Apple’s “Switch to Safari” campaign makes a case for switching based on built-in privacy features, Apple-device convenience, and Mac-specific claims about speed and video-streaming battery life. Whether Safari is better for you depends on your devices and workflow: Apple’s figures are promotional claims, not independently verified comparisons, and Safari is not a cross-platform replacement for Chrome on Windows or Android.
What Apple says Safari does better
Apple’s campaign presents Safari as a more private, power-efficient, and capable browser than Chrome. Its case spans performance, privacy, and everyday convenience—but those claims should be considered in the context Apple gives for them.
Speed and video streaming on Mac
Apple says Safari is “up to 35% faster than Chrome when loading frequently visited sites on Mac” and offers “up to 5 hours more video streaming on your Mac compared with Chrome.” These are Apple’s claims, limited to frequently visited sites and video streaming on Mac. The current campaign page does not state the full test conditions, so the figures should not be treated as results every user will experience or as comparisons across all devices and workloads. Apple does not state a publication year for the current page.

Apple points to Intelligent Tracking Prevention, blocking third-party cookies by default, protections in Private Browsing, and a Privacy Report. The company says these features are intended to help prevent tracking and profiling; they are not a promise of anonymity or a guarantee that all tracking is stopped. Apple’s Safari Privacy Overview, dated November 2019, provides historical context for its privacy design rationale, but does not verify the current Chrome comparison or every detail of today’s implementation.

Convenience and browsing tools
The campaign also promotes syncing tabs, history, bookmarks, and passwords across Apple devices; importing bookmarks and saved passwords from Chrome; and features such as Distraction Control, Reader, passkeys, Apple Pay, extensions, and Google Workspace support. These are useful if they match your devices and habits, but their presence alone does not make Safari the better choice for every workflow.
Is Safari better or more secure than Chrome?
There is no universal winner established by Apple’s campaign. Safari may be a good fit if you use Apple devices and value its built-in privacy controls and continuity features. Chrome may remain the more practical choice if you need to use the same browser across Apple, Windows, and Android devices, or depend on a particular extension or workflow.

Apple’s security question is also distinct from its privacy pitch. The campaign describes privacy protections and browser features; it does not provide an independent security comparison showing that Safari is categorically more secure than Chrome. Choose based on the protections and compatibility you need, rather than treating a promotional comparison as a universal verdict.
Who should consider switching—and who may not
- Consider Safari if you already use a Mac, iPhone, or iPad and want browsing data and passwords to work across your Apple devices.
- Consider Safari if its built-in privacy features and tools such as Reader or Distraction Control suit how you browse.
- Keep Chrome or check your requirements first if you need one browser experience across Windows or Android as well as Apple devices, or rely on specific extensions or services.
- Do not buy Apple hardware just to switch browsers. Apple provides default-browser settings for supported Apple devices; the campaign does not say a purchase is required.
Apple’s campaign describes Safari for macOS, iOS, and iPadOS; it does not present Safari as a general browser option for Windows or Android.

The campaign explains Apple’s reasons to try Safari and gives practical switching steps. Its performance figures are Apple’s statements; the page does not supply full test conditions, a campaign launch date, or independent validation of the comparisons. Treat the numbers as claims with a Mac-specific scope, and make the browser choice that fits your devices, privacy priorities, and required tools.
