At 17, Indian recurve archer Kumkum Anil Mohod made her Asian Games debut at Aichi-Nagoya 2026 and won the women’s individual recurve title. A Hindustan Times profile by Rutvick Mehta traces the gold to years of regular practice, discipline and a determination her coach, Prafull Dange, described as bhook—hunger.
How Mohod won the individual recurve final
Mehta’s Hindustan Times account says Mohod reached the final after defeating South Korea’s Kang Chaeyoung 6–4 in the quarter-final and China’s Zhu Jingyi 6–2 in the semi-final. Against Oh Yejin of South Korea, Mohod was 5–3 down before winning the fifth set with a perfect 30 and forcing a shoot-off.
According to the feature, Oh scored an 8 in the shoot-off and Mohod hit the X, the innermost scoring zone of the target, to take gold. The World Archery event page provides event and schedule information, but the individual scorecards were not available in the surfaced material; the match sequence and scores here are therefore attributed to Mehta’s report.
What ‘bhook’ meant to her coach
Dange connected Mohod’s determination to keep competing with the hunger she carried into the final. Mehta reports that after the individual final, Dange recalled a conversation with his archer:

“When I spoke to her on Friday evening, she told me, ‘Sir, gold and Olympic quota went away. Tomorrow anyhow I have to win gold’,” Prafull Dange, her coach, said. “Wohi bhook kaam kar gayi (That hunger did the work).”
The phrase captures the profile’s central idea: ambition mattered, but it was paired with regular training and focus rather than treated as a substitute for preparation.

From a wooden bow to the Asian Games
Mehta reports that Mohod first picked up a wooden bow at Dange’s academy in 2021 and began shooting recurve in 2023. In 2024, Dange told her parents she had the talent to achieve big things if she remained regular and disciplined.
The profile also says that after returning home from a World Cup gold in Shanghai in May, Mohod attended training that afternoon. These are details reported by the feature, not independently verified training records.

Visualization and the shoot-off
Before the Games, Mohod said she had imagined facing a shoot-off and hitting the X: “Before coming here, I used to visualise that if I face a shoot-off, I will hit X,” she told Mehta. The final’s sudden-death ending echoed that scenario. Her account is a personal detail from the profile, not a general guarantee that visualization produces a particular sporting result.
What the gold means for LA28
World Archery’s 23 September 2026 preview said the Asian Games offered eight LA28 quota places: two each in the men’s and women’s recurve individual events, plus one men’s and one women’s place through the recurve mixed-team events and the same number through the compound mixed-team events. That is the quota structure, not a statement that every event winner automatically qualifies.

Mehta’s report says Mohod’s individual win secured India an Olympic quota place. That reported outcome should be distinguished from the broader allocation rules described by World Archery.

India’s reported archery campaign
Hindustan Times described India’s campaign as nine archery medals, including a best-ever five in recurve, and called Mohod the country’s only individual archery champion at the Games. The official event material available for this account did not establish the full medal tally independently, so those figures remain attributed to the feature.
