Arabian Sea humpback whales may represent a fourth humpback whale subspecies. A peer-reviewed study published in Frontiers in Marine Science on 10 August 2026 found genetic differentiation between whales sampled in Oman and the three currently recognized subspecies. Combined with the population’s resident behavior and other evidence of reproductive and behavioral isolation, the findings support the proposal to recognize the whales as Megaptera novaeangliae indica. Formal recognition has not been established: the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) says that decision rests with the Society for Marine Mammalogy’s Taxonomy Committee.
What the 2026 study found
A. Rita Amaral and coauthors compared Arabian Sea humpback whale samples from Oman with the three recognized subspecies: North Atlantic Megaptera novaeangliae novaeangliae, Southern Hemisphere M. n. australis, and North Pacific M. n. kuzira. Their mitochondrial DNA analyses found genetic differentiation between the Arabian Sea whales and those groups.
The study reports pairwise mitochondrial differentiation values of FST 0.1213–0.2441 and φST 0.0831–0.6470. The authors interpret those results, together with evidence of behavioral and reproductive isolation, as support for a fourth subspecies. The values measure genetic differentiation; they do not, on their own, constitute a taxonomic ruling. Read the 2026 study in Frontiers in Marine Science.

WCS reports that the study analyzed mitochondrial DNA from 2,285 humpback whales sampled across the relevant global range. That is the organization’s account of the study’s overall sample scale; the detailed differentiation results are reported in the paper. WCS’s 28 September 2026 summary also quotes lead author Rita Amaral saying the results support recognition of a distinct subspecies.

Why researchers propose a distinct subspecies
Genetic and evolutionary separation
The 2026 paper estimates that divergence among the groups it compared spans roughly 43,000 to 113,000 years, depending on the groups and analysis. These are evolutionary estimates, not directly observed dates. An earlier study used mitochondrial DNA and nuclear microsatellite data from 67 Arabian Sea tissue samples and estimated isolation at about 70,000 years. The estimates come from different analyses and should not be read as one exact date. The 2014 population-genetics study in PLOS One also found strong differentiation and no evidence of current migrants in the comparisons it made.
A resident population with distinct ecology
Unlike humpback populations known for long seasonal migrations between high-latitude feeding grounds and lower-latitude breeding areas, Arabian Sea whales are described as resident in tropical and subtropical waters. They feed and reproduce in the region, follow a Northern Hemisphere breeding cycle, and have a distinct song. These ecological and behavioral characteristics complement the genetic evidence; they are not by themselves a formal taxonomic decision. What the proposed name means—and what it does not
The proposed name is Megaptera novaeangliae indica. It refers to the historic name Megaptera indica, attached to a nineteenth-century type specimen collected near Basra, Iraq. The 2026 paper’s morphological and genetic analyses identified that specimen as a humpback whale closely related to contemporary Arabian Sea humpback whales.

Conservation status is separate from taxonomy
The cited IUCN Red List assessment classifies the Arabian Sea humpback whale subpopulation as Endangered; that assessment was published in 2008, not newly updated in 2026. The new genetic findings do not change that assessment. The 2026 paper says abundance remains low and presents no evidence of an increase over the past two decades, but it does not provide a new formal abundance estimate. See the IUCN Red List assessment.
Historical whaling and present-day pressures are central to the conservation concern. The IUCN SSC Cetacean Specialist Group reports that illegal Soviet whaling killed at least 242 humpback whales off Oman, Pakistan, and India in the 1960s, citing Mikhalev (1997). It also identifies entanglement in fishing gear, ship strikes and vessel noise, and oil and gas development as regional concerns. Those are threats to the whales and their habitat, not consequences of the proposed taxonomic classification.

What conservation work is recommended
The International Whaling Commission’s 2024 Scientific Committee recommendations call for ongoing photo-identification and genetic sampling, expanded acoustic monitoring, updated abundance and trend analysis, and assessment of fisheries and ship-strike risks in important habitat. The committee describes the Arabian Sea population as a priority candidate for a Conservation Management Plan. These are recommended monitoring and management measures, not evidence that a new population count or updated status assessment has already been completed.
