If Apple TV 4K does not offer 4K, HDR, or Dolby Vision, the usual cause is a capability or HDMI-path mismatch—not a failed streaming box. Verify the television and Apple TV generation, use a compatible HDMI input with its enhanced mode enabled, inspect Settings > Video and Audio, then test the cable and bypass intermediate equipment. The steps below isolate each possible limit without guessing.

What a missing format option means

Apple TV 4K builds its available video choices from the capabilities reported by the connected display. The television, the specific HDMI input, the selected refresh rate, an AV receiver or soundbar, an HDMI switch or splitter, and every cable in the chain can change what Apple TV sees. Therefore, a missing Dolby Vision or 4K choice does not by itself prove that the Apple TV is defective.

Apple’s settings guide notes that available options vary by Apple TV model, display, and selected format. A television may support 4K on one input but not another, or support HDR10 while lacking Dolby Vision. A receiver may pass 4K but strip HDR, while a cable can make an otherwise compatible link unstable.

Symptom Most useful distinction First place to investigate
No 4K option The TV input, cable, or an intermediate device may be limiting resolution. TV input specification and direct Apple TV connection.
4K appears but HDR is absent The input may have enhanced HDMI disabled, or the display may support 4K without HDR on that port. Per-input HDMI setting and the TV manual.
HDR10 works but Dolby Vision is absent The television, input, title, refresh rate, or route may not support Dolby Vision. Display’s Dolby Vision support at the selected rate.
Options appear but the screen flickers or goes blank The television may be changing modes, or the HDMI link may be marginal. Match Content behavior, HDMI test, and cable.

Apple’s technical specifications list Dolby Vision (Profile 5) up to 2160p at 60 frames per second, plus HDR10+, HDR10, and HLG with HEVC up to 2160p at 60 frames per second. Those are device capability ceilings, not a promise for every television, application, title, HDMI port, receiver, or cable. Read them as limits of the Apple TV hardware, not as a guarantee of what your installation will negotiate.

1. Confirm that the television and Apple TV support the target format

Check the exact television model

Use the television’s manual or manufacturer’s specifications for the exact model and region. Confirm all three items separately:

  • Whether the panel accepts 3840 × 2160 (4K) at the refresh rate you intend to use.
  • Which HDR systems it accepts: HDR10, HDR10+, HLG, Dolby Vision, or a subset.
  • Which HDMI inputs support those formats and whether a particular input has bandwidth restrictions.

Do not infer Dolby Vision support from an HDR label. HDR10 support does not imply Dolby Vision support. Likewise, a television can advertise 4K while accepting HDR only through a designated HDMI input.

Account for refresh-rate limits

For automatic HDR10, HDR10+, or Dolby Vision selection at 60 Hz (50 Hz in Europe), Apple says the television must support the relevant format at that rate. A display that supports the format only at 30 Hz (25 Hz in Europe) may still work when Match Dynamic Range is enabled. Check the display manual for the rate-specific limitation instead of assuming that a format works at every refresh rate.

Identify the Apple TV generation

HDR10+ is supported only on Apple TV 4K (3rd generation). If you are seeking HDR10+, establish the generation before changing settings. Other formats still depend on the display and HDMI path; a supported Apple TV generation cannot add a format that the television or receiver does not pass.

2. Use the correct television HDMI input

Move Apple TV to a capable port

Connect Apple TV directly to the HDMI input identified by the television manual as supporting 4K and the required HDR format. Port labels such as “4K,” “HDR,” or a numbered high-bandwidth input are clues, but the manual is authoritative. If you change ports, select that input on the television before checking Apple TV’s choices.

Enable the port’s enhanced or high-bandwidth mode

Many televisions ship with a standard compatibility mode that does not expose the input’s full bandwidth. In the television’s picture, HDMI, or external-device settings, enable the option for the input being used. Apple gives Ultra, Deep, and Enhanced as examples of labels; the exact name and menu location vary by manufacturer and model.

