If your iPhone shows an Apple Threat Notification, Apple believes you may have been individually targeted by mercenary spyware. Treat a confirmed alert as serious, but do not trust an unexpected email, text, or phone call merely because it uses Apple branding. Open a browser yourself, go to account.apple.com, and sign in. Apple says a genuine notification will be clearly visible at the top of your Apple Account page.
What an Apple Threat Notification means
An Apple Threat Notification is a high-confidence warning that Apple’s threat-intelligence work indicates a particular person may have been targeted by mercenary spyware. It is not a general warning sent to every iPhone owner, and it is not the same as an ordinary software-update notice, an App Store warning, or a routine sign-in alert.
Apple describes these alerts as “high-confidence” notifications and says they should be taken very seriously. However, the alert is not a public forensic report. It does not explain exactly what happened on your phone, prove that a device was successfully compromised, identify the attacker, or establish when an intrusion occurred. Apple says its investigations cannot reach absolute certainty and that it does not disclose the detection details because doing so could help attackers adapt.

Verify the alert without using its links
The account-page check is Apple’s specific way to distinguish a real threat notification from a phishing attempt. Do this even if the message appears to come from an official-looking address or uses familiar logos.
- Open a browser on a device you trust.
- Type
account.apple.cominto the address bar yourself. Do not follow a link in the unexpected email, text message, or call. - Sign in to the Apple Account associated with the iPhone.
- Look at the top of the account page. Apple says a genuine threat notification will be clearly displayed there.
- If there is no alert on the account page, treat the message that prompted you to check as unverified. Do not provide credentials or install anything while trying to “confirm” it.
A sender address, caller-ID entry, or message design is not conclusive proof. Apple’s general scam guidance explains that caller ID can be spoofed and advises contacting the company through a known, official route when in doubt. Read the broader guidance at Apple’s social-engineering and scam guidance.
Where a genuine notification can appear
Apple’s current UK English support guidance, published August 13, 2026, says the presentation can vary by iPhone model and software version. As of 2026, you may see the warning in more than one place:
| Delivery channel | What Apple says to expect | How much to trust it by itself |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone Lock Screen | The alert may appear directly on the Lock Screen. | Do not use the screen alone as proof if the message asks you to follow an external instruction; verify at the account page. |
| Settings | The notification may be shown inside the iPhone’s Settings experience. | Use it as a prompt to check your Apple Account page and follow the alert’s own safety instructions. |
Apple may send an email to an address associated with your Apple Account. Apple currently lists threat-notifications@email.apple.com as the sender. |
A sender address alone is not authentication. Before April 2025, Apple says these emails came from threat-notifications@apple.com, so older messages may show a different address. |
|
| Apple Account page | After you sign in, a banner appears at the top of the account page. | This is the specific verification Apple tells recipients to use. |
Because Apple can change notification formats and sender details, rely on the current account-page banner rather than a saved screenshot, an old email address, or a message forwarded by someone else.
How to recognize a fake threat alert
Apple says its threat notifications never ask you by email or phone to take actions that would hand control to an attacker. A message is suspicious if it asks for any of the following:

