For most 4K-TV owners, Roku Streaming Stick 4K is the best value alternative to Apple TV 4K. It is a compact $79.99 stick with Dolby Vision, HDR10+, a voice remote and long-range Wi-Fi. Choose Google TV Streamer (4K) at $149.99 when you need Ethernet, 32 GB of storage, casting or Google Home control. Choose Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Gen) for an Alexa-centered home and Wi-Fi 6E. The new Apple TV 4K (4th generation) remains the premium choice at a $299 U.S. launch price, particularly for Apple households and HomePod surround systems.

This guide compares the devices by price, picture and sound formats, networking, storage, interface and smart-home support. Apple announced the fourth-generation Apple TV 4K on October 13, 2026; availability is scheduled for November 13, 2026, so the $299 model is not yet available on October 17.

The short answer: which Apple TV 4K alternative should you buy?

  • Best compact 4K upgrade: Roku Streaming Stick 4K. It hides behind the television, supports Dolby Vision and HDR10+, and uses a long-range Wi-Fi receiver.
  • Best for Google homes and wired networks: Google TV Streamer (4K). Ethernet, 32 GB of storage, casting and Google Home/Matter integration justify its $149.99 list price.
  • Best for Alexa households: Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Gen). It combines 4K HDR, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, Wi-Fi 6E and 16 GB of storage. Check the current regional price and stock before ordering.
  • Best premium Apple experience: Apple TV 4K (4th generation). Its A19 chip, Siri AI, three far-field microphones, HomePod surround support and Apple Home role explain the $299 U.S. launch price.
  • Best if you want a Roku box rather than a stick: Roku Ultra at $149.99, provided you prefer a separate set-top box and its available features meet your needs.

The right alternative depends less on a headline speed claim than on the connection your television needs, the HDR and audio formats your system accepts, and the assistant and smart-home platform you already use.

What the 2026 Apple TV 4K sets as the benchmark

Apple’s fourth-generation Apple TV 4K is the premium reference point in this comparison. Apple announced it on October 13, 2026, with a U.S. launch price of $299 and availability beginning November 13. The device uses an A19 chip, which Apple says delivers up to 50% faster CPU performance and up to twice the GPU performance of the previous generation.

The new model adds Siri AI and three far-field microphones intended to make voice interaction practical from across a room. It also supports HomePod surround configurations and serves as a premium Apple Home hub. Apple describes it as “our most immersive home theater experience yet.” Siri AI features, like other generative or assistant functions, can have regional and language restrictions.

That feature set is valuable when your household already uses Apple services, Apple Home accessories or HomePod speakers. It is difficult to justify the price solely for 4K playback, because the alternatives below also cover 4K HDR and the major premium video formats. The premium is for integration, processing headroom, voice control and the home-theater ecosystem.

Best alternatives by budget and setup

Under $80: Roku Streaming Stick 4K

Roku Streaming Stick 4K is the clearest replacement for an older 4K television that needs a better streaming interface without adding a large box to the stand. Roku lists it at $79.99. Its stick format sits behind the display, and the included voice remote handles search and playback without requiring a phone.

The important picture specifications are 4K resolution, Dolby Vision and HDR10+. Dolby Vision is useful if your television supports dynamic HDR metadata; HDR10+ is useful on displays and services that use that competing format. The stick is HDMI-compatible, so it can connect to an available HDMI input rather than requiring a proprietary television port.

Roku emphasizes a long-range Wi-Fi receiver. That makes this model a sensible choice when the router is in another room and running Ethernet is impractical. Wireless performance still depends on wall construction, distance, congestion and the quality of the router; “long-range” is not a guarantee of a fast connection in every home.

Roku also works with AirPlay and HomeKit, Google Home and Alexa. That cross-platform support is useful in mixed-device households. It is less specialized than choosing a box built around one assistant, but it avoids forcing the rest of the family onto a single phone or speaker ecosystem.

Roku Ultra, Ultimate Streaming Player - 4K Streaming Device for TV | HDR10+, Dolby Vision & Atmos - Bluetooth & Wi-Fi 6 - Rechargeable Voice Remote Pro with Backlit Buttons - Free & Live TV
  • Ultra-speedy streaming: Roku Ultra is 30% faster than any other Roku player, delivering a lightning-fast interface and apps that launch in a snap.
  • Cinematic streaming: This TV streaming device brings the movie theater to your living room with spectacular 4K, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision picture alongside immersive Dolby Atmos audio.
  • The ultimate Roku remote: The rechargeable Roku Voice Remote Pro offers backlit buttons, hands-free voice controls, and a lost remote finder.
  • No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
  • Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.

Roku lists three Streaming Stick price tiers at $39.99, $59.99 and $79.99. The $79.99 Streaming Stick 4K is the tier identified here with Dolby Vision and HDR10+; do not assume the lower-priced sticks provide the same 4K or HDR formats without checking their individual specifications.

$149.99: Google TV Streamer (4K)

Google TV Streamer (4K) is the strongest alternative when a wired connection, local storage or Google Home integration matters more than the smallest possible form factor. Google lists a $149.99 price, 32 GB of storage and built-in Ethernet.

