There is no evidence-based universal winner among the current generations. Apple TV 4K (4th generation) is the premium choice for Apple households and hands-free Siri AI home theater, but its U.S. price is $299 and retail availability starts November 13, 2026. Roku Ultra is the strongest feature-per-dollar option if you want broad HDR support, USB playback, fast Wi-Fi, and a rechargeable backlit remote. Google TV Streamer (4K) is the best fit for Google TV discovery, casting, Ethernet, and a Matter/Thread smart home. Independent scores often quoted online apply to older Apple and Roku generations, so they cannot settle this current three-way comparison.

Current lineup at a glance

The table uses the exact generations and U.S. information available on October 13, 2026. Prices, stock, software and regional features can change.

Google TV Streamer (4K) Current Google TV hardware $149.99 on the U.S. Google Store Up to 4K HDR, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, 32 GB, Ethernet, casting, Google Home, Matter and Thread Google accounts, recommendations, casting and smart-home control Independent ratings cited here are not a controlled test against the new Apple and Roku generations

Generation and timing matter more than a headline score

Apple’s product in this comparison is the fourth-generation Apple TV 4K, announced October 13, 2026. U.S. preorders open that day, while store availability starts November 13. A buyer ordering before November 13 is ordering a product that has not yet reached retail availability.

Roku’s current Ultra has replaced the Roku Ultra (2024) that appears in several detailed reviews. Tom’s Guide identifies the 2024 unit as its fully reviewed model and says the replacement still needs testing. A discounted 2024 box is therefore not the same hardware as the current Ultra page describes, even if the product name looks almost identical.

#1 Best Overall
Roku Ultra, Ultimate Streaming Player - 4K Streaming Device for TV
  • Ultra-speedy streaming: Roku Ultra is 30% faster than any other Roku player, delivering a lightning-fast interface and apps that launch in a snap.
  • Cinematic streaming: This TV streaming device brings the movie theater to your living room with spectacular 4K, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision picture alongside immersive Dolby Atmos audio.
  • The ultimate Roku remote: The rechargeable Roku Voice Remote Pro offers backlit buttons, hands-free voice controls, and a lost remote finder.
  • No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
  • Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.

Consumer Reports’ 2026 buying guide gives the Roku Ultra (2024) an overall score of 78, the Google TV Streamer (4K) 69, and the Apple TV 4K (128GB, 2022) 68. Those results are useful context about those named products, not proof that the 2026 Apple or replacement Roku will rank the same way. Consumer Reports says its overall score combines test results; its picture-quality work examines image clarity, color accuracy and contrast, while ease-of-use and features include services, assistant support, gaming-controller support and wireless casting or mirroring.

Apple TV 4K (4th generation): the premium Apple-and-home-theater option

What the new hardware adds

  • A19 chip: Apple lists the chip as the processor for the new box and claims up to 50 percent faster CPU performance and up to twice the GPU performance compared with the previous generation. Those are Apple’s own comparisons, not independent measurements.
  • Siri AI: Apple describes a full-screen, conversational way to find something to watch. The available languages and some Siri AI functions depend on launch region and software, so check Apple’s regional specification information before buying for a non-U.S. household.
  • Hands-free microphones: Three far-field microphones are built into the device. Apple vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing Bob Borchers called the feature “completely hands-free” in Apple’s launch statement.
  • AV1 decoding: Dedicated AV1 decoding is listed in Apple’s specifications, which can reduce reliance on general-purpose processing when compatible services deliver that codec.
  • Modern connectivity: Apple lists Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, Thread, HDMI 2.1 and Gigabit Ethernet.
  • Storage: The announced configuration has 128 GB of storage.
  • Remote finding: Find My Precision Finding works with the Siri Remote, subject to the required compatible Apple devices and regional availability.

Why an Apple household may prefer it

Apple’s advantage is the continuity between the television, Apple accounts and other Apple services. If your household already uses iCloud, HomeKit, Apple media purchases and HomePod speakers, the box fits that environment rather than asking you to maintain a second account ecosystem. Thread also gives it a role in a compatible smart-home network.

Apple documents a four-speaker surround setup using compatible HomePod mini (2nd generation) or HomePod (2nd generation) speakers. That is a specific Apple-centered theater path: it can be compelling for an existing HomePod owner, but it is not a substitute for checking whether your television, receiver and speakers support the connection scheme you plan to use.

Trade-offs to understand

  • The announced U.S. price is twice the listed price of the Roku Ultra and Google TV Streamer. The extra cost is primarily buying Apple’s processor, ecosystem, microphone and home-theater features; it does not guarantee that every streaming service will look or sound better on every television.
  • Apple’s launch material emphasizes the HomePod surround system. Do not assume a particular HDR or audio passthrough format without checking the current Apple specifications page for your region and equipment.
  • Launch timing matters. A preorder date is not a delivery guarantee for every retailer or country, and Siri AI language support may differ outside the launch markets Apple names.

Choose Apple when

Choose the fourth-generation Apple TV 4K if Apple services and HomeKit are central to your home, you want a hands-free conversational search interface, or you intend to build the documented HomePod surround arrangement. It is the least rational choice if your main requirement is inexpensive access to common 4K streaming and you do not use Apple’s ecosystem.

