NVIDIA is better positioned in the data-center AI compute market, while Apple controls an integrated route to machine learning on its own devices. Those are different kinds of influence, not proof that either company controls all computing. The answer depends on whether “compute” means chips, complete systems, software access, networking, or cloud capacity—and on where a workload needs to run.
What does it mean to control compute?
Compute is not a single product or market. A company can shape it through processors, complete hardware systems, software frameworks that developers use, high-speed networking, or access to machines in a cloud. Those layers reinforce one another, but influence in one does not automatically mean control of the others.
It also matters where the work happens. A model running on a phone or laptop is not the same kind of compute as a large model served from a data center. A person may own a device and run work locally, or rent remote capacity from a cloud provider. Comparing companies without separating those cases can make market position sound broader than the evidence supports.

Apple: an integrated device and developer path
Apple’s developer documentation describes building and deploying machine-learning models for iPhone, iPad, Apple Vision Pro, Mac, and Apple Watch. It presents Core AI as designed for on-device models and says the Foundation Models framework provides access to Apple Foundation Models on-device and in Private Cloud Compute. The documentation also describes MLX as an open-source array framework for experimentation, training, research, and fine-tuning on Apple Silicon. Apple’s strength in this account is the device-and-software path: developers can work within tools designed for Apple platforms, and some machine-learning work can run on-device.

- Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4
- Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis
That evidence does not establish Apple’s share of AI accelerators, the size of its internal data-center fleet, or how much global compute runs on Apple hardware. It supports a description of Apple’s developer and on-device strategy, not a numerical comparison with NVIDIA’s data-center business.
NVIDIA: data-center systems, networking, and software
NVIDIA’s position extends beyond selling chips. Its company materials describe a data-center business that combines compute and networking, including demand associated with NVLink, Ethernet, and InfiniBand. The OECD’s 2025 report discusses CUDA as part of NVIDIA’s software ecosystem. Taken together, these layers help explain why the company’s influence is relevant to organizations assembling or accessing large-scale AI infrastructure.

NVIDIA’s fiscal 2026 materials also discuss the forthcoming Vera Rubin platform and name AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure as expected early deployers. Those are NVIDIA’s stated expectations, not evidence here of deployment results or availability for every customer.

NVIDIA reported $215.9 billion in total revenue and $193.7 billion in Data Center revenue for fiscal 2026. It reported total revenue growth of 65% year over year and Data Center revenue growth of 68% year over year, and identified Blackwell demand as a driver. These are company-reported financial results and explanations; they are not independent performance measurements or market-share figures.

- Military-grade components deliver rock-solid power and longer lifespan for ultimate durability. Compatibility: 348mm (13.7") length, 3.6 slots, 4.3 lbs. Confirm case clearance and slot spacing. GPU bracket included.
- Protective PCB coating helps protect against short circuits caused by moisture, dust, or debris
- 3.6-slot design with massive fin array optimized for airflow from three Axial-tech fans
- Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads
- Graphics revenue: NVIDIA reported $22.5 billion for fiscal 2026.
- Compute & Networking segment revenue: NVIDIA separately reported $193.5 billion. This segment classification is not the same as Data Center revenue, reported at $193.7 billion.
Revenue indicates the financial scale of a business, not how many chips it ships, how much compute it operates, or what share of all AI workloads it handles. The figures make NVIDIA’s commercial scale in data centers clear; they do not settle who controls compute in every sense.
Does NVIDIA have more than 80% of AI compute?
Not on the basis of the estimate sometimes cited in this discussion. The OECD’s 2025 competition report repeats an estimate that NVIDIA had over 80% market share for AI GPU chips, attributing that estimate to another source. It is a secondary-source estimate with a narrow scope: AI GPU chips. It should not be presented as an OECD measurement, as NVIDIA’s share of all AI compute, or as a comparison with Apple’s on-device processing.

Can Apple Silicon run AI models locally?
Apple’s developer materials establish that its frameworks support machine-learning development for Apple platforms and describe on-device model use, including access to Apple Foundation Models through the Foundation Models framework. MLX is described as supporting experimentation, training, research, and fine-tuning on Apple Silicon. That establishes a local development and execution path; it does not mean every model, size, or workload will run well on every Apple device.
For a specific model, check its memory requirements, the device’s configuration, and support in the software you plan to use. The cited Apple documentation does not provide a cross-vendor benchmark against NVIDIA hardware, so it cannot answer which system is faster or more efficient for a particular workload.

How should you compare Apple and NVIDIA for a real workload?
A meaningful comparison starts with a defined workload and a defined location: for example, running a supported model locally on a device versus serving it from owned or rented data-center hardware. Then compare the same useful output under comparable conditions, rather than inferring capability from brand, revenue, or peak specifications alone.
- Performance per watt: Measure the task that matters, with the same quality target and a clearly stated test setup.
- Total cost per useful output: Include hardware or cloud access, power, and the amount of work completed—not just an upfront device price.
- Memory capacity and bandwidth: Check whether the model and its working data fit, and whether memory performance meets the workload’s needs.
- Software compatibility: Confirm that the framework, model format, and features required by the application are supported.
- Deployment scale and networking: For multi-user or large-scale service, account for how systems connect and whether the infrastructure can grow with demand.
- Ownership and location: Distinguish local hardware you control from cloud capacity you rent; access to a platform is not the same as owning its infrastructure.
The cited materials do not provide a joint Apple-versus-NVIDIA benchmark across these measures. A defensible choice therefore requires workload-specific compatibility and pricing checks, rather than a universal winner claim.
So, who controls AI compute?
If the question is about the data-center infrastructure and ecosystem used to serve large-scale AI workloads, NVIDIA is the more directly relevant company in the evidence discussed here: its fiscal 2026 results show substantial Data Center revenue, and its business spans compute and networking. If the question is about machine learning integrated into personal devices and the tools developers use for Apple platforms, Apple has a distinct form of influence. Neither conclusion establishes control over all AI compute, and the two companies are not substitutes for every workload.
