Yes. Adders are venomous, and a suspected bite needs urgent professional attention: call 999 or go to A&E for a person, and contact a vet urgently for a dog or cat. Keep the person or pet calm and still, and do not approach or try to catch the snake.
How dangerous are adders in the UK?
The adder is the only venomous snake found in the wild in the UK. The NHS describes it as grey or reddish-brown, with a dark zigzag stripe along its back. Do not approach a snake to identify or photograph it; a distant photo is only an option if it can be taken safely.
As the NHS explains, “The adder is the only venomous snake, but you should get all snake bites checked as soon as possible.” A bite may be serious even before symptoms are obvious.

What to do if a dog or cat may have been bitten
Contact a veterinary practice urgently and arrange an examination, even if the animal seems well. Keep it quiet and calm, limit movement, and leave the bite alone. Do not apply a bandage or tourniquet or try home treatment. For a dog, call the vet to say you are coming; if practical, carry the dog or bring the car to it rather than making it walk.

PDSA notes that adders are often found in long grass, woodland, moorland and coastal places such as sand dunes or coastal paths. Its guidance describes adders as active from February to October, with dog bites especially common from June to August. These are seasonal observations, not a guarantee that bites cannot happen at other times.
Adder bites in dogs are often on the face, neck or lower leg, according to PDSA. The RSPCA also warns that bites can be extremely dangerous to pets, particularly when they are bitten on the face; possible signs include swelling, bleeding or fever.

How to reduce the risk
- Leave snakes alone, and keep children and pets away.
- In known adder areas, keep dogs on paths and on a lead; a lead can help keep a dog close but is not bite protection.
- If a bite is suspected, prioritise emergency services for a person or urgent veterinary care for a pet over identifying the snake.
For general pet guidance, see the RSPCA’s advice on living with reptiles. For suspected pet exposure, Animal PoisonLine also advises contacting its service and a veterinary surgeon promptly, even if the pet appears well: Animal PoisonLine’s adder-bite guidance.
