Apple says Safari can provide up to five more hours of video streaming than Chrome on a MacBook. That is a maximum, vendor-reported result for continuous video playback—not a guaranteed five-hour extension for every MacBook, browser task or owner.
The reported Apple test used a specific machine and workload. Your result may be smaller, nonexistent or different depending on the Mac model, macOS and browser versions, screen brightness, network conditions, battery health and what you do in the browser.
What Apple is claiming
Apple’s current Safari webpage states: “Up to 5 hours more streaming videos compared with Chrome.” The wording matters: Apple says up to, identifies video streaming as the workload and compares Safari with Chrome. It does not establish five additional hours for general browsing, web applications, video calls, coding or mixed daily use.
Apple presents the result as an advantage of developing Safari for Apple hardware and integrating it closely with macOS. Its Safari campaign also makes separate privacy and performance statements; those claims should not be treated as independent evidence of the five-hour battery result.

What the reported test setup was
iGeeksBlog reported that Apple’s footnote described a 15-inch MacBook Air with an M5 chip and 16 GB of memory. The machine played 1080p video on battery, and the test was conducted in August 2026, according to that report.
Those details describe the equipment and conditions, not a measured battery duration that applies to every MacBook. The full Apple footnote was not directly available in the surfaced product-page material, so the setup should be understood as iGeeksBlog’s account of Apple’s test conditions rather than a personally verified procedure.

Will you notice a difference on your MacBook?
Possibly, especially if you watch long video streams away from a charger. But Apple’s result cannot predict your exact runtime. A different MacBook model, display size, chip, battery age or operating-system release changes power use. So do active web apps, many open tabs, extensions, high brightness, weak Wi-Fi or cellular tethering, external displays and background processes.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Video playback is also unusually specific. A browser may use hardware video decoding differently from another browser, while a web application can spend far more energy on scripts, graphics and network activity. A result measured during uninterrupted 1080p playback therefore should not be converted into a general “Safari lasts five hours longer” rule.

How to make a fair Safari-versus-Chrome check
You can test the claim on an existing Mac without buying hardware or accessories. The goal is not to reproduce Apple’s result exactly, but to compare the browsers under conditions you actually care about.
- Update macOS, Safari and Chrome, then restart the Mac so background updates and installers are not running.
- Charge the battery fully and disconnect the charger. Record battery health and the starting percentage.
- Set the same display brightness, audio level, power mode, Wi-Fi network and location for both trials.
- Use the same video service, account, title and resolution. If you want a workload closer to Apple’s reported setup, select 1080p and avoid changing quality during playback.
- Run the video in Safari until you reach a defined stopping point, recording elapsed time and remaining battery. Repeat the trial in Chrome under the same conditions.
- Close unrelated tabs and extensions, or document them and keep them identical. Do not compare one browser with extensions enabled against another with a clean profile.
- Repeat on another day if the result is surprising. A single run can be distorted by indexing, cloud synchronization, downloads, room temperature or network changes.
Keep your own measurements separate from Apple’s headline claim. They are useful for deciding which browser suits your machine and workload, but they are not a controlled replication unless the hardware, software, video, settings and procedure all match.

What independent evidence does—and does not—show
The available independent commentary does not provide a matching, controlled replication of Apple’s 2026 video test on the same MacBook, with the same browser versions and conditions. One long-term experiment described by Birchtree characterizes its later testing as non-scientific and therefore cannot verify Apple’s five-hour figure. Wattmate measured Chrome battery consumption on two machines, but that is not a controlled Safari-versus-Chrome comparison.

What you should do with the claim
- If you stream video frequently: Try Safari first on the Mac you already own and measure it under your normal settings.
- If you rely on web applications: Test those applications directly; video-streaming results may not carry over.
- If a site or extension works better in Chrome: The possible battery advantage may not outweigh compatibility or workflow costs.
- If you are considering a new MacBook: Do not treat this claim alone as a reason to buy a particular model. The reported MacBook Air was test equipment, not a purchasing recommendation.
Switching browsers costs nothing, and the evidence does not create a reason to purchase a charger, replacement battery or manual. The sensible decision is to compare Safari and Chrome on your own Mac, for the tasks that consume your battery.
