Can I use my Apple Wallet driver’s license instead of my physical ID? Only in places that specifically support that credential. A state driver’s license or ID in Apple Wallet works at participating TSA checkpoints and at participating businesses, venues, apps, and websites; it is not a universal replacement for the plastic card.
For travel, government interactions, uncertain age checks, and international borders, carry the physical credential or another document on the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) acceptable list. Apple’s passport-derived Digital ID is a separate feature and does not replace a physical passport.
What “accepted in Apple Wallet” actually means
Adding a license or state ID to Wallet proves that an eligible issuing authority and Apple can provision the credential on your device. It does not create a legal requirement for every checkpoint, merchant, venue, police officer, or government office to accept it. The receiving organization must have the equipment, software, policy, and authorization to verify that particular Wallet credential.
Apple describes use at select TSA checkpoints and at participating businesses, venues, apps, and websites. “Participating” is the key limitation: an airport may support digital identification in some lanes while another checkpoint in the same airport does not, and a business that accepts one Wallet identity workflow may not accept another.

The plastic license remains the broad-use fallback. It is still subject to the rules of the place you are visiting, but it does not depend on a compatible identity reader, an enrolled device, a supported operating-system version, or a charged phone or watch.
Apple Wallet ID and a physical ID compared

Will TSA accept my ID in Apple Wallet?
Sometimes. Apple says a driver’s license or state ID in Wallet can be presented at select TSA checkpoints. Acceptance depends on the particular checkpoint, the credential’s issuing jurisdiction, and the checkpoint’s reader and procedures. An airport’s general statement that it supports digital identification does not guarantee that every lane or every flight-day operation will support your Wallet credential.
Check the checkpoint, not just the airport
Before leaving for the airport, check the airport’s current instructions, look for digital-ID signage at the checkpoint, and review Apple’s current support guidance. If staff direct you to a different lane, follow that instruction; a compatible reader may be installed only in a designated position.

REAL ID still governs state licenses
TSA requires adults age 18 and older to show valid identification at the checkpoint. Since May 7, 2025, TSA says a state license or ID that is not REAL ID compliant is no longer accepted as valid airport identification. Putting a noncompliant card in Wallet does not bypass that rule.
Bring a REAL ID-compliant license or state ID, or another credential on TSA’s current acceptable list. If TSA cannot confirm your identity, you may face additional screening and may be denied access to the security checkpoint. A temporary driver’s license is not on TSA’s acceptable-ID list, so do not assume a temporary paper document will solve a problem.
Other TSA-accepted credentials
TSA’s live list includes alternatives such as:
- Enhanced driver’s licenses and enhanced state IDs.
- U.S. passports and passport cards.
- Trusted-traveler cards listed by TSA.
- U.S. military identification.
- Permanent-resident cards.
- Qualifying tribal identification.
- Other documents that TSA adds to its current list.
TSA says its list can change without notice. Check the live TSA guidance close to departure and verify that your document is valid for your itinerary. Do not rely on an expired or noncompliant license being accepted.

Where a Wallet license can work outside airports
Participating businesses and venues
Apple describes identity and age-verification use cases at participating businesses and venues. The merchant or venue must choose to support the Wallet identity flow and have a compatible reader or process. Acceptance is therefore local and policy-based, not a blanket property of every store, bar, stadium, hotel, rental counter, or event entrance.
Ask before relying on Wallet ID for an age-restricted purchase, check-in, or entry. If the venue requests a physical card, Wallet presentation will not compel it to change its procedure.
Apps and websites
Some participating apps and websites can request information from an ID in Wallet for identity or age verification. The app or site must implement the supported verification technology; a normal camera upload or a generic digital-copy field is not the same thing. If the service does not display a Wallet verification option, expect to use its other approved document process.
Law enforcement and government offices
Apple explicitly says a Wallet ID is not a replacement for a physical ID. Whether an officer, courthouse, licensing office, benefits agency, or other government body can accept it depends on that jurisdiction’s law and the agency’s procedures. Carry the original physical credential whenever an encounter could involve law enforcement or an official document check.
Do I still need to carry my physical driver’s license?
Yes, if you want a dependable credential for situations that are not clearly supported. Keep the physical license with you when traveling, driving, crossing jurisdictions, entering a government facility, dealing with law enforcement, or visiting a business that has not confirmed Wallet acceptance.

A phone or watch that is lost, damaged, out of power, locked out, running an unsupported system, or unable to complete biometric authorization cannot reliably serve as your only identification. A physical card avoids those failure modes.

Apple’s passport-derived Digital ID is a different credential
Apple’s Digital ID created from a U.S. passport is not the same as a state driver’s license or state ID in Wallet. Apple describes it for identity verification at select U.S. TSA checkpoints before domestic travel. It is not a government-issued passport and cannot be used instead of a physical passport for international travel or border crossing.
Requirements Apple lists for Digital ID
Apple’s support instructions say Digital ID requires all of the following conditions:
- An authentic, unexpired U.S. passport.
- Supported iPhone or Apple Watch hardware and supported software.
- The device region set to the United States.
- Apple Account two-factor authentication enabled.
- Bluetooth turned on.
- A stable Wi-Fi or cellular connection during setup or use as required by the flow.
These requirements apply to the passport-derived feature and should not be assumed to be identical for every state-issued license. Issuer, device, and software eligibility can differ.

