Archie Gray captained England Under-21s in a 0-0 draw with Slovakia on 2 October 2026, a result that secured England’s place at the 2027 UEFA Under-21 EURO. The Tottenham midfielder played the full match at Stoke’s bet365 Stadium and earned his 19th cap at the level.
What happened against Slovakia?
England and Slovakia finished 0-0 on Friday 2 October at the bet365 Stadium in Stoke. Gray was in the starting XI and captained Lee Carsley’s side. England’s match report described chances for both teams, but neither found a goal. The FA’s match report records the lineup and result.
Gray completed all 90 minutes. Tottenham reported that the appearance took his England Under-21 total to 19 caps. That total counts his appearances for the team; it is separate from his statistics in the current qualifying campaign.
How did the draw secure England’s place at Euro 2027?
The point against Slovakia confirmed England’s qualification for the 2027 UEFA Under-21 EURO, scheduled to be held in Albania and Serbia next summer. England had already secured first place in its qualifying group, regardless of the result of its remaining fixture. Tottenham’s report on the qualification says the draw confirmed England’s tournament place.

What comes next for England?
At the time of the reports published on 3 October, England’s final group match was still to come: an away qualifier against the Republic of Ireland in Cork on Tuesday 6 October. The fixture was the next step in the group schedule, not a match that had already been played. England’s qualification and top spot were already settled before it.
How does Gray’s England captaincy relate to his Spurs record?
Gray’s England Under-21 captaincy against Slovakia is distinct from a club milestone he reached earlier in 2026. Tottenham reported that on 22 August he became its youngest captain in a competitive fixture, aged 20 years and 163 days. That surpassed Steve Perryman’s previous record, set at 20 years and 260 days. The Spurs record concerns his age when captaining the club in a competitive match; it does not establish that he holds a permanent England Under-21 captaincy.

How to read Gray’s qualifying statistics
UEFA’s player profile showed five appearances, 462 minutes, one goal and no assists for Gray in the 2027 qualifying campaign when reviewed on 3 October 2026. Those figures describe that campaign and can change as matches are played; they are not his total England Under-21 caps. UEFA’s profile for Gray lists the competition statistics.
