The quickest reliable AE2 storage system is a small, powered network built from an ME Drive or ME Chest, Storage Cells, ME Cable, and a terminal. Connect the storage block to power, place several 4k Storage Cells inside it, attach a terminal, and verify that an inserted item appears in the terminal’s searchable list. Keep this first network compact: a controller-less network provides eight channels, and that is enough for a basic setup while you learn how channels, buses, and priorities behave.

This guide explains what each block does, how to build the first network, when an ME Controller becomes necessary, how to connect ordinary chests, and how to prevent power or priority problems as the system grows.

What an AE2 ME storage system actually is

Applied Energistics 2 (AE2) replaces a collection of manually sorted chests with a networked storage system. The network does not store items directly in the terminal. Storage Cells hold the item data, while an ME Drive or ME Chest holds those cells and exposes their contents to the network. The terminal is the user interface: it searches the connected storage, accepts items, and lets you retrieve them.

The official getting-started guide describes Matter Energy as a “mad scientist version of a Multi-Block chest.” That description is useful because AE2 behaves like a coordinated storage cabinet rather than a single container. Every connected part has a role:

  • ME Chest: A simpler way to hold cells for a first, compact network.
  • ME Cable: Carries the network connection between storage, terminals, buses, and powered components.
  • Terminal: The searchable screen used to insert and retrieve items.
  • Energy Acceptor or another compatible powered network connection: Supplies the network with energy.
  • ME Controller: Adds channel capacity when a network outgrows the default controller-less limit.

Think of the system as three layers: cells hold data, network parts move and expose that data, and power keeps every operation running. If one layer is missing, the terminal may be present but empty, inaccessible, or offline.

What you need before building

Gather the following before placing blocks:

  • One ME Drive or ME Chest.
  • Several Storage Cells. The official guide recommends starting with 4k cells as a practical balance between capacity and the number of item types your first network can handle.
  • ME Cable for the connections between components.
  • One terminal.
  • An Energy Acceptor or another compatible way to feed power into the ME network.
  • A stable energy source already available in your base.
  • A clear, compact location where you can see the cable branches and add parts later.

ME Chest or ME Drive: which starter layout should you choose?

Both blocks expose Storage Cells to the same kind of terminal. The practical difference is how much structure you want around the cells and how easily you expect to expand.

Starter choice Best use Cells held Channel consumption Expansion approach External-inventory compatibility Power-buffer capacity
ME Chest Small, simple first network Use the number and type of Storage Cells supported by your installed version; exact count is not stated in the guide Uses network channels for its connection; the exact per-block value is not stated Replace or supplement the chest with additional storage components as the network grows Can share a network with Storage Buses, Import Buses, and Export Buses Depends on the rest of the network; the chest itself is not specified as an energy buffer
ME Drive A system intended to gain cells and connected devices over time Use the number and type of Storage Cells supported by your installed version; exact count is not stated in the guide Uses network channels for its connection; the exact per-block value is not stated Add more drives, buses, and terminals while planning channels and cable paths Can share a network with Storage Buses, Import Buses, and Export Buses Depends on the rest of the network; add Energy Cells when transfer surges require more buffer

Choose an ME Chest if you want the fewest moving parts while learning the interface. Choose an ME Drive if you already know the storage will become a central system and you want a layout that is easier to extend. The guide does not establish a universal material cost for either choice; costs vary with the AE2 and modpack version.

Build your first powered ME network

Build the first version as a short line or compact cluster. A small layout makes channel use visible and leaves fewer places for a disconnected cable to hide.

  1. Place the storage block. Put down an ME Drive or ME Chest where you want the storage wall or station to be.
  2. Insert Storage Cells. Open the storage block and place your 4k cells, or the cell type you selected for your version, into its available slots. Empty cells do not contain items yet; they provide the media that the network will use.
  3. Connect power. Attach an Energy Acceptor, or connect the storage network to another compatible powered network connection supplied by your setup. Confirm that the AE2 network receives energy before adding a long cable run.
  4. Run ME Cable. Connect the powered network and storage block with ME Cable. Keep the route short and easy to inspect.
  5. Attach a terminal. Place a terminal on the same connected network. If the terminal does not open a storage view, check that every segment is the correct cable type and that the cable is actually connected to the storage block.
  6. Test insertion. Put one ordinary item into the terminal’s input area. Search for that item in the terminal and confirm that it appears.
  7. Test retrieval. Remove the same item through the terminal. This confirms both directions of the connection rather than merely showing that the terminal has power.
  8. Label the physical area. Leave room for a controller, more cable, buses, or an Energy Cell. A compact, labeled first build is easier to expand than a cable maze hidden behind walls.