- Online video installation instruction: Easiest Installation - removing dust and aligning it properly before actual installation, enjoy your screen as if it wasn't there.
- Your Apple Account password, a verification code, or recovery information.
- A click on a link supplied in an unexpected message.
- An attachment or file to be opened.
- An app, configuration profile, or other software to be installed.
- Money, gift cards, cryptocurrency, or remote access to your device.
A threatening deadline, unusual sender domain, grammatical errors, or a request to keep the alert secret are additional warning signs, but none replaces the account-page test. Do not call a number supplied in the message. Instead, navigate to Apple’s site yourself or use a support route you already know is genuine.
What to do after Apple confirms the warning
If the notification is visible after signing in, avoid panic-driven changes that could destroy useful evidence. Apple strongly recommends seeking expert help, because a specialist can tailor advice to your risk, accounts, devices, and work. Apple specifically names Access Now’s Digital Security Helpline as a rapid-response resource. Apple notes that outside organizations cannot know what internal signal triggered the alert, but they can still provide practical security guidance.
- Read the alert carefully. Follow the steps Apple presents with that notification. Save the text for your records without forwarding suspicious links or attachments.
- Contact an expert through an independently verified address. Use Apple’s support information or the Digital Security Helpline’s own website, not contact details supplied by a caller or an unexpected email.
- Consider Lockdown Mode. Apple includes Lockdown Mode among the protective steps recipients should consider. It substantially restricts certain features to reduce attack surface, so discuss the effect on messaging, browsing, attachments, and work tools with a qualified adviser before relying on it for a long-term workflow.
- Update software. Install current iOS and other device updates from the normal Settings software-update mechanism. Keep Macs, iPads, browsers, and other devices tied to the same Apple Account current as well.
- Secure the account. Confirm that two-factor authentication is enabled, replace a weak or reused Apple Account password with a strong unique one, and review account information for changes you did not make.
- Protect the iPhone locally. Use a strong passcode and keep Touch ID or Face ID enabled where appropriate. Do not share the passcode with an unsolicited “support” caller.
- Review applications and links. Install apps through the App Store, remove software you do not recognize after consulting an expert, and avoid links or attachments from unknown senders.
Do not assume that changing one password, erasing the phone, or turning on a single setting answers every security question. The right response depends on your devices, accounts, contacts, and threat model.
What Apple’s warning does—and does not—establish
The alert establishes that Apple has reason to believe you were individually targeted. It does not publicly establish:

- Which application, message, website, or account was involved.
- Whether spyware successfully ran on the iPhone.
- Whether another device, cloud account, or contact was affected.
- The identity, country, employer, or customer behind the suspected operation.
- The exact date or duration of the attempted targeting.
Apple withholds detection details to avoid giving attackers a playbook for evading future detection. That means even a security professional helping you may not be able to name the precise trigger. A lack of technical detail is therefore a limitation of the public notice, not evidence that the notice is fake.
Do not confuse this alert with ordinary Apple security messages
Apple sends many legitimate account and device messages: password-change confirmations, two-factor authentication codes, unusual-sign-in notices, lost-device notifications, and operating-system update prompts. Those messages can be important, but they do not mean Apple has identified mercenary spyware targeting you.
The distinctive test for a Threat Notification is the high-confidence targeted-spyware warning and its presence at the top of your Apple Account page after you sign in directly. A routine security email that is absent from that page should not be relabeled as a threat notification simply because it sounds urgent.

- Stop communicating with the sender and do not click further links.
- From a device and network you trust, change the affected password and any other account that reused it.
- Check two-factor authentication methods, trusted devices, recovery addresses, and recent account activity for unauthorized changes.
- Contact Apple through a route you entered manually and tell a qualified security adviser exactly what happened and when.
- If financial information or identity documents were provided, contact the relevant bank or authority using its official contact details.
Do not “test” a suspected attacker by replying, downloading another diagnostic app, or accepting a remote-support session. Those actions can expose more information and complicate professional assessment.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Everyday protections Apple recommends
Apple’s advice for people who receive a notification overlaps with good baseline security for everyone:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Install current software updates promptly.
- Use a device passcode and biometric protection such as Touch ID or Face ID.
- Enable two-factor authentication for the Apple Account.
- Choose a strong, unique Apple Account password and do not reuse it elsewhere.
- Download apps from the App Store rather than unknown distribution channels.
- Be cautious with links and attachments from unknown senders.
- Be suspicious of unexpected requests for personal information, security codes, or money.
These measures reduce common account-takeover and phishing risks, but they are not a guarantee against a sophisticated targeted operation. A confirmed alert warrants individualized advice rather than a checklist-only response.
Why the sender address and date matter
Email infrastructure changes over time. Apple says the current sender for threat-notification email is threat-notifications@email.apple.com, while messages sent before April 2025 used threat-notifications@apple.com. A message using the older address may be genuine, archived, or spoofed; the address cannot settle the question by itself.

When to seek urgent help
Seek specialist assistance quickly if the account-page warning is confirmed and you are a journalist, activist, elected official, diplomat, researcher, executive, dissident, lawyer, or otherwise likely to be of interest to a well-resourced adversary. Also seek help promptly if you observe unexplained account changes, device behavior that began around the alert, or suspicious activity affecting colleagues or family members.
Keep a dated record of the alert, the devices and accounts involved, messages received, and steps already taken. Preserve original emails and headers when possible, but do not open attachments or revisit suspicious links merely to collect evidence. An adviser can tell you what to preserve safely.