Ethernet is the decisive feature for homes where Wi-Fi is congested, the router is nearby, or a stable connection is needed for high-bitrate 4K streams. A wired link also avoids the compatibility questions that come with choosing among Wi-Fi generations. If you plan to use Ethernet, place the streamer where a network cable can reach it without a hazardous or unsightly run.

The device supports up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. Your television, soundbar or receiver must also support those formats; a streamer cannot add Dolby Vision to a display that only accepts HDR10, and it cannot produce Atmos from audio equipment that does not decode it.

Its 32 GB capacity gives more room for installed apps than a device with only 16 GB. Google TV’s casting support is convenient when you start a video on a phone or tablet and send it to the television. Google Home and Matter integration make the streamer a natural control point for compatible smart-home devices. Availability of assistant features, including Gemini for TV features where offered, can vary by language and region.

Google requires a separately purchased HDMI 2.1 cable. If you do not already have a suitable cable, include that accessory in the total cost rather than assuming the $149.99 device price is the entire installation budget.

Price varies: Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Gen)

Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Gen) is the specialist choice for an Alexa household. Amazon documents Wi-Fi 6E, 16 GB of storage and support for 4K HDR, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. Wi-Fi 6E can use the 6 GHz band when both the router and the local wireless environment support it; otherwise the stick connects using the bands available from your network.

Google TV Streamer 4K - Fast Streaming Entertainment on Your Device with Voice Search Remote - Watch Movies, Shows, Live, and Netflix in HDR - Smart Home Control - 32 GB of Storage - Hazel
  • The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]
  • HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
  • See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
  • Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
  • Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound

The 16 GB capacity is larger than the storage commonly found on basic streaming sticks, leaving more space for apps and downloaded content. Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos are conditional on the television and audio chain supporting them, just as they are on the Google device.

Amazon’s specification information used for this guide does not establish one universal list price. Retail prices, promotions and stock can change by country and date, so check the current listing for the exact “2nd Gen” model before purchasing. Do not confuse it with another Fire TV Stick generation that has a similar name but different wireless or storage specifications.

Alexa integration is the reason to choose this model over a similarly priced competitor. It fits homes that already use Alexa speakers, routines or smart-home controls. If your household primarily uses Google Home or Apple Home, the assistant advantage is smaller and the Google or Roku alternatives may be easier for everyone to operate.

$149.99: Roku Ultra

Roku Ultra is listed at $149.99, the same list price as Google TV Streamer. It is a separate Roku set-top box rather than a stick that disappears behind the television. That form factor can be preferable when the television’s HDMI ports are crowded, when you want the streaming hardware visible for easier access, or when a box better suits an existing media cabinet.

The product details used here do not establish a complete Ultra specification table, so choose it for the Roku platform and box design rather than assuming it has the exact same capabilities as Streaming Stick 4K. Confirm the current Ultra listing for video formats, included accessories and networking before checkout.

$299: Apple TV 4K (4th generation)

Apple TV 4K is the premium option rather than the value option. The fourth-generation model’s $299 U.S. launch price buys the A19 platform, Siri AI, three far-field microphones, HomePod surround possibilities and an Apple Home hub role. It is the most coherent choice when your household already owns Apple devices and speakers and wants one system for streaming, voice requests and home control.

Availability begins November 13, 2026. On October 17, 2026, the product is announced but not yet generally available, so any retailer claiming immediate delivery should be checked carefully for the generation and release status.

How to choose the right streamer

Start with the television’s HDR capability

Check the television manual or its input specifications before paying for a format it cannot display. Roku Streaming Stick 4K, Google TV Streamer and Fire TV Stick 4K Max all list Dolby Vision support, while Roku also lists HDR10+. A Dolby Vision-capable streamer will fall back to another supported HDR mode when the display lacks Dolby Vision, but the image will not gain Dolby Vision’s dynamic metadata.

Use the television’s highest-capability HDMI input for the streamer when the set labels inputs differently. If a soundbar or receiver sits between the streamer and television, verify that it passes the chosen 4K HDR format; an older receiver can become the limiting component.

Choose wired or wireless networking deliberately

  • Choose Ethernet: Google TV Streamer, when the router is close enough for a cable and you want the most predictable connection.
  • Choose long-range Wi-Fi: Roku Streaming Stick 4K when the router is farther away and a cable run is inconvenient.
  • Choose Wi-Fi 6E: Fire TV Stick 4K Max when your router and home network support 6 GHz and you want that newer wireless option.

None of these labels guarantees a particular streaming speed. Internet service, router placement and household traffic remain decisive, especially during peak evening use.

Match the interface and assistant to your household

Roku is the least disruptive choice for a mixed household because it supports AirPlay/HomeKit, Google Home and Alexa. Google TV Streamer is better if casting and Google Home/Matter routines are central to daily use. Fire TV Stick 4K Max is the logical fit for Alexa routines and Alexa speakers. Apple TV 4K makes the most sense when Apple Home, Siri AI, Apple services and HomePod surround are priorities.

