Comparing Apple with Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, or another large technology company starts with the businesses—not the ticker symbols. Use the same fiscal period labels, operating metrics, cash-flow measures, reinvestment requirements, balance-sheet information, share-count data, valuation date, and company-specific risks for every stock. The available annual filings do not establish synchronized October 2026 prices, market capitalizations, valuation multiples, forecasts, or expected returns, so this framework explains what to collect and how to interpret it without declaring a winner.
What a useful Apple-versus-peer comparison should answer
A serious comparison should answer five questions in order:
- What does each company sell, and how does it get paid? A hardware sale, a subscription, cloud consumption, digital advertising, and an online-marketplace transaction can all appear as revenue while having different repeat rates, margins, and costs.
- How fast are sales and profits changing? Revenue growth is only useful when paired with operating margin, cash generation, and the spending required to produce the next dollar of sales.
- How much reinvestment is required? Research and development, data centers, manufacturing capacity, inventory, acquisitions, and working capital can make two companies with similar earnings produce very different free cash flow.
- What resources and obligations support the strategy? Cash, marketable securities, debt, leases, supplier commitments, and other obligations affect resilience and financial flexibility.
- What price is the market assigning to those economics? A multiple is meaningful only when its date, denominator, accounting basis, growth assumption, and risk context are clear.
The comparison is analytical, not a buy, sell, or “best stock” verdict. A lower multiple does not by itself mean higher expected returns or superior value.
Align the fiscal calendars before comparing figures
The companies do not close their books on the same date. Put the period end beside every number and avoid treating the filings as one synchronized quarter or year.

| Company | Latest fiscal filing covered | Period end | How to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple | FY2025 Form 10-K | September 27, 2025 | Label revenue, margins, cash flow, and share data as Apple FY2025. |
| Microsoft | FY2025 Form 10-K | June 30, 2025 | Label figures as Microsoft FY2025; the period ends almost three months before Apple’s. |
| Meta | FY2025 Form 10-K | December 31, 2025 | Label figures as Meta FY2025; its year ends after both Apple and Microsoft. |
| Amazon | FY2025 Form 10-K | Not stated in the supplied filing extract | Use the exact period end shown in Amazon’s filing when collecting comparable metrics. |
Why timing changes the interpretation
Currency movements, product launches, holiday demand, advertising cycles, cloud usage, semiconductor availability, and interest rates can change materially between June, September, and December. A fiscal-year growth rate is therefore a period-specific observation, not a simultaneous market snapshot. If you need a synchronized view, use the latest reported quarter for each company, state each quarter-end date, and explain the remaining timing mismatch.
Keep accounting definitions consistent
Use reported figures from each filing first. Then check whether a margin, “free cash flow,” segment measure, or adjusted profit is defined the same way across companies. If one company excludes stock-based compensation or acquisition costs and another does not, put the measures in separate columns rather than implying comparability. Never blend trailing-twelve-month, forward-estimate, calendar-year, and fiscal-year data without labeling each one.
Start with the businesses that generate the earnings
Apple: an integrated hardware-and-services model
Apple’s FY2025 filing describes products and services. Products expose results to unit demand, launch timing, component costs, manufacturing capacity, channel inventory, and product transitions. Services can create a different revenue pattern, but they still depend on installed devices, customer engagement, pricing, regulation, and the terms of third-party platforms. Separate product and services disclosures where the filing provides them instead of comparing Apple’s total revenue with a peer’s single segment.

