Neither Apple Upgrade nor Verizon is automatically the cheaper way to get an iPhone. Apple Upgrade is a lease with a return-or-buy outcome; Verizon sells the phone through device payments and may apply promotional credits over time. To find which saves you the most money on an iPhone, compare the same model, storage and time period, include the required wireless plan, and subtract only credits you can actually receive.
This comparison covers U.S. offers checked October 7, 2026. Your result depends on your plan, trade-in, account eligibility and whether you want to keep the phone.

What Apple Upgrade and Verizon deals actually include
Apple Upgrade is a lease, not a purchase loan
Apple says its U.S. iPhone Upgrade leases are provided by Klarna and offer 12- or 24-month terms. You generally return the phone at the end of the lease; you do not own it unless you pay the purchase fee. Lease approval and upgrade eligibility are not guaranteed, and an eligible carrier is required. Prepaid plans are excluded. Review Apple’s Apple Upgrade terms and launch details before applying.

For iPhone 18 Pro 256GB, Apple’s September 2026 example lists a $1,199 purchase price and typical lease payments of $34.99 per month for 24 months or $49.99 per month for 12 months. Those example payments exclude taxes and trade-in credit and are subject to credit approval and eligibility. Multiplying the example monthly amounts gives $839.76 over 24 months or $599.88 over 12 months; neither total includes taxes, possible fees, or the cost to buy the device at lease end. The shorter term has higher monthly payments, so compare the full period and end-of-lease choice rather than just the monthly bill. Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro launch material has the offer details.

Verizon combines device payments with service and possible credits
Verizon’s catalog lists the iPhone 18 Pro at $1,199.99 retail or $33.33 per month for 36 months at 0% APR. The device payment is not the total cost of having the phone: add the required service plan, applicable taxes and fees, and any balance left at the end of your comparison period. Verizon also displays a no-trade-in offer for customers switching to Verizon with its Simplicity Plan, but the headline alone does not establish your total savings. How to compare the total cost fairly
Choose one comparison window—such as 24 or 36 months—and use the same iPhone model and storage for both offers. Calculate:

Do not subtract an advertised maximum credit unless you qualify for the trade-in, plan, account and payment conditions and expect to stay eligible for the full credit period. Verizon applies promotion credits to monthly bills over the promotion or device-payment term. According to its device promotions FAQ, credits may stop if you pay off early, upgrade early, cancel the service line or move to an ineligible plan. Some existing-customer trade-ins also require the traded device to have been active on a Verizon account for 60 consecutive days.
Use the same inputs for both quotes
- Your current carrier and plan, and whether you are switching or upgrading.
- The exact iPhone model and storage capacity.
- Your trade-in model and condition, plus any balance still owed on it.
- The account-specific promotion, required plan and eligibility conditions you can verify at checkout.
- The comparison period and whether you want to keep or return the phone.
- Applicable taxes, fees, switching costs and any device balance left at the end of the period.
If any of these inputs differs between offers, the quoted monthly device payment or credit ceiling is not an apples-to-apples measure of savings.

How much are Apple’s and Verizon’s advertised credits worth?
Apple’s September 2026 iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max launch offer advertises up to $1,200 in carrier credits after trading in an iPhone 14 or newer in any condition. Apple names AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon, but the maximum is subject to each carrier’s terms—not a guaranteed discount for every buyer. Confirm the offer’s eligibility, credit schedule and required plan with Verizon before using it in your calculation.
Apple’s iPhone 17 shopping page illustrates why credits must be matched to the exact model and offer: it displayed maximum credits of $900 for AT&T, $1,000 for T-Mobile and $840 for Verizon, alongside a $929 device-only price for the 256GB iPhone 17. What can change Verizon’s early-upgrade math?
Verizon’s early-upgrade terms, version dated September 24, 2026, describe a device-payment route for iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max that requires the existing device to be under a 36-month agreement, returned in good working condition and replaced under a new 36-month agreement. Returning the phone means this route is not directly comparable to simply owning a fully paid-off device. Check the Verizon early upgrade terms for the applicable conditions.
Separately, Apple says it is ending the U.S. iPhone Upgrade Program, an older installment program distinct from Apple Upgrade leases. Existing members may continue current monthly payments through their 24-month term. When eligible for another phone, Apple lists Apple Upgrade, carrier financing, Apple Card Monthly Installments and outright purchase as possible paths. Do not treat the legacy program as the same product as Apple Upgrade; Apple’s iPhone Upgrade Program page explains the transition.
Which option is likely to fit your situation?
Apple Upgrade may suit you if
- You prefer a shorter, defined lease term and expect to return the phone rather than own it.
- You want to compare lease payments without assuming a carrier’s maximum promotional credit will be available to you.
- You have confirmed you meet Apple’s carrier and lease eligibility requirements and understand the return and purchase-fee terms.
Verizon may suit you if
- You already use Verizon or are willing to switch and have verified that the required plan fits your budget.
- Your account qualifies for a promotion and you can remain on an eligible plan and line through the credit term.
- You want the device-payment route and have considered its 36-month term, early-upgrade conditions and ownership outcome.
These are fit considerations, not a universal price verdict. Plan rates and account-specific promotions can change the result, and a large advertised credit can be outweighed by service costs or lost credits if you leave the qualifying arrangement early.
