The main risks for Applied Materials (NASDAQ: AMAT) and Lam Research (NASDAQ: LRCX) are cyclical semiconductor-equipment spending, exposure to export controls and geopolitics, the difficulty of delivering new process technology, and supply-chain and manufacturing execution. Applied Materials also has a company-specific compliance overhang: it paid $253 million in fiscal 2026’s second quarter under a February 11, 2026 settlement with the U.S. Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) concerning certain China customer shipments. These are disclosed risk exposures, not predictions that either company will suffer a loss or that one stock will outperform the other.
The risk profile in one view
Applied Materials and Lam Research sell highly specialized wafer-fabrication equipment and related services to chip manufacturers. Their customers make multiyear capacity and technology decisions, but the orders can still move sharply from one period to the next. A useful comparison therefore starts with business mechanics rather than a simple “safer stock” ranking.
- Demand risk: chip demand, factory utilization, financing conditions and the timing of new-fab projects can change equipment orders, services revenue, margins, cash flow, earnings, backlog and inventory.
- Policy and geographic risk: export licenses, sanctions, tariffs, trade disputes and geopolitical decisions can block sales or service, raise costs or give an advantage to competitors that face different restrictions.
- Technology and execution risk: each company must commercialize tools for changing device architectures, materials and process steps while helping customers adopt them successfully.
- Supply-chain and cost risk: shortages, manufacturing constraints, shipping interruptions, inflation and higher procurement costs can delay deliveries or reduce profitability.
- Company-specific compliance risk: Applied Materials’ BIS settlement creates additional monitoring and potential-penalty exposure that is distinct from the broad industry cycle.
Both companies report these matters as risks that could produce adverse outcomes. Their filings do not establish the probability, timing or dollar impact of any particular outcome.

How semiconductor-equipment cyclicality affects investors
Orders follow several linked decisions
Equipment demand is derived from semiconductor manufacturers’ expected need for capacity and process capability. A customer may delay an order when end-market demand weakens, utilization falls, financing becomes harder to obtain, or a technology transition takes longer than planned. Conversely, a capacity shortfall or an urgent process change can accelerate purchases. Because a small number of large customers can control substantial spending, their timing decisions can make quarterly results uneven even when long-term chip demand is growing.

Applied Materials describes the industries it serves, including the global semiconductor industry, as historically cyclical and subject to volatility in customer demand. Its stated drivers include technology advances, capacity relative to chip demand, end-user demand, fab-investment timing, customer utilization, production volume, access to capital, purchasing patterns, and macroeconomic and political conditions.
AI investment is a driver, not a guarantee of a smooth cycle
Applied Materials identifies artificial-intelligence investment as a significant demand driver but says the timing and amount of that investment are difficult to forecast. AI-related construction, memory demand, advanced packaging and logic transitions can support equipment spending, yet individual customers may advance, resize or defer projects. Investors should not translate a strong AI narrative directly into a fixed equipment-revenue trajectory.
What a slowdown can look like in the accounts
A spending pause can first appear as delayed purchase orders or a shift in product mix. It can then affect factory loading, backlog conversion, inventory levels, gross margin, operating leverage and cash generation. Service activity may be more resilient than new-tool sales in some periods, but the filings do not provide a guarantee that services would offset a broad capital-spending decline.

Geographic exposure, China and export controls
International revenue makes policy changes financially relevant
Applied Materials reported that approximately 89% of its fiscal 2025 net revenue came from customers in regions outside the United States. That figure is the company’s FY2025 measure of revenue to customers outside the U.S.; it is not a universal measure of manufacturing location, customer nationality or exposure in another fiscal period.

Both companies describe a global operating environment in which export regulations, sanctions, licensing decisions, tariffs and trade disputes can restrict products or services. A rule can affect a sale directly, prevent field support, require a license, alter a product’s eligible configuration or raise the cost and complexity of sourcing and shipping. Restrictions can also encourage local or otherwise unrestricted competitors to develop substitute equipment.
Why China exposure is more than a revenue percentage
A geographic percentage alone cannot show the full risk. A company may have exposure through installed equipment, spare parts, software updates, service personnel, suppliers, logistics routes and joint customer projects. Policy changes can therefore affect both future orders and the economics of supporting equipment already in the field. The companies also warn that political or national-security developments can change the rules quickly, making historical geographic mix an imperfect guide to future access.

What the February 11, 2026 BIS settlement says
In its Form 10-Q for the quarter ended April 26, 2026, Applied Materials disclosed that it entered a settlement agreement with BIS on February 11, 2026. The agreement resolved an inquiry relating to certain China customer shipments and export-control compliance.

- It agreed to conduct internal audits and maintain export-compliance training and reporting mechanisms.
- The filing states that failure to comply with the settlement terms could result in significant penalties, including loss of suspension of a denial order.
The payment is a reported historical cash outflow, not an estimate of future losses. The continuing risk concerns compliance execution: whether controls, training, audits and reporting operate as required and whether regulators take further action if they do not. Investors should distinguish this disclosed obligation from speculation about additional penalties, which the filing does not quantify.

