The Aqara Hub M200 is a compelling all-in-one choice if you want an Aqara Zigbee hub, Matter controller and bridge, Thread border router, infrared control, and optional wired PoE in one device. Its main trade-off is capacity and dependency: Aqara lists room for 40 Zigbee and 40 Thread devices, and devices it bridges to other ecosystems rely on the M200 staying online. This is a review of the published specifications and one independent setup report, not a firsthand test.
What the Aqara Hub M200 does
Aqara describes the M200 as a local hub with several distinct roles. It is an Aqara Zigbee hub, a Matter controller for compatible Matter devices, a Matter bridge that can expose supported Aqara devices to other ecosystems, and a Thread border router and mesh extender. Those labels are not interchangeable: a controller adds and controls Matter devices, a bridge makes supported devices from one system available to another, and a border router connects a Thread network to the rest of the home network.
Aqara lists Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, and Home Assistant as supported ecosystems. That does not establish that every device or feature works in every combination. Check compatibility for the specific product and function you plan to use.

Device capacity and how it compares
Aqara’s published capacity figures are 40 Aqara Zigbee devices plus 40 Thread devices for the M200. The same comparison lists lower capacity for the M100 and higher capacity for the M3; it also classifies the M3 as an edge hub and the M200 as a local hub.
| Hub | Listed Aqara Zigbee capacity | Listed Thread capacity | Hub category |
|---|---|---|---|
| M100 | 20 devices | 20 devices | Not stated by Aqara in the cited comparison |
| M200 | 40 devices | 40 devices | Local hub |
| M3 | 127 devices | 127 devices | Edge hub |
These are Aqara’s stated capacities, not an independently verified limit for every combination of devices. The M3 is the more appropriate comparison if you expect a substantially larger collection or specifically need its edge-hub role; the M200 suits a more modest installation that benefits from its combination of radios and ports.

Local operation, internet outages, and hub failure
Aqara says Automation 2.0 uses WHEN-IF-THEN logic and that automations previously triggered between the cloud and hubs transition to local operation. Some Aqara automations can therefore continue during an internet outage, but Aqara notes that functions such as cloud push notifications still require an internet connection.
A hub failure is different from an internet outage. In its reported setup, Residential Tech Today found that when the M200 went down, bridged Aqara devices stopped sending updates to and lost control from the other linked ecosystems. Local automation claims should not be read as a promise that bridging continues when the hub itself is unavailable.
Infrared control and air conditioning
The M200 has a 360-degree infrared blaster operating at 38 kHz, according to Aqara. It can send remote-control commands and detect use of an existing IR remote. Aqara’s AC mode can represent one IR-controlled air conditioner as a thermostat-like device when paired with an Aqara Climate Sensor. Aqara recommends placing the hub near the air conditioner so the infrared signal can reach it. For multiple air conditioners, Aqara points users to Advanced Matter Bridging rather than AC mode.

Power, PoE, ports, and placement
The M200 can use USB-C power or PoE. Aqara specifies a 5V⎓2A power input and 48V⎓0.25A PoE input. The box contains a USB-A-to-USB-C cable, but not the 5V⎓2A USB power adapter, so USB-powered installation requires a separately sourced compatible adapter. With PoE, power and network connectivity can use a wired installation instead; the necessary PoE equipment is not listed among the box contents.
Aqara lists an RJ45 PoE port, USB-A, and USB-C. The hub measures 100.5 mm in diameter by 30.75 mm high (3.96 by 1.21 inches), and can sit on a surface or be mounted to a wall or ceiling with a standard 1/4-inch threaded bracket. Aqara lists Wi-Fi 6-compatible standards (IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/ax) on 2.4 and 5 GHz, Zigbee/Thread on IEEE 802.15.4, and Bluetooth. Check accessory compatibility before selecting a power supply, PoE equipment, or mounting bracket.
