For most iPhone owners, start with Apple’s built-in keyboard. It is integrated into iOS, works without granting a separate keyboard app network access, and automatically returns for passcode fields and other secure text views. Apple also continues to add language features to it, including several changes in iOS 26.

Choose a third-party keyboard when it fixes a specific problem that Apple’s keyboard does not: glide typing, a search button, toolbar shortcuts, a particular language layout, or a personalization feature. The decision is less about declaring one keyboard universally “best” and more about weighing that feature against another app, its current privacy disclosure, and the permissions it requests.

The short answer

Use Apple’s keyboard unless you have a clear reason to switch. It is the least complicated option for system integration: you do not install another extension, you do not need to enable Full Access, and iOS uses the system keyboard in passcode inputs and secure text views.

Try Gboard if you specifically want Glide typing, broader language controls, or optional Google Search from the keyboard. Try Microsoft SwiftKey if its swipe typing, toolbar shortcuts, tap-to-type behavior, or personalization tools match the way you write. Neither choice is automatically safer or more accurate based on the available documentation; no independent speed or accuracy test establishes a winner.

What an iPhone keyboard actually is

Apple and third-party keyboards use different layers of iOS. Apple’s keyboard is part of the operating system. A third-party keyboard is an app extension that you enable for system use.

After activation, an extension can appear in ordinary text fields in apps such as Messages, Mail, Notes, and web forms. iOS does not allow custom keyboards to appear in passcode inputs or secure text views. Individual apps can also block third-party keyboards and force the system keyboard for particular fields.

That means no third-party keyboard is present everywhere. When you reach a protected field, iOS may switch back to Apple’s keyboard without asking, even if your preferred extension is selected elsewhere.

Why Apple’s keyboard is the sensible default

It needs no extra permission decision

Apple’s keyboard is already part of iOS. You do not have to install an additional app, enable an extension, or decide whether to grant Open Access (called Full Access in the user-facing setting).

It handles protected fields predictably

iOS reserves passcode inputs and secure text views for the system keyboard. A third-party extension cannot be used in those fields, so choosing Apple’s keyboard avoids a visible switch when you enter passwords, device passcodes, or other protected information.

Language support may already cover your needs

Apple’s iOS 26 release document lists several language-specific changes:

Some QuickType processing is on-device

Apple’s privacy features page says that Siri Suggestions in the QuickType keyboard are made possible by an Apple-developed neural-network language process that runs directly on your device. This is a statement about the Siri Suggestions feature. It should not be expanded into a claim that every keyboard-related process or every Apple feature is handled identically.

When a third-party keyboard is worth installing

You want glide or swipe typing

Gboard documents Glide typing, and SwiftKey’s current US App Store listing describes swipe typing. These modes let you trace across letters instead of tapping each key. Whether the gesture recognition feels better for you is personal; the available material does not provide an independent accuracy or speed ranking.

You need a keyboard-level search tool

Gboard includes an optional Google Search feature. It can be useful when you need to look up a fact, place, or link while composing a message instead of leaving the current app. Google says this feature requires Full Access and that searches are sent to Google; Google also says nothing else is shared.

You use toolbar shortcuts or extensive personalization

SwiftKey’s App Store description lists toolbar shortcuts and personalization in addition to swipe and tap-to-type input. Those tools may matter if you want frequently used functions close to the keys or prefer adjusting the keyboard’s appearance and behavior. Check the current listing because app features can change.

Apple’s layout does not support your workflow

A third-party app can be justified by a specific language, layout, or input method that Apple does not provide for your use case. First verify the latest Apple keyboard options in Settings, then compare the third-party app’s current language list and iOS compatibility requirement.

How Full Access works

The default sandbox

Apple’s Platform Security documentation, published December 19, 2024, says a custom keyboard runs in a restrictive sandbox by default. The sandbox blocks network access and APIs that could exfiltrate typing data. Apple’s developer documentation says that, without Open Access—or when Full Access is disabled—the system’s restriction means users know keystrokes go only to the app currently using the keyboard.

This describes the technical restriction on a non-networked keyboard. It is not a blanket promise about what an extension may do after you grant Full Access.

What enabling Full Access can permit

Apple says Open Access can allow network use, shared-container access, server-side processing of keystrokes and input events, and other advanced capabilities. The user must explicitly opt in. Full Access is therefore a capability grant, not proof that every keystroke is uploaded and not proof that no data is uploaded.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to check the setting

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap General, then Keyboard.
  3. Tap Keyboards and select the installed keyboard.
  4. Review Allow Full Access. Leave it off unless a feature you want genuinely requires it.

Labels can vary slightly by iOS release. If a keyboard’s own feature refuses to work, read its explanation before changing the setting.