Enable the setting only on the connected port, then return to Apple TV’s video menu. If the option is unavailable on that input, consult the manual: the port may not support the desired resolution or HDR system, or the television may require a different HDMI cable mode.

3. Check Apple TV’s video and matching settings

Select a format the display actually supports

  1. Open Settings on Apple TV.
  2. Choose Video and Audio.
  3. Review Format and select a resolution and dynamic range listed as supported by the connected television.

Apple TV determines the list from the display’s report, so the absence of a format is useful diagnostic information. Do not force Dolby Vision when the television supports only HDR10, and do not select a refresh rate that the display manual excludes.

Understand Match Dynamic Range and Match Frame Rate

Under Match Content, Match Dynamic Range lets Apple TV use a video’s original SDR or HDR range instead of converting everything to the fixed format selected above. Match Frame Rate lets it follow the source video’s frame rate. With either option enabled, the television may briefly blank or flicker while it changes modes; Apple documents that transition as expected behavior.

Matching can expose a rate-specific limitation. For example, a television may accept Dolby Vision at 30 Hz (25 Hz in Europe) but not at 60 Hz (50 Hz in Europe). In that case, automatic matching can work at the lower rate even though the higher-rate choice is unavailable.

Choose a compatible chroma setting

Apple’s settings guide identifies 4:2:0 as the broadly compatible chroma option. 4:4:4 requires a high-speed HDMI cable and a complete HDMI route that can carry it. If text looks wrong, the connection drops, or a selected format disappears after choosing 4:4:4, return to 4:2:0 while diagnosing the link.

Recover from a black screen after a change

If a video-setting change leaves the picture black, hold Menu and Volume Down on the Apple TV remote for five seconds. Apple TV cycles to another resolution every 20 seconds. When a picture returns, accept the compatible setting; otherwise allow the cycle to continue or cancel it as prompted.

4. Run Apple’s HDMI test and check the cable

Run Check HDMI Connection

  1. Open Settings > Video and Audio.
  2. Select Check HDMI Connection.
  3. Follow the on-screen test and note whether the connection is reported as stable.

This test is more useful than replacing a cable at random. If it reports instability, the picture drops out, or the cable’s format capability is unknown, reseat both ends and test another cable.

Match the cable to the HDMI link

Apple states that 4K video—especially HDR10, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision—requires an HDMI cable compatible with those formats. For an HDMI 2.1 connection, Apple recommends an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. For HDMI 2.0, it recommends a Premium High Speed HDMI cable. Apple also points to a cable carrying its Compatible Dolby Vision mark and gives a Belkin Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable as an example.

These labels address the signal path; they cannot upgrade a television input that lacks 4K or Dolby Vision. Replace the cable when the HDMI test, intermittent dropouts, or uncertain specifications point to it. If the cable passes the test and the display is unsupported, a new cable will not create the missing format.

Test every cable segment

When equipment sits between Apple TV and the television, there are at least two HDMI links to verify. Test Apple TV directly on the television first. If the direct connection works, reconnect the intermediary and replace or retest each segment separately.

5. Bypass receivers, soundbars, switches, and splitters

Use a direct-connection isolation test

  1. Turn off Apple TV and the television.
  2. Disconnect Apple TV’s HDMI cable from the receiver, soundbar, switch, or splitter.
  3. Connect Apple TV directly to the television’s known-capable HDMI input.
  4. Enable that input’s enhanced mode and check Settings > Video and Audio again.

If 4K, HDR, or Dolby Vision becomes available, the display and Apple TV are negotiating correctly. The removed device or one of its cables is constraining the route.

What to check on the intermediary

  • Verify that the exact HDMI input and output support the desired resolution and HDR format at the selected refresh rate.
  • Enable the intermediary’s enhanced or high-bandwidth HDMI mode if its manual requires one.
  • Update its firmware when the manufacturer documents a compatibility fix.
  • Check both the cable from Apple TV to the intermediary and the cable from the intermediary to the television.
  • Temporarily remove HDMI switches, splitters, capture devices, and other accessories; Apple warns that they can interfere with the HDMI signal.