Roku Ultra: the broad-format, practical value choice

What Roku’s current page documents

  • Video: 4K resolution at up to 60 frames per second, Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG.
  • Audio: Dolby Atmos support when the content, television and audio equipment are compatible.
  • Networking: Dual-band Wi-Fi 6 and 10/100 Ethernet.
  • Local media: USB playback, useful if you maintain a local library rather than streaming everything.
  • Remote: A rechargeable, backlit Voice Remote Pro with remote-finding features and Bluetooth Headphone Mode.
  • In the box: Roku says a Premium High Speed HDMI cable is included.

Roku advertises the current Ultra as “30% faster than any other Roku player.” That is a manufacturer comparison, not a benchmark against Apple TV 4K or Google TV Streamer, and it does not establish how quickly the three current boxes open the same application.

Why it can be the best fit

Roku is the straightforward choice for a mixed household that values a large service selection, a familiar TV-focused interface and a remote designed for use in a dark room. The combination of Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HLG, Atmos, USB playback and Ethernet covers more commonly requested hardware features than many entry-level streamers. Bluetooth Headphone Mode can also help when one person needs private listening.

The generation caveat

The frequently quoted Consumer Reports score of 78 belongs to Roku Ultra (2024). Tom’s Guide says Roku has since released a replacement and that its own published impressions are not a test of the new unit. Treat the current Roku page as the source for the new model’s specifications, but do not transfer the 2024 review’s speed, interface or picture conclusions to it.

Choose Roku when

Roku Ultra is the sensible pick when you want the lower price, wide HDR and audio-format coverage, local USB playback, a rechargeable backlit remote or a platform that does not require committing your household to Apple or Google accounts. It is also the option to wait on if you specifically require independently verified results for the replacement model; current cited testing has not yet supplied them.

Roku Ultra | Ultimate Streaming Player (Renewed)- 4K Streaming (2026)

  • Cinematic streaming: This TV streaming device brings the movie theater to your living room with spectacular 4K, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision picture alongside immersive Dolby Atmos audio.

Google TV Streamer (4K): the Google account and smart-home choice

Hardware and included requirements

  • Video and audio: Google lists up to 4K HDR, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, provided the content and connected equipment support them.
  • Storage: 32 GB, giving the device room for applications and downloads.
  • Network: Built-in Ethernet as well as wireless networking.
  • Smart home: Google Home control, Matter support and a built-in Thread border-router function for compatible accessories.
  • Remote: A ringing or finding function helps locate the remote.
  • Casting: Compatible phones, tablets and laptops can cast to the streamer.
  • Setup cable: Google says an HDMI cable is required and sold separately.

What makes Google TV different

Google TV organizes recommendations across supported services instead of treating each application as a completely separate destination. That approach is useful if your household searches for a movie or series first and decides which service to use second. Casting also makes it convenient to send a video, photo or music session from a compatible mobile device.

Matter and Thread matter only if your accessories and regional Google Home setup support them. They are not automatically a benefit for every buyer: a home with no compatible smart-home devices will notice the Ethernet and casting features sooner than the radio protocols.

Independent impressions and limits

What Hi-Fi?’s 2026 buyer’s guide gives Google TV Streamer four stars. Its reviewers praise a natural, balanced picture and detail, while criticizing sound and picture dynamism. Those are subjective review findings, not a controlled comparison with the newly announced Apple hardware or the replacement Roku Ultra. Consumer Reports’ score of 69 is likewise a model-specific guide result, not a prediction for every future software update.

Choose Google when

Choose Google TV Streamer if your household already uses Google accounts, Google Home, Android or casting, or if a Matter/Thread smart-home hub and 32 GB of storage are more useful to you than Apple’s hands-free Siri features or Roku’s USB playback and backlit remote.

Head-to-head comparison by the decisions that actually change the purchase

Decision axis Apple TV 4K (4th generation) Roku Ultra (current replacement) Google TV Streamer (4K)
U.S. price and timing $299; preorder October 13, 2026; retail November 13 $149.99 listed by Roku’s U.S. page; current replacement has no cited same-generation hands-on score $149.99 listed by Google’s U.S. Store
Video formats explicitly documented in the supplied product information Check Apple’s current specifications for exact HDR and passthrough details 4K up to 60 fps, Dolby Vision, HDR10/HDR10+, HLG Up to 4K HDR and Dolby Vision
Audio information Apple documents a four-speaker HomePod mini 2/HomePod 2 surround arrangement Dolby Atmos; compatible content and equipment required Dolby Atmos; compatible content and equipment required
Wireless and wired networking Wi-Fi 7; Gigabit Ethernet; Thread Wi-Fi 6; 10/100 Ethernet Ethernet; built-in Thread; wireless networking
Storage 128 GB Not stated on the cited product page 32 GB
Local or personal-media features Not established in the cited announcement USB local media playback Casting from compatible phones, tablets and laptops
Remote and control Siri Remote with Find My Precision Finding; three far-field microphones are built into the box Rechargeable backlit Voice Remote Pro, remote finding and Bluetooth Headphone Mode Remote ringing/finding and Google Assistant/Google TV controls
Smart-home emphasis HomeKit-oriented features and Thread Roku platform and remote features; no Matter/Thread capability is stated in the cited information Google Home, Matter and Thread

Format support still depends on the television, sound system, cable path, application and title. A box cannot create Dolby Vision from a display that lacks Dolby Vision, and a Dolby Atmos label does not guarantee the same speaker result in every room.