Consider who will operate the remote. A platform that is familiar to the people watching every day is usually more valuable than a small specification advantage that nobody uses. Voice features can also depend on account settings, language and region.

Pay attention to storage and accessories

Google’s 32 GB and Amazon’s 16 GB are explicitly listed capacities. More storage helps if you install many apps or keep downloaded content, but it does not improve picture quality. Roku Streaming Stick 4K and Roku Ultra storage figures are not stated in the product details used here.

Budget for required extras. Google TV Streamer needs a separately purchased HDMI 2.1 cable. You may also need a longer HDMI cable, a replacement remote or an Ethernet cable depending on the room layout. A low advertised device price can become less attractive after those additions.

Installation checklist for any of these devices

  1. Check the ports. Identify an open HDMI input on the television and confirm that the television supports the intended 4K HDR mode on that input.
  2. Prepare power. Use the supplied power adapter or the manufacturer-approved power method rather than assuming the television’s USB port can provide enough current.
  3. Connect the network. Plug in Ethernet for Google TV Streamer if you want a wired link. Otherwise place a Wi-Fi stick where it has a clear path toward the router; avoid enclosing it behind dense metal or inside a crowded cabinet.
  4. Select the input. Turn on the television, switch to the HDMI input used by the streamer and complete the on-screen setup.
  5. Update before judging performance. Allow the device to install its current system software and app updates. A first boot can be slower while updates and indexing complete.
  6. Sign in and set playback quality. Add the streaming-service accounts you actually use, then check the device and television display settings for 4K and HDR output. Do not force a mode that the television or receiver cannot accept.
  7. Test the complete chain. Play a known 4K title, check that the television reports the expected HDR mode, and test dialogue and surround sound before mounting or hiding the device.

Troubleshooting common problems

The picture is 1080p instead of 4K

  • Confirm that the title and service offer 4K; not every program does.
  • Try another HDMI input and check the television’s input-enhanced or UHD setting if the manufacturer provides one.
  • Remove an older receiver or soundbar temporarily to determine whether it is blocking 4K HDR pass-through.
  • For Google TV Streamer, verify that the HDMI 2.1 cable is installed and securely connected.

Dolby Vision or HDR10+ does not appear

The display may support only one HDR format, the service may be delivering a different stream, or an intermediate receiver may not pass the signal. Set the streamer to an automatic display mode where available, then test the device directly on the television. Roku Streaming Stick 4K’s HDR10+ support does not mean every service supplies HDR10+ titles.

Streaming buffers over Wi-Fi

Move the router or streamer to reduce walls and interference, pause large downloads and test the connection at the time buffering occurs. If the router is close enough, Google TV Streamer’s Ethernet connection removes the wireless link from the problem. If cabling is not practical, Roku’s long-range receiver or Fire TV’s Wi-Fi 6E option may fit the network better, but neither can overcome a slow internet plan or a congested provider connection.

Atmos or surround sound is missing

Check that the program carries an Atmos track, the subscription tier includes it where required, and the television, soundbar or receiver is configured to pass or decode it. Connect the streamer directly to the most capable component when troubleshooting. Google TV Streamer and Fire TV Stick 4K Max list Dolby Atmos support; the final result still depends on every device in the HDMI chain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Voice control responds incorrectly

Verify the account, microphone permissions, remote batteries and selected language. Siri AI and Gemini for TV features can be limited by region or language. In a mixed smart-home environment, using the platform that matches the household’s existing assistant usually reduces duplicate accounts and conflicting routines.

Price, availability and buying timing

The prices in this guide are list or launch prices from the manufacturers, not guaranteed sale prices. Roku lists Streaming Stick 4K at $79.99 and Roku Ultra at $149.99. Google lists Google TV Streamer (4K) at $149.99. Apple lists the fourth-generation Apple TV 4K at $299 in the United States, with availability beginning November 13, 2026. Amazon’s cited Fire TV Stick 4K Max specifications do not establish a single worldwide list price.

Before ordering, verify the exact generation, the seller’s delivery date, the destination country, included cables and remote, and return terms. Retailer discounts and inventory can change quickly. If you are buying before November 13, do not treat an announcement listing for Apple TV 4K as proof that the fourth-generation model is shipping.

Decision rules

  • Buy Roku Streaming Stick 4K when you want the smallest, least expensive 4K Dolby Vision/HDR10+ upgrade and rely mainly on Wi-Fi.
  • Buy Google TV Streamer (4K) when Ethernet, 32 GB of storage, casting or Google Home/Matter control is worth $149.99 to you.
  • Buy Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Gen) when Alexa and Wi-Fi 6E are the reasons to stay in Amazon’s ecosystem, after confirming current price and stock.
  • Buy Roku Ultra when you specifically want a Roku set-top box and have confirmed its current specification and accessory bundle.
  • Buy Apple TV 4K (4th generation) when Apple Home, Siri AI, HomePod surround and Apple services justify paying $299 rather than simply obtaining 4K playback.