That test item is important. It proves that the terminal can see a Storage Cell through the ME network. If the terminal opens but the item never appears, the issue is usually storage-cell placement, a broken network path, or power rather than the search field itself.

How Storage Cells, Drives, and Chests divide the work

Storage Cells hold the item data

A Storage Cell is the medium that records stored items. The terminal can only search digital storage that is installed in an ME Drive or ME Chest, so a drive or chest with no cells is an empty shell from the user’s perspective. Add cells before troubleshooting the terminal’s search results.

The ME Drive is the expansion-oriented holder

An ME Drive gives a growing network a dedicated place for cells. When you add storage, keep the drive and its cable branch close to the rest of the network so channel planning remains understandable. The guide does not define a single maximum network size for a drive; practical limits come from available channels, cable layout, power, and the cells you install.

The ME Chest is the simplicity-oriented holder

An ME Chest is a convenient first step when you want to learn the terminal and cell workflow without designing a larger storage wall. It is not a replacement for the cells: it is the block that exposes those cells to the network.

Channels: when the simple network stops being simple

AE2 uses channels to organize network connections. A controller-less network supports eight channels by default. That is generally enough for one storage block, one terminal, and a few connected devices, provided the network stays compact.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Signs that you are approaching the limit

  • A newly attached device does not become part of the network even though the cable appears connected.
  • A small starter arrangement works, but additional terminals, buses, or other network components fail after you add them.
  • Your cable branches have become difficult to count or trace.

Do not solve a channel problem by randomly adding more cable. Cable creates a path; it does not remove the network’s channel limit. First identify which connected devices are consuming channels and where the branch runs.

Adding an ME Controller

When the network grows beyond the controller-less allowance, add an ME Controller and plan the controller’s faces as channel sources. Controller faces can provide more channels, allowing a larger network to distribute connections deliberately instead of forcing everything through the initial eight-channel arrangement.

Place the controller where its faces can connect cleanly to the cable branches you expect to use. Leave physical access for later rewiring. If you install a controller after a compact starter build, reconnect the network methodically and test the terminal before adding every other device at once.

Choosing cable for a full channel path

Cable type determines how many channels a branch can carry. Dense Cable is used when a full 32-channel path is required. Use it for a deliberately planned high-capacity branch, not as a substitute for understanding which devices need channels. The exact cable arrangement and supported recipes depend on your AE2 release, so verify the item behavior in the version installed in your modpack.

Connecting ordinary chests and other inventories

You do not have to empty every existing chest into Storage Cells. An ME Storage Bus lets AE2 treat an attached inventory as network storage. This is useful for bulk materials, a specialized machine buffer, or a room of existing containers that you want to search from the terminal.

Using an ME Storage Bus

  1. Place the ME Storage Bus against the inventory you want AE2 to access.
  2. Connect the bus to the powered ME network with ME Cable.
  3. Open the terminal and search for an item that is already in the attached inventory.
  4. Confirm that the terminal can retrieve the item before connecting more inventories.

The bus does not turn the chest into a Storage Cell. The inventory remains a physical container; the bus simply makes its contents available through the network.

Importing items into network storage

An Import Bus moves items from an attached inventory into network storage. Use it when a machine, farm, or input chest should feed the ME Drive or ME Chest automatically. Connect the bus to the inventory, connect its network side to ME Cable, and make sure the network has enough power and eligible storage space.

Exporting items from the network

An Export Bus moves items from network storage into an attached inventory. It is suitable for supplying a machine or keeping a destination chest stocked. As with an Import Bus, connect the bus to the target inventory and to the ME network, then verify the transfer with a small quantity before leaving it unattended.

Storage priority: deciding where items go

When multiple storage destinations can accept an item, AE2 uses priority. The official mechanics documentation states that insertion selects the highest-priority eligible storage first. When an item is removed, AE2 selects the lowest-priority storage.

Designing priorities for bulk and specialist storage

  • Give a preferred bulk destination the highest priority among eligible stores so incoming items land there before general storage.
  • Use a separate priority for a specialized inventory when you want certain materials kept together.
  • Remember that eligibility matters: a high-priority destination cannot accept an item if it is full or otherwise unavailable.
  • When retrieving, expect the lowest-priority eligible storage to be selected. Set priorities with both insertion and removal behavior in mind.

Test priority with a small, identifiable stack. Insert the item, inspect which physical inventory received it, then retrieve it and confirm the removal order. This catches an inverted priority plan before a farm or machine begins moving large volumes.

Power, buffers, and rebooting networks

AE2 networks have a finite energy buffer. The network can run normally and still fail during a sudden transfer if one operation demands more energy than the buffer can supply during that tick.