- It cannot replace the physical passport at an international border.
- It does not establish a right to enter another country.
- It does not make every TSA checkpoint compatible.
- It does not turn a state license in Wallet into a passport or a universal travel document.
Carry the physical passport for international trips, border crossings, and any transaction that specifically requests a passport booklet or passport card.
How Wallet presentment works at a supported reader
At a participating location, the process is designed so you can authorize only the requested information on your device. Apple’s instructions describe presenting the credential by bringing the iPhone or Apple Watch near an identity reader in person.
- Tell the agent or service that you are presenting the supported ID in Apple Wallet, and confirm that its reader accepts that credential.
- Hold the iPhone or Apple Watch near the reader when prompted. Do not hand over the device.
- Review the information the reader requests on the device screen.
- Authorize the disclosure with Face ID or Touch ID, following the on-screen prompt.
- Wait for the reader or agent to confirm completion before moving away.
For Digital ID at TSA, Apple notes that the reader may capture your image to compare it with the image presented from the credential. This is part of the checkpoint’s verification process; it does not mean you must unlock the phone for an agent or surrender it.

Adding a state license or ID: eligibility and setup considerations
A state or territory must participate before its license can be added. You also need an eligible Apple device and software combination, and you must satisfy the issuing authority’s identity-verification rules. Apple and Apple Developer documentation describe issuer-specific availability and compatibility, so the presence of an “Add to Apple Wallet” option for one state does not establish availability in another.

- Confirm that your state or territory is an active participating issuer.
- Update the iPhone or Apple Watch to a supported software version.
- Use the Apple Account and security settings required by Apple’s current instructions.
- Have the physical license available for scanning and verification.
- Complete any selfie, document, or authority verification steps exactly as requested.
Enrollment does not guarantee acceptance at a particular merchant or TSA lane. It only makes the credential available for supported presentment scenarios.

The checkpoint says it does not accept Wallet ID
Use your physical REAL ID-compliant license or another TSA-listed document. Ask staff whether a designated digital-ID lane is available, but do not delay security screening by insisting on a reader that is not operating.
Your license is in Wallet but is not REAL ID compliant
Bring a different TSA-acceptable credential. Wallet storage does not change the underlying status of the state license, and TSA’s May 7, 2025 rule still applies.
Your phone or watch will not present the credential
Check battery level, Bluetooth, network availability, software support, and biometric authentication. If any requirement fails, switch to the physical credential rather than attempting repeated presentations at the checkpoint.

A merchant asks for the plastic card
Follow the merchant’s policy. Participation is optional, and staff may be required by their payment, age-verification, licensing, or fraud-control procedures to inspect a physical document.

You are crossing an international border
Present the physical passport and any visa, permit, or destination-specific document required. Neither a state ID in Wallet nor passport-derived Digital ID substitutes for border documents.
How broad is Apple Wallet ID availability?
Availability has expanded over time, but published rollout figures are historical snapshots rather than a current acceptance map. In an Apple Newsroom announcement dated November 12, 2025, Apple reported that licenses or state IDs could then be added in 12 states and Puerto Rico. The same announcement described an initial Digital ID rollout at more than 250 U.S. airports.
Those figures describe the announcement or launch plan, not the number of checkpoints accepting a Wallet credential today. Airport participation, issuer eligibility, software support, and local operating procedures can change. Check current Apple and TSA guidance before relying on the feature.
Choosing the right credential for a trip or transaction

Privacy and control during presentation
At a supported reader, Apple’s flow lets you review the requested fields and authorize sharing with Face ID or Touch ID. The design is intended to disclose the information requested by the verifier rather than require you to hand over an unlocked phone. You should still read the prompt carefully: authorization confirms what the participating organization is asking to verify.
Privacy controls do not expand acceptance. A business that has no supported reader or policy cannot process the credential merely because the information is stored on your device.
What Apple says about the purpose of Digital ID
When Apple announced Digital ID on November 12, 2025, Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, said: “With the launch of Digital ID, we’re excited to expand the ways users can store and present their identity — all with the security and privacy built into iPhone and Apple Watch.” The statement describes the feature’s intended convenience and controls; it does not promise universal acceptance or replace government-issued physical documents.
Practical checklist before you leave
- Identify the exact destination: TSA checkpoint, merchant, venue, app, government office, or border.
- Confirm that the destination accepts your specific Wallet credential, not merely digital IDs in general.
- For flights, verify that your state license is REAL ID compliant or pack another credential on TSA’s current list.
- Charge the iPhone or Apple Watch and keep Bluetooth and connectivity available when required.
- Carry the physical license or passport whenever the consequence of refusal is high.
- Recheck TSA and Apple guidance shortly before travel because participation and rules can change.
Bottom line: which one should you use?
Use Apple Wallet ID when the receiving location explicitly supports it and you want a quick, controlled presentation. Use the physical ID when acceptance is uncertain, when an authority may require the original, or when traveling internationally. For air travel, treat Wallet support as a convenience layered on top of TSA’s REAL ID and acceptable-document rules—not as an exemption from them.
