Apple’s newly announced wired video doorbell is an LG product built for Apple Home—not a doorbell manufactured by Apple. Called the LG Video Doorbell Wired, it pairs two camera views with Apple Home controls and is announced to begin shipping in December 2026. Apple’s launch announcement describes its features, but it does not establish how the doorbell performs in independent testing or how it compares with Ring.
What Apple announced
Apple introduced the Apple Home Collection on October 13, 2026, in collaboration with LG Electronics and Schneider Electric. The collection is designed for Apple Home: Apple says accessories can be set up by tapping an iPhone and controlled through the Apple Home app or Siri, without a separate app or account. The products are announced to become available starting in December 2026, with select accessories following in early 2027.
The collection includes LG indoor and outdoor cameras, the wired video doorbell, a smart deadbolt, thermostats from LG and Schneider Electric, and temperature sensors. Apple vice president of Hardware Engineering Matthew Costello said, “Apple Home Collection makes it easy to choose smart home accessories with confidence.” That is Apple’s launch messaging, not an independent assessment of the products.

Two camera views and a spotlight
Apple says the doorbell has a front camera recording at 2.5K resolution and a downward-facing camera recording at full HD resolution. The two views are intended to show both visitors and packages; the unit also includes a built-in spotlight. These are specifications announced by Apple in 2026, not independently verified test results.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Chimes and smart-home controls
Doorbell chimes can play through HomeView, HomePod, or HomePod mini. The wider Apple Home Collection is controlled through the Apple Home app and Siri, according to Apple. The announcement does not establish that every accessory requires all of these devices, or that a HomePod is required for the doorbell.
What you need for Apple Home video
Apple says its cameras work with a home hub, naming Apple HomeView, HomePod, HomePod mini, and Apple TV 4K. Camera event history uses iCloud+. Apple says eligible iCloud+ plans also add automatic video descriptions and natural-language search. Before buying, check Apple’s current iCloud+ plan eligibility and camera limits; those details can change and are not established as evergreen terms in the launch announcement.

Apple states that users with iCloud+ can store encrypted camera footage in iCloud with 10 days of event video history. This is Apple’s announced retention period, not a claim that all recorded footage is retained indefinitely or that the doorbell includes a subscription.
Privacy and recording during Wi-Fi outages
Apple says Home camera footage and personal data are end-to-end encrypted and inaccessible to Apple, LG Electronics, and Schneider Electric. It says camera footage is processed on the customer’s Apple Home hub or in Private Cloud Compute, then stored encrypted in iCloud for 10 days for iCloud+ users. These are Apple’s privacy claims; they were not independently audited in the material available for this announcement.

Is it a Ring alternative?
It may suit someone who wants a wired doorbell and already uses Apple Home, but Apple’s announcement alone cannot establish that it is better than Ring. No matching Ring price, subscription comparison, performance test, or comparative reliability figure is established here. Compare the products on the factors that determine real ownership costs and fit:
- Wiring: This is a wired doorbell. Check compatibility with your existing wiring and chime before assuming installation will be straightforward.
- Coverage: The downward-facing full HD view is specifically intended to show packages as well as visitors.
- Apple Home requirements: Apple names a compatible home hub and iCloud+ for camera history. Confirm the current hub and plan requirements for the features you want.
- History and ongoing cost: Apple announces 10 days of event history for iCloud+ users. Compare current subscription terms and camera limits against any alternative before deciding.
- Privacy: Apple describes its encryption, processing, and access protections as above; consider those stated policies alongside the other product’s published data practices.
- Price and timing: Announced starting prices are C$349.95 in Canada and £229.95 in the UK, with availability beginning in December 2026. The reviewed releases do not establish a U.S. price.
The optional Apple Home smart lock
The LG Smart Deadbolt Lock is a separate accessory, not part of the doorbell. Apple says it supports tap-to-unlock, an integrated PIN pad, a hidden backup key slot, and Ultra Wideband-based approach detection for automatic unlocking with a home key on a compatible iPhone or Apple Watch. It can detect whether a door is open, closed, or tampered with, and Apple Home lets users share guest access. Apple says core access works locally without an internet connection; the lock is Matter compatible and supports Aliro.

Apple also says users can see a visitor and unlock the door in one view or through Siri. Its Canadian announcement lists the lock at C$479.95; the UK release reviewed here does not list it as a UK product. The lock may make the collection more compelling for an Apple Home household, but it is an additional purchase and not necessary to use the doorbell.