If direct connection fails in the same way, reconnecting the receiver or soundbar will not solve the underlying limitation. Continue with the television capability, input, settings, and cable checks.

6. Update tvOS and reset video settings

Install the latest available tvOS update

After confirming the hardware route, update Apple TV’s software. A current tvOS version can contain fixes for display negotiation and format handling. Updating is a later step because software cannot compensate for an unsupported input, cable, or HDR system.

Reset only the video configuration

Apple’s settings guide lists Reset Video Settings under Settings > Video and Audio. Use it when the connection is known to be capable but a previous manual choice left Apple TV in an incompatible mode. After the reset, return to the same menu and select a format the television lists as supported, then re-enable Match Content options deliberately.

A video reset does not add Dolby Vision to an HDR10-only display and does not repair a failing HDMI cable. It clears a configuration mismatch so that Apple TV can negotiate again with the connected display.

How to interpret the result

Test result Likely conclusion Next action
The format is absent even when Apple TV is direct-connected, with the correct input and enhanced mode. The television or its selected rate may not support that format. Use the format the display manual lists; do not force an unsupported one.
The format appears after enabling the TV’s enhanced HDMI mode. The input was operating in a lower-bandwidth compatibility mode. Leave enhanced mode enabled for that input.
The direct connection works, but the receiver or soundbar path does not. The intermediary, its firmware, its port, or one of its cables is limiting passthrough. Check passthrough specifications and test each HDMI segment.
Check HDMI Connection is unstable with one cable and stable with another. The original cable or its connection is the practical fault. Use the known-compatible replacement and reseat both ends.
The screen blanks briefly only when matching content. The television is changing dynamic-range or frame-rate modes. Allow the transition; investigate only if the picture does not return or repeatedly drops out.

Format limits worth keeping in mind

The following limits explain why a setting can be valid in one installation and unavailable in another:

  • Apple TV 4K hardware supports Dolby Vision (Profile 5) up to 2160p at 60 fps and HDR10+, HDR10, and HLG with HEVC up to 2160p at 60 fps, according to Apple’s current specifications.
  • HDR10+ support is limited to Apple TV 4K (3rd generation).
  • Automatic HDR10, HDR10+, or Dolby Vision at 60 Hz (50 Hz in Europe) requires the television to support that format at that rate.
  • A display may expose the format at 30 Hz (25 Hz in Europe) when Match Dynamic Range is enabled, even when the 60-Hz choice is unavailable.
  • 4:4:4 chroma needs a high-speed HDMI cable; 4:2:0 is the safer compatibility choice.

These are boundaries, not guarantees that every app or title is mastered in every format. A title’s available dynamic range can differ from the Apple TV’s output capability, and an application may request a mode only when playback begins.

Recommended order when you need a fast diagnosis

  1. Write down the exact television model, Apple TV generation, and the format that is missing.
  2. Use the television manual to confirm the format, refresh rate, and HDMI input.
  3. Enable that input’s Ultra, Deep, Enhanced, or equivalent high-bandwidth option.
  4. Connect Apple TV directly to the television and inspect Settings > Video and Audio.
  5. Set a supported format, then enable Match Dynamic Range and Match Frame Rate if you want source-based switching.
  6. Run Check HDMI Connection; reseat or replace the cable only when the test or specifications justify it.
  7. Reconnect the receiver, soundbar, switch, or splitter one device at a time and verify passthrough.
  8. Update tvOS and use Reset Video Settings if the known-good route still retains an incompatible configuration.

This order separates an actual capability limit from a disabled TV option, a cable fault, a passthrough restriction, and a stale Apple TV setting. It also avoids buying replacement hardware before the HDMI path identifies what is failing.
