Apple Watch Ultra 4 is easiest to recommend to people who will use its outdoor, training, or endurance features. Its more frequent heart-rate sensing and longer rated battery life are meaningful upgrades, but the case and display are unchanged from Ultra 3, and some advertised software features were not ready for reviewers to test. For current Ultra 3 owners, the case for upgrading depends on whether those health and battery changes matter more than the limited physical changes.
What changed in Apple Watch Ultra 4?
Apple announced Ultra 4 on September 9, 2026, with availability scheduled to begin September 18. The main changes highlighted at launch are a redesigned Health Sensing System, a Readiness feature, and longer battery ratings. Tom’s Guide’s September 2026 hands-on reporting says Ultra 4 retains Ultra 3’s 49 × 44 × 12 mm dimensions and 3,000-nit display. Apple’s announcement and Tom’s Guide’s first impressions provide the launch details.
Five reasons to buy Apple Watch Ultra 4
1. More frequent health sensing
Apple says Ultra 4 measures heart rate every five seconds throughout the day and measures heart-rate variability (HRV) more frequently than before. It also introduces Readiness, a feature intended to help users assess their preparedness for activity. Apple calls the watch’s heart-rate sensing its most accurate in a wearable and says a study involving more than 1,000 participants found Apple Watch had the highest heart-rate accuracy among leading wearables. That is Apple’s description of its study and its comparative claim, not an independently established result for every wearer.

2. Longer published battery ratings
Tom’s Guide reports rated smartwatch battery life of 50 hours for Ultra 4, compared with 42 hours for Ultra 3; its reported low-power ratings are 84 and 72 hours, respectively. These are published ratings, not results from a standardized head-to-head test. Separately, Apple advertises up to 45 hours of outdoor workout tracking—a manufacturer-stated maximum, not the same measure as everyday smartwatch battery life. Tom’s Guide’s reviewer also reported a week of personal use that included a 22-mile run, but that individual experience should not be treated as a guaranteed result. See the Tom’s Guide review for its account.

3. A toolkit aimed at outdoor and sport use
Apple lists GPS, workout tracking, a titanium case, a sapphire display, IP6X dust resistance, and a customizable Action button. It also specifies WR100 water resistance for recreational scuba diving to 40 meters. These are Apple’s stated specifications and capabilities; the ratings do not establish an independent long-term durability result.
4. A launch price in line with Ultra 3
Tom’s Guide reported a US starting price of $799 in September 2026, matching Ultra 3’s launch price. Price and availability can change by retailer, configuration, and market, so check the current local listing before buying.

5. New software features may add value later
Live Rewind and Siri Recap were presented as upcoming features, but hands-on reviewers could not test them in September 2026 and described them as later rollouts. Treat them as potential future benefits rather than reasons to assume Ultra 4 already delivers those functions. TechRadar’s September 17, 2026 hands-on report also discusses the watch’s endurance focus.
Two reasons to skip or wait
1. Ultra 3 owners get little visible change
The reported case dimensions and display brightness are the same as Ultra 3’s. If the look and screen are your main reasons for buying, Ultra 4 offers little apparent change. For an Ultra 3 owner, the more relevant upgrade questions are whether five-second heart-rate measurements, more frequent HRV readings, Readiness, and the higher published battery ratings justify replacing a watch that already meets your needs.

2. The case remains large, with no smaller Ultra option
Ultra 4 remains a single 49 × 44 mm case size. Tom’s Guide’s reviewer says it wears large on an average-sized wrist. If fit is uncertain, try it on before buying; readers who do not need the Ultra’s outdoor or dive capabilities may find a smaller Apple Watch model a better fit. This evidence set does not establish a complete, like-for-like comparison with the standard Apple Watch lineup.

| What to compare | Apple Watch Ultra 4 | Apple Watch Ultra 3 |
|---|---|---|
| Rated smartwatch battery life, as reported by Tom’s Guide in September 2026 | 50 hours | 42 hours |
| Rated low-power battery life, as reported by Tom’s Guide in September 2026 | 84 hours | 72 hours |
| Case dimensions, as reported by Tom’s Guide | 49 × 44 × 12 mm | 49 × 44 × 12 mm |
| Display brightness, as reported by Tom’s Guide | 3,000 nits | 3,000 nits |
| All-day heart-rate frequency | Apple says every five seconds | Not stated in the cited sources |
| US price at launch | $799, reported by Tom’s Guide in September 2026 | Reported as matching Ultra 4’s launch price; exact figure not stated in the cited sources |
The battery figures are published ratings, not a controlled comparison of actual battery life. If you own Ultra 3, upgrade for the sensing and endurance changes only if they solve a real need; otherwise, the unchanged size and display make waiting a reasonable choice.

How to decide
- Buy: You want an Ultra watch for outdoor workouts or endurance use, value more frequent health sensing, and can comfortably wear the large case.
- Wait: You are interested mainly in Live Rewind or Siri Recap and want to see those features available and assessed first.
- Skip the upgrade: You already own Ultra 3, its battery and health tools are sufficient, and a refreshed design or display would be the main reason to replace it.
- Check fit first: You are unsure about the 49 mm case or do not need the Ultra-specific outdoor and dive capabilities.
