John Ternus opened his first major Apple event as CEO with a quiet, gracious introduction, a maroon sweater and black jeans, and a deliberately delayed reveal. Then he described rival foldables in a way that made them sound inelegant without naming a single company. The move was pointed, but it stayed focused on product design rather than personalities.
A low-key debut with a very pointed line
Apple’s “Surprise and Shine” event on September 9, 2026, was Ternus’s first major public product presentation since becoming CEO. He began by calling it “an extraordinary privilege” to represent Apple’s teams and praised their “curiosity, invention and relentless pursuit of excellence.” The Guardian described his manner as warm and unpretentious.
Near the end of the presentation, Ternus revived Apple’s famous suspense formula: “Actually, there is one more thing …” He then held up the company’s first foldable iPhone and said, “this is iPhone Duo.”

He immediately followed the criticism with Apple’s proposed answer: “a larger display that feels as natural and intuitive as iPad,” created through “thoughtful design with breakthrough engineering in a way only Apple can.”
Why the insult sounds classy instead of hostile
He criticized an outcome, not a rival
Ternus did not mention Samsung, Motorola, Google or any particular model. He described a perceived user-experience problem instead: awkward proportions, compromised scrolling and poor movie presentation. That lets listeners infer the targets while keeping the speech centered on design.
He turned the criticism into a product definition
The sequence is what makes the line effective. First comes the weakness, then the consequence for ordinary activities, followed by Apple’s desired experience. The insult is therefore also a positioning statement: Apple wants its foldable to behave like a familiar tablet when opened rather than like two conventional phones joined at a hinge.

His delivery reinforced the contrast
The reported presentation was calm and product-led, not theatrical or personal. That restraint matters. The wording is dismissive, but the speaker appears to be explaining why Apple made different engineering choices. Calling this “classy” is an editorial interpretation of the language and delivery, not a measurable product claim.

Those figures describe the hardware Apple presented; they do not by themselves establish whether the hinge, crease, battery life or screens outperform competing foldables. Independent durability and usability comparisons were not part of the reported launch information.

Price depends on the configuration
Launch coverage gave different entry points, so the iPhone Duo should not be described with one universally settled price. MobileSyrup reported an announced price of $2,999, while CNN reported a least-expensive configuration at $1,999 and higher configurations above $3,000.

The discrepancy is best understood as a difference in configuration or reporting, rather than evidence that one figure automatically replaces the others. Buyers will need Apple’s final regional and storage listings to determine the actual price available to them.
Apple is late to a category Samsung helped establish
The timing explains why Ternus’s comment landed as a challenge to an existing market rather than an introduction to a new idea. CNN described Samsung as the current leader in a foldable-phone market that remains niche but is growing.

Samsung’s U.S. mobile account answered Apple’s positioning on launch day with: “Let us know when you’re done reheating our leftovers 😉” The exchange captures the competitive reality: Apple is presenting its design as a fresh solution, while Samsung can point to years of shipping foldable hardware.

There is not enough reported evidence for a definitive winner. The useful comparison is by category rather than by slogan.

Ternus specifically criticized square screens, scrolling compromises and black bars on video. Those are Apple’s design arguments, not independent test results.
- Engineering and durability: The Duo was reported with a grade-five titanium frame and Ceramic Shield 2 on the front display. No comparative hinge-life, crease or drop-testing figures were provided.
- Price: The reported Duo figures place it at the premium end of the category, with the final amount varying by configuration. A fair Galaxy Z Fold comparison requires matching storage, region and promotion.
- Software and ecosystem: CNN reported that Ternus framed Apple’s artificial-intelligence strategy around a personal intelligent hub that combines information across Apple devices and an AI-enhanced Siri. That could matter more to existing Apple users than a single screen measurement.
- Market maturity: Samsung has several years of foldable experience and established category leadership, while Apple is making its first entry. That favors Samsung on shipping history, but it does not prove which device delivers the better experience.
Why did Apple wait so long?
The available launch statements do not provide a definitive public explanation for Apple’s delay. The timeline shows that competitors began shipping foldables years earlier, while Apple waited until 2026 to present its own interpretation. Ternus’s remarks suggest that Apple wanted to enter with a particular answer to display proportions and everyday usability, but that is a description of the product strategy, not proof of the internal reason for the timing.

The leadership change behind the launch
Apple announced on April 20, 2026, that Tim Cook would become executive chairman and John Ternus would become CEO effective September 1. The board approved the transition unanimously after a long-term succession process.
Ternus had spent more than two decades at Apple and had been senior vice president of Hardware Engineering. Cook described him as having “the mind of an engineer, the soul of an innovator, and the heart to lead with integrity and with honor.” His background helps explain why the first major message of his tenure was framed around engineering choices rather than celebrity-style rivalry.
Apple also entered the transition from a position of enormous scale. Apple’s 2026 figures said its market capitalization had grown from approximately $350 billion to $4 trillion under Cook, annual revenue had risen from $108 billion in fiscal 2011 to more than $416 billion in fiscal 2025, the active installed base had exceeded 2.5 billion devices and Services had become a business worth more than $100 billion.
What Ternus’s first launch signals
The iPhone Duo is more than a new form factor: it is the first visible product statement from Apple’s new chief executive. Ternus’s method was controlled contrast. He acknowledged a category that competitors built, identified what Apple believes feels awkward about it, and presented Apple’s device as the coherent alternative.
Whether the Duo earns that distinction will depend on hands-on questions the launch rhetoric cannot answer: hinge reliability, software behavior, battery endurance, screen quality, repairability and the value of its final configurations. But as a piece of executive communication, Ternus demonstrated how to insult the competition without sounding rattled—describe the problem, leave the rival unnamed and make the product the punchline.