It also says much of its manufacturing is performed by outsourcing partners, with a significant majority of manufacturing performed in whole or in part by partners primarily located in several Asian countries. That geographic and supply-chain structure should be part of the business-model analysis, not a footnote after the valuation.
Microsoft: software, cloud, and an expanding AI investment cycle
Microsoft’s filing presents a portfolio with software, cloud, and other technology services. For comparison, identify which revenue is recurring or consumption-based, which depends on software licenses or subscriptions, and which requires large infrastructure investment. Microsoft’s FY2025 filing describes AI technology and services as a highly competitive and rapidly evolving market. That statement makes it important to test whether growth is accompanied by sustainable pricing, capacity, and cash returns rather than assuming that an AI-related label guarantees durable economics.
Amazon: multiple businesses with different economics
Amazon’s filing covers a portfolio whose activities can have very different gross margins, working-capital patterns, and capital needs. Separate the economics of retail operations, marketplace activity, advertising, and cloud services when the filing provides the necessary segment detail. Consolidated revenue can rise while the mix shifts toward businesses with different margins or reinvestment requirements, so explain the mix change before drawing a conclusion from a single growth rate.
Meta: advertising-led demand with platform and infrastructure exposure
Meta’s filing describes a business centered on digital platforms and advertising, alongside substantial technology and infrastructure investment. For a peer comparison, distinguish user and engagement indicators from revenue, and revenue from operating profit and cash flow. Advertising sensitivity to the economic cycle, privacy and measurement changes, regulatory actions, and spending on new computing capacity can all alter the path from reported sales to free cash flow.

- Principal products, services, and reportable segments.
- Recurring, subscription, consumption, transactional, or advertising components, with the filing’s terminology.
- Customer concentration and geographic exposure where disclosed.
- Deferred revenue, remaining performance obligations, backlog, or other forward indicators when the filing reports them.
- Seasonality, launch cycles, and mix changes that make year-over-year comparisons misleading.
Do not call a revenue stream “recurring” merely because customers often return. Use the company’s disclosed contract or billing characteristics and state any uncertainty.
Compare growth and profitability together
Revenue growth: identify the source, not just the percentage
Calculate year-over-year growth using comparable reported periods, then decompose it into price, volume, foreign-exchange effects, acquisitions, divestitures, and mix when management provides those details. A company can post strong growth because of an acquisition or currency translation even when underlying demand is slower. Conversely, a mature business may show modest consolidated growth while a high-margin segment expands rapidly.
Gross margin: check what is included
Gross margin can reveal product mix, pricing power, component costs, hosting costs, and infrastructure utilization. But definitions differ. Some businesses classify large infrastructure or fulfillment costs in cost of revenue; others classify certain expenses elsewhere. Compare each company’s reported definition, show the numerator and denominator, and avoid ranking gross margins without an accounting note.

Operating margin shows how much revenue remains after operating costs, including research and development, sales and marketing, and general and administrative expenses under the company’s accounting presentation. Track both the reported margin and the change from the prior comparable period. Explain whether a change reflects pricing, mix, head-count growth, infrastructure depreciation, restructuring, stock-based compensation, or a one-time item disclosed in the filing.
Cash conversion: test whether earnings become cash
Record operating cash flow and capital expenditures for the same period, then calculate a consistently defined free-cash-flow measure such as operating cash flow minus capital expenditures. State whether capital expenditures include finance leases or other items and whether the company uses a different non-GAAP definition. Working-capital movements can temporarily lift or depress cash flow, so inspect receivables, inventory, payables, deferred revenue, and other operating assets and liabilities.
Per-share results require the share count
Compare diluted earnings per share and diluted weighted-average shares, not just net income. Repurchases can make per-share growth exceed total-profit growth; stock-based compensation or new issuance can dilute ownership even while earnings rise. Explain the capital-allocation decision and its effect on per-share results.
Measure reinvestment and the resources needed for growth
Research and development
R&D spending indicates the resources devoted to products, platforms, chips, software, and long-term projects, but a larger absolute amount is not automatically better. Compare R&D as a percentage of revenue, its year-over-year change, and the products or capabilities management says it supports. Capitalize nothing yourself unless you clearly label an analytical adjustment; reported expense and capitalized development are not interchangeable.
Capital expenditures and infrastructure
Capital expenditures can include manufacturing equipment, stores, logistics facilities, data centers, servers, networking, and office property. Compare both the amount and the intensity relative to revenue and operating cash flow. A company investing heavily may have lower near-term free cash flow while building capacity; a mature company may generate more cash today but face replacement or transition costs later.

