On a Siri Remote (2nd generation or later), press the Mute button once to mute audio and press it again to restore sound. The button does not work with every audio setup; Apple says some setups require you to use your TV remote’s volume controls instead.
How to mute and unmute Apple TV audio
- On a Siri Remote (2nd generation or later), press the Mute button once to mute audio.
- Press the Mute button again to turn audio back on.
These are Apple’s instructions in its Support guide, “Use Siri Remote or Apple TV Remote with your Apple TV.” Whether the button works depends on the connected audio setup.
Which Apple TV remote has a Mute button?
Apple documents the dedicated Mute button on Siri Remote (2nd generation and later). Its guide treats the first-generation Siri Remote separately and does not list a Mute button for that model. Apple’s product page identifies Siri Remote (3rd generation) as a remote for Apple TV 4K.
Apple introduced the redesigned remote in April 2021, describing it as having a power button for the TV and a separate mute button. That launch announcement explains the button’s purpose; the current Support guide provides the operating instructions.

Why the Mute button may not work
Apple cautions that some audio setups do not support the remote’s Mute button. If pressing it does not mute the sound, use the volume controls on the remote supplied with your TV. Apple’s published guidance does not establish that the button works with every television, receiver, or speaker configuration.
What the button does—and what it does not establish
The Mute button toggles audio mute on supported setups. Apple’s available guidance does not describe an additional feature beyond muting and restoring audio, so a reference to an unspecified “added feature” cannot be verified or explained as a separate function.
