Choose Apple Sports if your priority is the fastest, least-cluttered way to check scores and get glanceable game updates. Choose ESPN if you want scores alongside breaking news, highlights, play-by-play, radio, podcasts, live video, on-demand events and ESPN+ programming. Both apps can surface live updates on an iPhone, but they serve different jobs: Apple Sports is a focused scoreboard, while ESPN is a broader sports hub.
Neither choice is permanently superior for every league or country. Coverage, supported competitions, Live Activities behavior and viewing requirements change as the apps are updated. If you want a recap, analysis, video clip or audio program after checking the score, ESPN keeps those formats in the same app. Its breadth is the main reason to choose it over a score-only experience. ESPN can be just as useful when you already live in its ecosystem, especially if you want the score and an immediate highlight or article. Getting Apple Sports updates onto the Lock Screen

Before choosing an app, search each one for the exact competition, team and country you care about. A sport can be available in one market but absent or limited in another because data and media rights differ. The presence of a score also does not guarantee that a live video stream is available.
What to verify before a major season
- Your country is supported by the app’s current release.
- The league or tournament appears in the follow or search interface.
- Your team’s games provide the alert type you want, such as score changes or game starts.
- Any desired broadcast is listed in the where-to-watch information or Apple handoff options.

Do you need ESPN+ to use the ESPN app?

ESPN setup: a practical first-day checklist
