Not automatically. An AI shopping assistant is safer to use when you understand what data it collects, limit what accounts and payment methods it can access, require approval before purchases, and check every order yourself. These protections vary by service, so AI branding alone is not a reason to trust one with your budget or personal data.
What can go wrong?
Your data may travel beyond the assistant
Shopping services may collect identity and contact details, purchase and payment context, and location. Some information may be shared or sold and combined into profiles. An AI shopping feature may have different data practices from the retailer or platform that hosts it, so check the feature’s own privacy policy and terms as well as the broader service’s disclosures. The Federal Trade Commission’s online shopping guidance explains what information online shopping companies may collect and how it may be used.
Look for whether conversations, browsing activity, or purchase history are used to improve models; who receives that data; how long it is retained; and whether you can view or delete it. The FTC has warned that firms can be liable for misleading or incomplete privacy disclosures, including omissions about how customer data is used. Its position is that “There is no AI exemption from the laws on the books.” See the FTC’s January 2024 guidance on AI companies’ privacy commitments.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPurchasing access can turn a suggestion into a charge
An assistant that can only recommend products presents a different budget risk from one that can add items to a cart or place orders. Check what actions it is allowed to take and whether it requires a PIN, explicit approval, or a spending limit. Do not assume those safeguards exist: availability and settings are service-specific.

The FTC’s guidance for voice assistants recommends using a PIN or disabling voice ordering if other people in a household should not be able to make purchases. That advice is a useful model for evaluating shopping agents, but it does not establish that a particular AI service offers the same controls. See the FTC’s voice-assistant security and privacy guidance.
Recommendations and actions can be wrong
An agent can misunderstand a request, surface an unsuitable item, or present inaccurate information. UK government guidance notes that some AI models can misinterpret data and “hallucinate” nonsensical or inaccurate results. Before buying, independently verify the product identity and specifications, seller, availability, total price, shipping, and return terms. Check whether a placement is sponsored, too.
The UK government recommends monitoring AI agents and maintaining human oversight when they are used in consumer contexts. Its 2025 guidance on complying with consumer law when using AI agents says firms remain responsible for complying with consumer law when using them.

How to evaluate an assistant before connecting accounts
Use these checks to compare services. They are practical evaluation criteria, not a rating of any named product.
| What to check | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Data collection and use | What personal, browsing, location, and transaction data does it collect? Is information shared with retailers or other companies, sold, or used to improve models? |
| Retention and control | Can you view, export, delete, or limit retention of conversations and purchase history? Is the process clear? |
| Account and payment access | Which accounts can you connect? Can the assistant recommend, add to cart, or complete a purchase? What confirmation or spending controls are available? |
| Recommendation integrity | Are the seller, sponsored placements, product attributes, and full costs clearly identified so you can verify them? |
| Reliability and recourse | How can you check availability, shipping, and return terms, correct an error, or reach human support? |
| Security | Does the service support strong authentication, such as multi-factor authentication? Can you restrict permissions for linked accounts and payment methods? |
A safer setup and checkout routine
- Read the service’s privacy policy and terms. Find its explanations of collection, sharing, model-improvement use, retention, and deletion before granting access.
- Connect only what is necessary. Review each permission and linked account. Limit location access if the assistant does not need it for the task.
- Protect your account. Use a long, unique password and enable multi-factor authentication if available. The FTC recommends these measures for voice-assistant accounts; check what your shopping service supports.
- Set purchase boundaries. Look for a PIN, explicit confirmation, budget cap, or other approval step. Avoid enabling ordering on shared devices if other users should not be able to buy.
- Verify before confirming. Check the exact item, seller, total price, shipping, return policy, and whether the recommendation is sponsored. Keep order and seller records.
- Revisit permissions and retained data. Use the service’s available controls to remove unnecessary access and delete information you no longer want it to retain.
What survey results say—and what they do not
Visa’s 2025 US survey of 1,600 respondents asked about concerns using an online shopping agent. Respondents cited data security (48%), privacy (44%), purchase accuracy (44%), service reliability (40%), and lack of control (37%). In the same survey, price matching (39%), new-product discovery (38%), and saving time (38%) were reported as reasons that could motivate use.

These are self-reported concerns and preferences, not measurements of whether shopping assistants are objectively secure, accurate, or unsafe. The same survey found that 62% considered control over or deletion of agent data “very important” and 23% considered it “important.” Only 9% said they would be extremely likely, and 12% very likely, to use an agent if they could not control its data use. These findings describe the survey’s US respondents and scenario; they do not establish how any particular service handles data. See Visa’s 2025 report on consumer trust in agentic commerce.

Controls and terms can change, and no single set of settings applies across services.