Why a large insertion can trigger a reboot

The official energy documentation warns that inserting many items at once may require more energy than the network can hold during that tick. The network can run out of power and reboot. A mass transfer from a chest, a large import, or a rapid series of terminal actions can therefore expose a weakness that a one-item test never shows.

Adding an Energy Cell

Energy Cells add buffer capacity. They help absorb normal transfer surges so the network does not depend on the energy source meeting every short-lived spike instantly. Install one when routine bulk transfers cause power-starvation reboots, and place it where the network can reach it through the same powered connection.

Power troubleshooting checklist

  • Confirm that the Energy Acceptor or compatible powered connection is attached to the same network as the storage and terminal.
  • Check that the network has cells installed; power alone cannot display stored items if no Storage Cell is present.
  • Repeat a one-item insertion and retrieval test before retrying the bulk transfer.
  • If only large transfers fail, add buffer capacity with an Energy Cell and reduce the transfer size while testing.
  • After a reboot, inspect every cable connection and let the network stabilize before reconnecting multiple buses at once.

Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.

Stage 2: add physical inventories

Connect an existing chest with an ME Storage Bus when you need its contents searchable without moving them. Add an Import Bus for an automated input and an Export Bus for an automated output. Test each bus independently so you know which connection introduced a problem.

Stage 3: plan channels before adding devices

Count the connected devices and watch the eight-channel controller-less limit. Sketch branches before placing a controller. If the design needs more capacity, install an ME Controller and route branches from its faces. Reserve Dense Cable for a path that genuinely needs the full 32-channel capacity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stage 4: add buffering for real workloads

When the system begins handling bulk imports or exports, observe whether the network reboots during bursts. Add Energy Cells before increasing transfer size again. A stable buffer is more useful than repeatedly restarting a network that is technically connected but underpowered for its workload.

Common failure modes and fixes

Symptom Likely cause Fix
The terminal opens but shows no items No Storage Cells are installed, or the cells are in a disconnected ME Drive or ME Chest Insert cells into the storage block and trace the ME Cable to the powered network
The terminal has no usable network connection Missing power, a disconnected cable segment, or an incompatible connection Reconnect the Energy Acceptor or compatible powered link, then test a short cable route
An added device does not work The controller-less network has exceeded eight channels Remove unnecessary devices, redesign branches, or add an ME Controller
Items go to an unexpected chest Another eligible storage has a higher priority Adjust priorities and test with a small stack
Items are removed from an unexpected location The lowest-priority eligible storage is being selected on removal Review removal behavior, not just insertion priority
The network reboots during a large transfer A single tick’s energy demand exceeded the finite buffer Reduce the transfer size during testing and add an Energy Cell for more buffer capacity
A recipe or interface does not match this guide AE2 or the modpack uses a different Minecraft version Follow the labels and recipes in the installed version; the cited player guide targets 1.20.4

How to verify a finished starter system

Use this acceptance checklist before hiding cables behind walls:

  • The ME Drive or ME Chest contains the intended Storage Cells.
  • An Energy Acceptor or compatible powered connection feeds the network.
  • The terminal is connected by ME Cable to the same powered network.
  • A test item appears in terminal search after insertion.
  • The test item can be retrieved through the terminal.
  • Any Storage Bus sees its attached inventory.
  • Import and Export Buses move items in the intended direction.
  • Priorities send a test item to the intended destination and remove it from the expected source.
  • The current layout remains within eight channels, or an ME Controller is installed and its branches are planned.
  • A bulk-transfer test does not cause a power-starvation reboot, or an Energy Cell has been added to handle the surge.

Version and compatibility notes

The official player guide cited for this setup targets AE2 on Minecraft 1.20.4. Repository mechanics pages are maintained documentation, but they do not guarantee that every recipe, supported Minecraft version, or interface label is identical in another release. If your modpack changes AE2, use its in-game recipe viewer and item tooltips for crafting and exact slot details. The architecture described here—cells in a drive or chest, a powered cable network, a terminal, channel planning, storage buses, priorities, and energy buffering—remains the correct way to reason about the system, while version-specific names and recipes should be checked locally.

Bottom line

Build the smallest useful network first: ME Drive or ME Chest, 4k Storage Cells, power through an Energy Acceptor or compatible connection, ME Cable, and a terminal. Prove it works with one item before adding inventories or automation. Keep the first design under eight channels, introduce an ME Controller when growth demands it, use Storage Buses and priorities to integrate existing chests, and add Energy Cells before bulk transfers can starve the network. That sequence gives you searchable storage now without making future expansion a rebuild.
