AI toys are not risk-free, and current evidence supports caution rather than a blanket assurance of safety. They can give unreliable or inappropriate responses, collect sensitive information in a child’s home, and encourage children to treat software as a companion. Common Sense Media recommends no AI toys for children age 5 and under and caution for ages 6–12. That is the organization’s guidance, not a universal legal age limit or a finding that every AI toy is unsafe.
What counts as an AI toy—and what has been evaluated?
An AI toy is a physical toy, such as a stuffed animal, doll, robot, or voice-activated device, that uses AI to converse with a child. Many connect to the internet and use voice recognition; some listen for a wake word or otherwise collect information during play.
Common Sense Media’s Youth AI Safety Institute assessment, updated January 22, 2026, evaluated Grem, Bondu, and Miko 3. Researchers used accounts set to ages 6–13, tried structured and natural voice interactions, and reviewed privacy practices, parental controls, developmental fit, content safety, and technical performance. Its findings apply to those three tested conversational toys, not to every AI toy, traditional electronic toys without AI, or screen-based AI products.
What risks did the assessment identify?
Some answers were inappropriate for children
Common Sense Media judged 27% of outputs in its tests of the three toys inappropriate for children. The assessment describes material involving self-harm, drugs, mature topics, inappropriate boundaries, risky advice, and unsafe roleplay. This is a result from those tests—not an estimate of the share of unsafe answers from all products or in every child’s use.

Voice recognition and answers can be unreliable
The assessment also found voice-recognition problems, inappropriate activations, and inaccurate responses. A toy may misunderstand a child, respond when it was not meant to, or offer an answer that sounds confident but is wrong. These findings do not establish that every model has the same failure rate.
Parents have reported concerns, too
In a parent poll reported by Common Sense Media in its January 22, 2026 press release, 83% of surveyed parents expressed at least moderate concern about AI toys collecting personal information, 80% about cybersecurity risks, and 79% about difficulty setting limits on children’s use. These are poll results, not universal measures of parent opinion.

What ages are AI toys suitable for?
Common Sense Media recommends that children age 5 and under not use AI toys and urges caution for ages 6–12. The organization’s reasoning is developmental: young children may have difficulty distinguishing an AI system from a person while forming ideas about trust and relationships. It also raises concerns about companion-style designs and the possibility that a child could rely on a toy in place of human interaction. These are Common Sense Media recommendations, not a pediatric consensus or a statutory age rule.

How to check privacy and security before buying or setting one up
Packaging and an age label do not answer the important data questions. Use this checklist to review the toy and its companion app, if it has one:
- Sensors and listening: Does it have a microphone, camera, or other sensor? What triggers recording, and can a child or parent tell when it is listening or recording?
- Information collected: Does it collect voice recordings, transcripts, account details, location, or behavioral data during play?
- Storage and sharing: Where is information stored, how long is it retained, who can access it, and with whom is it shared?
- Access and deletion: Can a parent review and delete recordings or other child data? Are controls available both during setup and later use?
- Disable options: Can you switch off listening or connectivity on the device itself? Is there a clear signal when listening mode is active?
- Security and support: Does the company explain how data is protected in transit and storage? Check for credible complaints, known security issues, recalls, and information about updates.
The FTC advises parents in the United States to investigate the product and company, look for complaints and recalls, inspect microphones, cameras, and parental controls, and understand how information is collected, stored, shared, accessed, and deleted. UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) guidance for connected toys highlights risks including passive listening, unclear data practices, and information shared across a device network. It recommends clear information at purchase and setup, child-appropriate defaults, and making data collection visible.

The ICO’s connected-toy design guidance describes safeguards such as encryption in transfer, measures against unauthorized access or microphone takeover, visible indicators for recording or collection, a clear signal when listening mode is active, and an easy way to switch listening or collection off. The ICO page says this guidance is under review following changes made by the Data (Use and Access) Act; consult the live regulator guidance for its current status.
What do US and UK rules say?
United States
FTC consumer guidance states that when a toy collects personal information from a child under 13, the company must tell parents about its privacy practices, obtain consent, and provide a right to have the child’s personal information deleted. This is a summary of FTC consumer guidance, not a complete account of every legal issue, and it should not be applied as a description of law outside the United States.

United Kingdom
The ICO’s Children’s Code materials address connected devices likely to be accessed by children, including expectations around transparency, data handling, and security. The ICO’s connected-toy guidance is currently marked as under review following the Data (Use and Access) Act, so treat it as regulator guidance subject to change rather than a complete legal opinion.
How to decide whether a particular toy is worth using
Evaluate the whole experience rather than looking for a single “safe” label. A useful comparison between products should cover:
- Whether the stated age range matches the toy’s design and conversation style.
- When its microphone listens, whether that state is visible, and whether listening can be disabled on the device.
- What data is collected, retained, shared, and available for parental review or deletion.
- Whether controls work after initial setup and whether the manufacturer explains its security and update support.
- How the toy handles sensitive prompts and whether its responses and voice recognition are dependable enough for the intended child.
- Whether the AI feature offers a clear benefit that justifies the data and relationship trade-offs.
The 2026 assessment did not establish a universally safest model or a current comparative ranking. Grem, Bondu, and Miko 3 are examples in the assessment, not endorsements. Common Sense Media suggests traditional toys, books, and activities as alternatives or complements, particularly when the AI feature does not add clear value for a child.