Working capital and operating commitments
Inventory, supplier deposits, payment terms, cloud capacity commitments, leases, and purchase obligations can consume cash before revenue appears. Read the commitments and liquidity sections of each filing. For a device business, component availability and channel inventory can matter as much as reported demand. For a cloud or advertising platform, data-center capacity and long-term infrastructure commitments can shape future depreciation and cash flow.
Acquisitions and other uses of cash
Separate organic investment from acquisitions, securities purchases, dividends, and repurchases. A cash-flow statement can show a large outflow without revealing whether it was intended to expand operations or return capital. Use the notes and management discussion to identify the purpose and recurrence of each item.
Examine balance-sheet strength and obligations
Balance-sheet quality is more than the cash line. For every company, collect:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Cash and cash equivalents, short-term investments, and other liquid resources.
- Total debt, maturities, interest rates, and secured obligations.
- Operating and finance lease liabilities.
- Deferred revenue and other contract liabilities.
- Purchase commitments, guarantees, legal contingencies, and supplier obligations disclosed in the filing.
- Goodwill and acquired intangible assets, which can create impairment risk if expected growth weakens.
Use net debt only after defining which investments are truly liquid and whether leases are included. A company with substantial cash can still face large recurring commitments, while a company with modest net cash can have a flexible, asset-light model. Compare liquidity with the spending required by the stated strategy, not with an arbitrary “cash per share” target.
Interpret shares, repurchases, and market capitalization correctly
Use the right share-count date
Amazon’s FY2025 Form 10-K reports 10,734,920,870 common shares outstanding as of January 28, 2026. That is a dated filing figure, not a current October 2026 share count. Use the latest official share count available for the valuation date and distinguish it from diluted weighted-average shares used for earnings per share.
Separate market capitalization from business quality
Market capitalization is a price-times-share-count snapshot. It describes the market value assigned at a particular time; it does not measure margins, competitive strength, financial resilience, or expected returns. Enterprise value adds debt and other claims and subtracts qualifying cash, but the components must be defined consistently across companies.
Read repurchases alongside dilution
Repurchases reduce the share count only when buybacks exceed issuance and other share-based compensation. Compare beginning and ending basic shares, diluted weighted-average shares, repurchase dollars, and stock-based compensation. A shrinking diluted count can improve per-share results; a stable or rising count can absorb part of the benefit of higher profits.
Use valuation measures with a date and denominator
The available filings do not establish synchronized October 13, 2026 share prices, market capitalizations, valuation multiples, consensus forecasts, or expected returns. Do not turn historical market values reported for an older filing date into current statistics. Before publishing or acting on a comparison, retrieve a fresh, timestamped market-data source.

Choose a denominator that matches the business
| Measure | Formula | Best use | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price-to-earnings | share price / earnings per share |
Profitable companies with reasonably stable accounting earnings. | Distorted by one-time items, buybacks, losses, or different forward and trailing periods. |
| Enterprise-value-to-operating profit | enterprise value / operating income |
Comparing capital structures when operating income is positive and consistently defined. | Lease treatment, depreciation, and unusual items can differ. |
| Price-to-sales | market capitalization / revenue |
Early-stage or low-margin businesses where earnings are not yet useful. | Ignores margins, capital intensity, and cash conversion. |
| Free-cash-flow yield | free cash flow / market capitalization |
Businesses with positive, recurring cash generation. | Free cash flow definitions and temporary working-capital effects require inspection. |
Label trailing and forward data
A trailing multiple uses historical results; a forward multiple uses an estimate. Never place them in one table without explicit labels. If estimates are used, record the forecast date, provider, currency, and whether the estimate is company guidance or an external consensus. A valuation conclusion should say what growth, margin, reinvestment, and risk assumptions are embedded in the price.
Use scenarios instead of a single target
Build bear, base, and bull cases with transparent assumptions for revenue growth, operating margin, capital expenditures, working capital, share count, and discount rate. The purpose is to show sensitivity, not to manufacture precision. If the evidence does not support a parameter, mark it as unknown and explain what new disclosure would change the analysis.