What the independent evidence can—and cannot—tell you

Consumer Reports scores

Product named by Consumer Reports (2026 guide) Overall score How to interpret it
Roku Ultra (2024) 78 Applies to the 2024 generation, not the replacement now listed by Roku
Google TV Streamer (4K) 69 Useful independent context for that model, but not a same-room test against the new Apple and Roku hardware
Apple TV 4K (128GB, 2022) 68 Applies to the 2022 generation, not Apple TV 4K (4th generation)

These numbers should stop you from declaring a winner from a search-result snippet. The highest score belongs to an older Roku generation, while the Apple score belongs to hardware two generations behind the announced 2026 model. The scores are not interchangeable with manufacturer claims such as Apple’s CPU/GPU percentages or Roku’s 30% speed statement.

What Hi-Fi?’s review context

What Hi-Fi? rates Apple TV 4K (2022) five stars and Google TV Streamer four stars. Its Apple review praises picture, audio and interface responsiveness while noting limited physical connectivity. Its Google review praises a natural, balanced picture and detail but criticizes sound and picture dynamism. These observations help describe reviewer priorities; they do not test the fourth-generation Apple TV or the new Roku replacement.

A practical decision tree

  1. Start with your household account. If most purchases, phones, speakers and smart-home devices are Apple-based, shortlist Apple. If Google Home, Android and casting dominate, shortlist Google TV. If you want the platform least tied to either ecosystem, shortlist Roku.
  2. Set your price ceiling. Apple’s announced U.S. price is $299. Roku and Google are each listed at $149.99. Decide whether the Apple-specific features justify the difference before comparing processor claims.
  3. Check the television and audio chain. Confirm that the display supports the HDR format you care about, that the receiver or soundbar accepts the desired audio signal, and that you have the required HDMI input. Atmos and Dolby Vision are conditional features, not guarantees.
  4. Decide whether local media matters. USB playback points toward Roku. Casting points toward Google. Apple’s announcement does not establish an equivalent USB feature.
  5. Decide whether smart-home radios matter. Thread and Matter are meaningful for compatible Google Home or Apple/HomeKit accessories; otherwise they should not outweigh price or remote preference.
  6. Check the calendar and generation label. Before ordering Apple, confirm the November 13 retail date and your region’s Siri AI support. Before ordering Roku, confirm that a listing is the current replacement rather than discounted 2024 stock.
  7. Budget for missing accessories. Google requires an HDMI cable sold separately. Roku says its Ultra includes a Premium High Speed HDMI cable. Apple’s exact in-box contents should be confirmed on the regional listing, especially if you need a particular cable or speaker arrangement.

Which box is best for common households?

Best for an Apple-first living room

Apple TV 4K (4th generation) is the logical match when iCloud, Apple media, HomeKit and HomePod speakers already organize the room. Siri AI and far-field microphones add a hands-free control path, while Wi-Fi 7, Gigabit Ethernet, Thread and 128 GB provide substantial headroom. The decision is about ecosystem integration and the new theater features, not an independently proven picture-quality lead.

Best for a mixed household that wants the most hardware features per dollar

Roku Ultra is the value-oriented answer on the published specifications: it combines the lower price with Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HLG, Atmos, Wi-Fi 6, Ethernet, USB playback and a rechargeable backlit remote. Because the replacement has not received the cited hands-on testing, buyers who need measured performance should wait for a current-generation review rather than treating the 2024 score as definitive.

Best for Google discovery and smart-home control

Google TV Streamer is the natural choice when recommendations, casting, Google Home, Matter, Thread and 32 GB storage are central. It is also the cleanest fit for someone who routinely starts viewing on a phone or laptop and moves it to the television. Remember to add an HDMI cable to the setup plan.

Best for a buyer who wants a proven independent ranking today

No current box wins this category from the cited evidence. Consumer Reports has a higher score for the 2024 Roku, but that is not the current Roku replacement; its Apple score is for 2022 hardware; and the new Apple model was only announced on October 13, 2026. A responsible choice requires matching the test generation to the box in your cart.

Bottom line

Buy Apple TV 4K (4th generation) for Apple integration, Siri AI and a HomePod-centered theater, accepting the $299 price and November 13, 2026 retail date. Buy Roku Ultra for the strongest published combination of format support, USB playback, Wi-Fi 6 and remote features at $149.99, while treating the replacement’s performance as not yet independently established. Buy Google TV Streamer for Google TV recommendations, casting, Ethernet, 32 GB and Matter/Thread smart-home control at $149.99. Your ecosystem, compatible television and audio gear, and the exact generation in the listing are better decision criteria than any universal winner claim.