Privacy differences you should evaluate

Do not treat “third-party” as a single privacy category

Two extensions can request the same permission and use it differently. Evaluate the specific app’s current disclosure, the feature that requires access, and whether you can keep Full Access disabled for normal typing.

Gboard’s documented Search behavior

Google’s Gboard setup documentation says its Google Search feature needs Full Access. Google says searches are sent to Google and that nothing else is shared. That statement is tied to using Search; it does not describe every possible data practice of every keyboard feature.

Apple’s developer rules are not an app audit

Apple’s App Review Guidelines require keyboard extensions to function without Full Access and limit collection to activity that improves the keyboard extension on-device. These are requirements for developers. They are not independent confirmation that a particular app follows them perfectly, so permission choices and the app’s current disclosure still matter.

How to install, switch, and remove a keyboard

Install and enable a keyboard

  1. Download the keyboard app from the App Store.
  2. Open Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards.
  3. Tap Add New Keyboard and select the app.
  4. Tap the newly added keyboard to review its settings and the Allow Full Access switch.
  5. Open a text field, then touch and hold the globe or emoji key to choose the keyboard.

Some apps display an in-app setup guide, but the iPhone Settings path controls whether the extension is available system-wide.

Switch temporarily while typing

Tap the globe key to move through enabled keyboards, or touch and hold it to select one from the list. If the globe key is not visible, tap the emoji key or the key shown at the lower-left of the keyboard.

Remove or reorder keyboards

  1. Go to Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards.
  2. Tap Edit.
  3. Use the delete control to remove an extension, or drag the handles to change the order.

Removing the keyboard from this list disables its system extension; deleting the app removes the software itself.

  1. What exact feature is missing? Name it—glide typing, Search, toolbar shortcuts, a language layout, or personalization.
  2. Does Apple already provide it? Check the iOS 26 keyboard list and the language/layout settings before adding an extension.
  3. What permission does the feature need? If it works without Full Access, leave the switch off. If it requires access, decide whether that benefit justifies the expanded capability.
  4. Will you keep maintaining it? Check the app’s current App Store compatibility, update history, privacy disclosure, and whether it still supports your iOS version.

This approach avoids installing a keyboard for a feature you will rarely use and makes the privacy trade-off explicit.

Common problems and fixes

The keyboard disappears in a password field

This is expected for passcode inputs and secure text views. iOS does not permit custom keyboards there. Use Apple’s keyboard for that field.

A third-party keyboard is missing from the globe-key list

  • Confirm it is enabled under Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards.
  • Restart the app in which you are typing if the extension was just installed.
  • Check whether that app blocks third-party keyboards.
  • Update the keyboard app and iOS if the listing shows a compatibility fix.

A feature works only after Full Access is enabled

Read the app’s explanation and identify the exact feature. Gboard’s documented Search feature is one example that requires Full Access. If you do not need that feature, turn Full Access off and continue using the keyboard’s functions that work in the restricted mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The keyboard is slower or less accurate for you

There is no independent test in the available documentation that proves one option is faster or more accurate. Try the keyboard in the apps and languages you actually use, then keep it only if the improvement is noticeable enough to justify another extension and its permissions.

Dictation or voice input asks for another permission

Voice typing can involve microphone access and may have separate controls from keyboard Full Access. Review the specific prompt and the app’s current documentation rather than assuming that microphone permission and Full Access are interchangeable.

Which users should choose which option?

Choose Apple’s keyboard if…

  • You want the simplest setup and the tightest default network boundary for a custom-keyboard decision.
  • You frequently enter passwords or other protected information and prefer not to switch extensions.
  • Apple’s QuickType behavior and your required languages are sufficient.
  • You do not need a keyboard search tool, toolbar, or specialized personalization.

Try Gboard if…

  • Glide typing or its language-selection controls are the feature you are missing.
  • You want optional Google Search while composing.
  • You understand that Search requires Full Access and that Google says searches are sent to Google.

Try SwiftKey if…

  • Swipe or tap-to-type input, toolbar shortcuts, or personalization are central to your workflow.
  • The current App Store listing confirms support for your iOS version and languages.
  • You have reviewed the developer-supplied privacy disclosure and are comfortable with the permissions and data categories it describes.

Bottom line for most iPhone owners

Keep Apple’s keyboard as your baseline. It provides the strongest out-of-the-box integration, works in the protected fields where custom keyboards cannot, and has gained additional language capabilities in iOS 26.

Install a third-party keyboard only for a defined benefit. Gboard and SwiftKey document useful alternatives, but each adds an app, an extension, and a permission decision. Start with Full Access disabled, enable it only when the feature you want requires it, and recheck the app’s current listing because features, disclosures, and compatibility can change.