Lam Research’s company-specific execution risks
Commercializing products while customers change process technology
Lam Research identifies uncertainty around semiconductor and wafer-fabrication-equipment spending, economic conditions, customer and competitor investment, and changes in customer or product mix. It also highlights the need to realize value from products and technology and to commercialize new products successfully. A tool can be technically promising yet arrive late, fail to meet a customer’s yield or cost targets, or lose a design opportunity to an alternative process.
Customer technology transitions, capacity expansions and fab-construction projects may occur on different schedules than expected or may prove less successful than planned. That timing risk can postpone tool acceptance and revenue even when a project remains strategically important.
Balancing investment and efficiency
Lam’s disclosures include the challenge of managing operating expenses while continuing research and development and customer support. They also identify the risk that expected operating, manufacturing, procurement and scale efficiencies may not be achieved. Cutting investment too aggressively could weaken future product development; carrying the cost base through a downturn could pressure margins if demand falls.
Supply chain, manufacturing capacity and inflation
Equipment makers depend on complex networks of specialized components, precision manufacturing, logistics and service infrastructure. Applied Materials discusses supply-chain, shipping and sourcing risks. Lam Research specifically identifies supply-chain disruption and manufacturing constraints. Either company can face a mismatch in which customer demand is present but a constrained input, factory bottleneck or transport interruption prevents shipment.

Tariffs, inflation and higher supplier prices can increase the cost of building and delivering tools. Passing those costs to customers may be difficult when customers are delaying projects or negotiating aggressively. Building capacity ahead of demand can leave underused facilities; waiting too long can create backlogs and damage customer relationships. These are operating trade-offs rather than risks that can be inferred from a single quarter’s margin.
Applied Materials and Lam Research compared
The companies disclose many of the same industry exposures, but the evidence periods and metric definitions are not identical. Applied Materials’ cited geographic figure is for fiscal 2025, while its compliance disclosure is for the quarter ended April 26, 2026. Lam Research’s annual report covers fiscal 2026 and points to its Form 10-K for the year ended June 28, 2026.

What could make fab-equipment spending slow down?
- End-market demand weakens: chipmakers reduce utilization plans or reassess expected demand for devices.
- Financing or macro conditions deteriorate: customers delay projects to preserve cash or wait for clearer economic conditions.
- Capacity arrives too early: existing fabs have adequate output, reducing the urgency for new tools.
- A technology transition slips: a new architecture, materials change or process qualification takes longer than planned.
- Trade rules narrow the addressable market: licenses, sanctions or tariffs prevent a sale or make service uneconomic.
- Construction or customer execution falters: a fab expansion is postponed, resized or less successful than expected.
These triggers can overlap. For example, a policy change may delay a project, reduce factory utilization and force a customer to alter its product mix at the same time.

Align the reporting periods first
Start by matching fiscal years and quarters. Applied Materials’ fiscal year ended October 26, 2025, and its cited compliance update covers the quarter ended April 26, 2026. Lam’s annual report references the year ended June 28, 2026. A percentage, margin or order figure from one period should not be presented as directly comparable with a different period from the other company.

Separate exposure from probability
A filing’s risk factor describes what could happen, not how likely it is. Build a comparison that lists the exposure, the mechanism of harm, the evidence period and any mitigation disclosed by the company. Do not assign a probability or expected dollar loss unless a source provides one.
Track leading indicators without treating them as proof
- Customer capital-expenditure plans and fab-construction schedules.
- Utilization and inventory commentary from major chip segments.
- Backlog conversion, cancellation or rescheduling language.
- Service demand and installed-base activity.
- New-product qualification, customer adoption and technology-transition timing.
- Export-license developments, tariff changes and enforcement announcements.
- Supplier lead times, manufacturing capacity and cost commentary.
These indicators can improve monitoring, but none by itself proves that a stock will rise or fall.
Questions to ask before investing
- Which portion of the company’s current demand depends on projects that customers can defer?
- Are geographic percentages measured by customer location, shipment destination or another definition?
- Could a new export rule affect tools, service, software, spare parts or suppliers separately?
- What evidence shows that a new product has moved from development into customer qualification and volume adoption?
- Can manufacturing capacity and suppliers support a surge without creating costly excess capacity?
- How much operating expense must remain in place to sustain R&D and customer support during a downturn?
- For Applied Materials, are the BIS settlement controls and reporting obligations being maintained as described in subsequent filings?
- For Lam Research, are customer transitions, fab expansions and expected efficiencies occurring on the schedules management describes?
Bottom line for investors
Applied Materials and Lam Research share the central risk of a cyclical, globally regulated semiconductor-equipment market. Their results can be affected by customer spending timing, technology transitions, export controls, tariffs, supply interruptions and cost pressure. Applied Materials adds a documented BIS-settlement obligation that requires ongoing compliance execution. Lam Research’s disclosures emphasize commercialization, customer-project timing and the challenge of funding innovation while delivering operating efficiencies.
The most defensible comparison is therefore category by category and period by period. The available filings support identifying exposures, but they do not support declaring one company categorically safer or forecasting a specific stock-price outcome.
