AirPods 4 are worth considering if you want open-fit earbuds and use Apple devices. Choose the standard version if you do not need noise cancellation or wireless case charging; choose AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) if you value its extra noise-control modes and more capable case. Neither version has silicone eartips, so fit is personal, and the open design cannot isolate sound as well as sealed earbuds. Compare current prices and alternatives in your region before buying.
What changes between AirPods 4 and AirPods 4 with ANC?
The earbuds share an open-fit design, but the ANC configuration adds noise-control features and upgrades the charging case. The main decision is whether those additions are worth the current price difference to you.

When the standard version makes sense
Pick standard AirPods 4 if you want the open design and Apple-device integration but do not expect to use ANC, Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, or wireless charging. You still get USB-C charging and Apple’s stated case-inclusive maximum of up to 30 hours.
When the ANC version makes sense
Pay more for the ANC configuration only if its noise-control modes or case features matter to your routine. ANC can reduce some surrounding noise, but it does not give an open-fit earbud the passive seal of silicone-tipped earbuds. If your priority is strong isolation, compare sealed alternatives as well.

Will AirPods 4 fit your ears?
Both versions use an open design without silicone eartips. That avoids the sensation of a silicone tip sealing inside the ear canal, but it also means retention and comfort depend on your ear shape. There is no dependable way to infer from “small ears” alone whether they will stay in place; fit varies by person. What Hi-Fi’s 2026 buying guide says the fit will not suit everyone and recommends trying before buying.
If a secure seal is important for commuting, noisy environments, or exercise, consider trying them in person where possible and compare them with earbuds that include multiple eartip sizes. ANC does not change the physical fit or add a seal.

How good is the noise cancellation?
AirPods 4 with ANC adds Active Noise Cancellation, Adaptive Audio, and Conversation Awareness; the standard model has no ANC. What Hi-Fi describes the cancellation as impressive for an open design, while noting it is less comprehensive than AirPods Pro 3. Because AirPods 4 do not seal the ear, do not expect them to block sound like sealed in-ear headphones.

The ANC case also adds a speaker for Find My proximity view. That is separate from noise cancellation in the earbuds, and is useful if locating the case is a concern.

How long does the battery last?
Apple’s figures are maximum listening-time estimates, not guaranteed runtimes. Apple says the ANC tests were conducted in July and August 2024 using pre-production AirPods 4 and iPhone 16 Pro Max units with pre-release software, at 50% volume. Apple cautions that actual battery life varies with settings, environment, and use. Its standard AirPods 4 figure is also an “up to” estimate.

- AirPods 4 with ANC: up to 4 hours per charge and up to 20 hours with the case when ANC is on; up to 5 hours per charge and up to 30 hours with the case when noise control is off, according to Apple.
If you routinely listen for long stretches without putting the earbuds back in the case, the ANC-on estimate is an important trade-off to weigh.

What do the cases support?
Both cases charge over USB-C, and Apple lists the USB-C charging cable as sold separately. The ANC case additionally supports Qi-certified wireless charging and Apple Watch chargers. Do not assume those wireless-charging options apply to the standard case. If you already own a suitable cable or charger, there is no need to buy another one just for the earbuds.

Are AirPods 4 durable enough for exercise?
Apple rates both versions IP54 for dust, sweat, and water resistance under controlled laboratory testing using IEC 60529. That rating is not waterproofing: Apple says resistance can decline with normal wear, and the earbuds are intended for non-water sports and exercise, not swimming. Do not charge them while wet. Apple also advises regular cleaning because debris and earwax can affect noise-control features.

Do AirPods 4 work with Android and Windows?
They can work as Bluetooth headphones with non-Apple devices, but Apple warns that functionality may be limited. Apple lists compatible current iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Mac, Apple TV, and Vision Pro software requirements for supported features. If you primarily use Android or Windows, weigh the limited feature experience against the price rather than assuming you will get the same integration as with Apple devices.

How to decide whether they are worth the price
- Decide whether open-fit earbuds suit you. If you need a sealed fit or reliable passive isolation, compare other designs first.
- Choose the feature set. Standard AirPods 4 omit ANC and wireless case charging; the ANC model adds those features, Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, and a case speaker.
- Account for battery use. Apple’s ANC-on maximum is lower than its noise-control-off estimate and the standard model’s stated maximum.
- Check your devices and accessories. Confirm the features you need work with your devices, and whether you already have a USB-C cable or compatible wireless charger.
- Compare today’s local price and alternatives. Apple’s comparison page includes newer AirPods models, so the 2024 AirPods 4 launch lineup is not the full current choice set. The right value depends on current regional pricing and what you will actually use.
