC and features meet your needs. Replacing a working pair just because a successor exists does not automatically deliver meaningful value.

Apple’s published specifications describe what Pro 3 offers, but they do not show how much better it will feel to a particular listener. In particular, “Up to 2x more” is Apple’s comparison claim, not evidence that every Pro 2 owner will hear twice the practical benefit.

When does upgrading to Pro 3 make sense?
- You want stronger noise cancellation: Pro 2’s ANC is not enough for the environments where you listen, and you want to try Apple’s claimed improvement.
- Your fit is a problem: You want to consider the redesigned fit, especially if your current earbuds feel insecure. Fit is personal, so the design change is not a guarantee of greater comfort.
- You want workout heart-rate data: Pro 3 adds heart-rate and calorie tracking during workouts, according to Apple.
- You need more ANC listening time: Apple specifies up to 8 hours with ANC enabled, which may suit a longer listening stretch if your real-world Pro 2 runtime falls short.
- A listed hearing or translation feature matters to you: First confirm that it works in your region with your language, device, and software setup.
How to judge the price before upgrading
Apple lists AirPods Pro 3 at $249 in the United States. That figure is a US list price, not a universal price or a measure of the upgrade premium. The available pricing information does not establish a comparable current Pro 2 retail price.
