Apple had not confirmed a HomeView product or its price in information available before its reported October 13, 2026 event. Reports described two possible designs—a countertop hub and a wall-mounted model—but the claim that each would cost $299 is unverified. Apple’s documented US$299 price was for the second-generation HomePod in January 2023, a separate product.
What is Apple’s HomeView?
HomeView is the name used in pre-announcement reports about a planned Apple smart-home hub, reportedly code-named J490. The reports described a device intended to bring voice and touch controls for the home into a dedicated display. Apple had not officially confirmed the product or those details by the time of the reporting.
HomeView would enter a category Apple already serves through HomePod, HomePod mini, and Apple TV. Apple says HomePod and HomePod mini become home hubs automatically when set up, while Apple TV becomes one when added to a room in the Home app. A home hub enables remote accessory control, shared control, and automations. Apple’s home hub setup guidance explains the current options.

MacRumors, attributing its details to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, reported two HomeView forms. The differences described are about placement and physical design; Apple had not published a specification sheet confirming them.

| Wall-mounted | Display with a flat, square base, intended for wall placement | Two colors, according to the report |
A separate report described a 6-inch square display and an A18 chip. Those, too, are reported details rather than Apple-confirmed specifications. The available reporting does not establish differences in performance, sound quality, or features between the two designs.
Does HomeView really cost $299?
No HomeView price was confirmed in the cited pre-announcement coverage. Apple’s US$299 figure refers to the second-generation HomePod: Apple announced that price in January 2023 for that speaker, which can also act as a home hub. It is not a HomeView price and should not be used to infer what either reported HomeView design might cost. See Apple’s HomePod announcement.

MacRumors reported that availability was estimated for around mid-November 2026. That was an estimate attributed to Mark Gurman, not an Apple-confirmed release date. Apple’s October 13, 2026 event was still upcoming at the time covered by these reports, so the final name, launch timing, and availability could not yet be established.

Can HomeView control Matter accessories?
Apple’s existing Home system supports Matter accessories, but compatibility depends on the accessory and the hub requirements. Apple says a home hub is required to add Matter accessories to the Home app. Thread-enabled Matter devices additionally require a Thread-enabled home hub or a supported third-party border router. Apple’s Matter accessory guidance outlines these requirements.
Apple describes Matter as a standard intended to let smart-home accessories work across platforms, and Thread as a low-power, IP-based mesh networking technology. Those descriptions do not mean every Matter accessory supports every Apple Home feature. Before choosing an accessory, verify the exact model’s Apple Home compatibility, its Matter support, and whether it requires Thread. Apple’s Matter developer information and Home accessory listings provide additional compatibility context.

Does HomeView have an App Store?
Pre-announcement reporting characterized the planned hub as voice-first with touch input, a limited selection of Apple apps, and no dedicated App Store. Apple had not confirmed those details. Until official specifications are available, treat the reported app selection and lack of an App Store as unverified rather than as finalized product limits.
What can you use as an Apple home hub now?
If you need a hub before HomeView’s reported launch, Apple currently documents HomePod, HomePod mini, and Apple TV as options. HomePod and HomePod mini become hubs automatically after setup; Apple TV must be added to a room in the Home app. Apple’s support page also explains how to check hub status and manage a home: Set up your home hub.
For Matter devices, confirm the hub and network requirements for the specific accessory. In particular, Thread-enabled devices need a Thread-capable hub or supported border router; a generic Matter label alone does not settle that requirement.
