The system behind the “99%” headline is an industrial waste-treatment unit—not a portable home water purifier. Aquagga’s hydrothermal alkaline treatment (HALT) process is reported to destroy PFAS in contaminated liquid waste under high heat, pressure, and alkaline conditions. “Vaporizes” is misleading: the available accounts describe chemical destruction or conversion, followed by management of reaction products.
What is the portable system, and where was it used?
Aquagga’s PFAS Destruction Unit, nicknamed Eleanor, was deployed at an airport in Fairbanks, Alaska, to treat wastewater contaminated by aqueous film-forming firefighting foam (AFFF). GeekWire reported in October 2023 that the containerized unit measured 10 feet long by 8 feet wide and was used on a site where about 20,000 gallons of contaminated wastewater had accumulated over 40 years. GeekWire’s deployment report describes an industrial remediation application, not treatment of household tap water.
Aquatech later reported that the Fairbanks pool was reduced from 20,000 gallons of contaminated water to roughly 1,000 gallons of foam, attributing that account to the company. That is a reported volume reduction and concentration of waste; it is not a measure of how much PFAS was destroyed. Aquatech’s account also describes operating conditions of about 570°F (299°C) and 25 megapascals, with caustic soda used to create alkaline conditions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDoes the unit really vaporize PFAS?
Not in the ordinary sense of making PFAS evaporate and disappear. HALT applies heat, pressure, and alkaline chemistry to break down PFAS in a liquid waste stream. The sources describe destruction or chemical conversion, with fluoride and carbon-containing reaction products requiring management; they do not establish that the contaminants simply turn into vapor. The U.S. EPA’s SBIR technology profile identifies Aquagga’s approach as hydrothermal alkaline treatment.

- FEEL SAFE OUT THERE - Aquatabs are an excellent solution for purifying water while backpacking, camping, hiking, traveling, or in emergency survival situations. Simply add one 49mg Aquatabs tablet into .75-2 liters of water and wait 30 minutes.
- BE BETTER PREPARED - These drinking water purification tablets are small and lightweight making them easy to store in a disaster kit or bugout bag. They are individually sealed in foil strips designed to ensure longevity.
- ENJOY GREAT TASTING WATER EVERY TIME - Aquatabs-treated water has no unpleasant taste, color, or odor unlike iodine-based products. Pair Aquatabs water purifying tablets with a water filtration system to treat water from sediment heavy sources.
- TAKE ON THE WILDERNESS - Backpackers and campers who drink untreated backcountry water are at a higher risk of ingesting parasites and bacteria. When hiking outdoors, it's best to come prepared. Trust in Aquatabs for all of your safe water needs! Expiration Date: April 2027
Three distinct questions matter when evaluating a treatment claim: how much targeted PFAS remains in the treated liquid, what products were formed, and how those products or residuals are handled. A decline in measured PFAS concentration alone does not prove complete mineralization.
What does the “more than 99%” claim establish?
GeekWire attributed the statement “Testing shows that more than 99% of the PFAS are destroyed in treated water” to Aquagga CEO and co-founder Nigel Sharp. The report does not provide a full independent test protocol or enough detail to generalize that result across every PFAS compound, starting concentration, waste matrix, or operating condition. It is a company performance statement reported in 2023—not a universal guarantee.

EPA’s technology profile separately says Aquagga’s HALT process destroys more than 99.99 percent of PFAS in a range of liquid matrices. The profile describes the technology in a research-and-development context, including pilot-scale fabrication and testing and work toward commercial deployment at remediation sites. It does not provide a complete current statement of service geography, commercial capacity, or availability.

A 2026 Onterris case report describes a different, matrix-specific example: a reduction of more than 99.999% in trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) in a pharmaceutical waste stream. It reports inorganic fluoride measurements and fluorine mass-balance closure of 106%–117%. Those figures belong to that particular reported analytical validation; they are not the source of the Fairbanks unit’s 2023 “more than 99%” statement. Onterris’ case-report resources provide the company account.

Is this a treatment system for drinking water?
No. The featured unit treats concentrated PFAS-bearing liquid waste at an industrial remediation site; it is not presented as a home purifier or a device for a municipal drinking-water plant. Drinking-water treatment is a separate stage of PFAS management. EPA’s 2024 technical document discusses granular activated carbon (GAC), ion exchange (IX), and reverse osmosis or nanofiltration (RO/NF) for drinking-water treatment. These approaches can capture or separate PFAS, leaving residuals that still need management. EPA’s drinking-water treatment technical document explains those approaches.
System design matters because removing PFAS from a water supply and destroying a concentrated residual are not the same task. A 2026 commentary on PFAS system design discusses fitting interception, concentration, and destruction to the water system; it describes separation technologies as capable of achieving current drinking-water regulatory limits while identifying a complete “forever solution” as a research goal. The Nature Portfolio commentary and the Wiley commentary address those system-level considerations.

What should a homeowner take from the headline?
- The “99%” figure does not say whether your tap water contains PFAS or which compounds, if any, are present.
- It does not identify the starting concentration, analytical reporting limit, or test conditions needed to judge performance for a different water sample.
- It is not evidence that the Aquagga unit is available as a consumer product or suitable for home installation.
- For drinking-water questions, use water-quality information for your supply and evaluate treatment options designed for drinking water; do not treat this industrial waste-treatment claim as a recommendation to buy a household filter.
What remains unclear about deployment and performance?
The published accounts cited here do not establish the detailed independent test protocol behind the Fairbanks claim, a directly comparable cost or energy-use figure, or the featured unit’s commercial throughput. EPA’s profile provides technology-development context but is not a current service-area or availability listing. Anyone considering treatment for an industrial site would need current, site-specific information on feed composition, target PFAS, analytical methods, residual handling, operating capacity, and commercial terms.