| Company | Risks identified in the filings or relevant to the comparison | What to test |

| Apple | Competition, product introductions and transitions, macroeconomic conditions, global operations, trade restrictions and tariffs, component sourcing, regulation, supply-chain concentration, and pressure on sales and gross margins. | Watch product and services mix, geographic demand, supplier concentration, tariff developments, component costs, inventory, and gross-margin guidance. |
| Microsoft | AI technology and services are described as highly competitive and rapidly evolving; broader execution, regulatory, infrastructure, and platform risks also require review of its own filing. | Compare AI-related revenue or costs only where disclosed, then test infrastructure spending, competition, adoption, pricing, and margin effects. |
| Amazon | Use Amazon’s filing for its own retail, cloud, advertising, logistics, regulatory, labor, infrastructure, and execution exposures; do not import another company’s risk list. | Examine segment profit, fulfillment and infrastructure spending, working capital, capacity commitments, and regulatory developments. |
| Meta | Use Meta’s filing for advertising demand, platform and privacy regulation, measurement changes, infrastructure investment, and execution risks. | Track engagement and monetization disclosures, capital intensity, regulatory costs, and the effect of investment programs on cash flow. |
Apple’s filing states: "The Company’s products and services are offered in highly competitive global markets." Treat that as a company disclosure, not as a forecast. The same discipline applies to every risk statement: identify the potential mechanism, the financial line it could affect, and the evidence that would confirm or weaken it.

A repeatable comparison workflow
- Set the date. Write the market-data timestamp and the fiscal period end for every company.
- Collect primary filings. Download the latest annual and quarterly reports for Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta, then record each company’s accounting definitions and segment structure.
- Map the businesses. List products, services, segments, customer types, geographies, recurring elements, and major seasonality.
- Build a period-aligned operating table. Enter revenue, growth, gross margin, operating income, operating margin, operating cash flow, capital expenditures, free cash flow, and diluted shares with period labels.
- Reconcile cash and investment needs. Add R&D, infrastructure spending, working-capital movements, acquisitions, leases, and other commitments.
- Analyze capital allocation. Record dividends, repurchases, issuance, stock-based compensation, debt changes, and the resulting share-count trend.
- Fetch valuation inputs on the same date. Use one market-data source for price and share count, state whether each multiple is trailing or forward, and keep currencies and units consistent.
- Stress-test the conclusion. Vary growth, margin, capital expenditure, discount rate, and share-count assumptions. Identify which assumption drives the result.
- Write a conditional conclusion. State which business characteristics support or weaken each valuation under the stated assumptions; do not convert uncertainty into a ranking.
Common comparison mistakes and how to fix them
Comparing different fiscal years as if they were simultaneous
Problem: Apple FY2025 ends September 27, 2025, Microsoft FY2025 ends June 30, 2025, and Meta FY2025 ends December 31, 2025.
Fix: Print the period end beside every figure or use synchronized quarter ends with an explicit timing caveat.
Using revenue as a proxy for business quality
Problem: Revenue does not show margin, cash conversion, customer concentration, or reinvestment needs.
Fix: Pair growth with operating margin, operating cash flow, free cash flow, R&D, capital expenditures, and working-capital analysis.

Calling a lower multiple “cheap”
Problem: A low multiple can reflect slower growth, weaker margins, greater capital needs, balance-sheet obligations, or higher execution and regulatory risk.

Fix: Use dated, consistently defined multiples and explain the operating assumptions that justify them.
Confusing a filing share count with today’s share count
Problem: Amazon’s 10,734,920,870 shares were reported as of January 28, 2026, not as of the current market date.
Fix: Match price and shares to the same date and distinguish basic, diluted, and weighted-average counts.

Generalizing one company’s risks to every technology stock
Problem: Supply-chain tariffs may be central to Apple while AI competition is a distinct disclosure for Microsoft.
Fix: Read each company’s own risk factors and connect each risk to a specific revenue, cost, cash-flow, or valuation assumption.
How to present the final comparison
A reader-friendly conclusion can use a matrix with one row per company and columns for business model, growth source, margin trend, cash conversion, reinvestment intensity, balance-sheet flexibility, valuation date, and principal risks. Every cell should include the period or date. Mark unavailable or non-comparable values as not stated rather than filling gaps with estimates.
Then describe the trade-offs in conditional language: a company may suit an investor who values recurring revenue and cash generation, while another may offer greater exposure to reinvestment-led growth but more sensitivity to execution or infrastructure spending. Those are analytical characteristics, not promises of performance.
The strongest Apple-versus-peer analysis therefore ends with an evidence checklist: the data dates match, accounting definitions are reconciled, cash needs are visible, share counts are current for the valuation date, and each risk is tied to a measurable business driver. Without those controls, a table of ticker symbols and multiples can look precise while answering the wrong question.
