At Arduino Day in April 2016, Arduino announced that its MKR1000 development board was shipping, alongside several distinct online initiatives: Project Hub for sharing projects, Arduino IoT for guidance, and Arduino Create, a browser-based coding environment then in private beta. The board’s launch appeal was built-in Wi-Fi and features aimed at low-power Internet of Things (IoT) prototypes—not a claim that every online service was ready for general use.
What Arduino announced in April 2016
Make reported on April 2, 2016 that the MKR1000 was shipping after its earlier introduction. The board was the physical product in a broader Arduino Day announcement; Project Hub, Arduino IoT, and Create were separate community and software initiatives. The launch report is Alasdair Allan’s Make coverage.
What the MKR1000 brought to IoT prototyping
Launch coverage described the MKR1000 as based on the Atmel ATSAMW25, a 32-bit ARM Cortex-M0+ chip, and highlighted integrated Wi-Fi, a LiPo battery charging circuit, and cryptographic support. Those features positioned it for low-power connected projects, where wireless networking and battery-powered operation are useful without adding a separate Wi-Fi shield.

What the accompanying Arduino platforms were for
| Announcement | Purpose as described in 2016 |
|---|---|
| Project Hub | A community platform for sharing projects and tutorials, powered by Hackster.io. |
| Arduino IoT | A collection of IoT tutorials and guidance, introduced alongside an IoT manifesto. |
| Arduino Create | A browser-based development environment, then in private beta, intended for writing code and uploading sketches through a browser-based tool chain. |
| Arduino Cloud | Described in the launch report as an early alpha with a limited feature set; the report also said it supported certain official Wi-Fi Shields. |
The manifesto wording reproduced in the report was “Open, Sustainable and Fair!” The phrase expresses the manifesto’s principles; the report does not attribute it to a named speaker.

The announcement establishes the MKR1000’s launch-era features and price, but not current stock or pricing. If you are considering the physical board, search for an “Arduino MKR1000 development board” and confirm that the listing is authentic, available, and priced for your region. Do not use the 2016 launch figure as a present-day buying price.
