Apple Pro Display XDR is a 32-inch 6K professional LCD monitor introduced in 2019. Apple positions it as a reference display for workflows such as video editing, photography, color grading, visual effects, 3D animation, and game development. Its defining specifications include 576 local-dimming zones, P3 wide color, 10-bit color depth, and distinct sustained and peak HDR brightness ratings.
What is Apple Pro Display XDR?
Pro Display XDR is a standalone display, not an all-in-one Mac. Apple lists a 32-inch diagonal IPS LCD panel using oxide TFT technology, with a resolution of 6016 by 3384 pixels. That is about 20.4 million pixels at 218 pixels per inch, in a 16:9 aspect ratio. Apple introduced the display in 2019. Apple’s technical specifications provide the current published figures.
Apple describes it as a high-grade reference monitor intended for demanding media and visual-production work. That is the company’s positioning, not an independent finding that it is the best choice for every user or workflow. Apple Developer’s presentation discusses its use in professional production contexts.

What does XDR mean on this display?
Apple uses XDR to mean Extreme Dynamic Range, describing brightness and contrast beyond standard dynamic range (SDR) and high dynamic range (HDR). For Pro Display XDR, the published brightness ratings refer to two different conditions: 1,000 nits sustained across the full screen, and up to 1,600 nits peak for HDR content. The display is also specified at a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio. These numbers are product specifications from Apple, not independent laboratory measurements. Apple’s explanation of XDR describes the term.

- PIXEL SHARPENER — A 27-inch 5K Retina XDR display takes brightness, color, and responsiveness to the next level.* Combined with an advanced camera, three-mic array, six-speaker sound, and powerful Thunderbolt 5 capabilities, it’s the ultimate display for pros.
- NOTHING SHORT OF BRILLIANT — Mini-LED backlighting with 2304 dimming zones reduces halo and blooming. Up to 1000 nits SDR brightness means you can work more easily in bright light. And 2000 nits peak HDR brightness brings greater contrast to highlights and shadows.*
- EVEN WIDER COLOR GAMUT — With access to both P3 and Adobe RGB color spaces, P3 + Adobe RGB delivers precision from screen to print. And there are a wide range of reference modes for filmmakers, photographers, and graphic designers.
- ULTRA-SMOOTH MOTION — 120Hz refresh rate makes motion smoother. Adaptive Sync allows for varying frame rates with precision control, ensuring motion remains as responsive as possible.
- PACKED WITH POWER, AND PORTS — Two Thunderbolt 5 ports for high-speed accessories, fast-charging Mac laptops, or daisy-chaining a second Studio Display XDR for 29 million pixels of total screen space. And two USB-C ports are perfect for USB peripherals or charging your iPhone.
The display’s backlight uses 576 full-array local-dimming zones. Apple also specifies P3 wide color and 10-bit color depth, supporting 1.073 billion colors. The backlight design and timing controller are discussed in Apple’s 2020 technology overview.
What are the reference modes for?
Reference modes adapt color, brightness, gamma, and white point to different media standards or production needs. Apple lists factory-calibrated options including:

Apple describes HDR Video (P3-ST 2084) for 4K or ultra-high-definition video production up to 1,000 nits full-screen sustained in a controlled viewing environment set up according to ITU-R BT.2100. The P3-1,600-nit mode is a general-use mode based on P3 with XDR support up to 1,600 nits peak. Professionals whose workflow depends on a particular calibration instrument can recalibrate the display. Apple’s reference-mode guidance provides further detail.
What should you know about setup?
Pro Display XDR is sold in standard-glass and nano-texture glass finishes. The Pro Stand and VESA Mount Adapter are sold separately, so include the required mounting hardware when planning a setup. Apple lists refresh rates of 47.95, 48, 50, 59.94, and 60 Hz. Apple’s specifications also state that reference-mode selection, brightness control, True Tone, and user calibration require macOS Catalina 10.15.2 or later.

They are separate products with different sizes and specifications. Apple’s current lineup describes Studio Display XDR as a 27-inch 5K display with a 120Hz refresh rate, Adaptive Sync, mini-LED backlighting with 2,304 dimming zones, up to 1,000 nits SDR brightness, up to 2,000 nits peak HDR brightness, and P3 plus Adobe RGB color. Those figures belong to Studio Display XDR, not Pro Display XDR. Pro Display XDR is the 32-inch 6K display with 576 dimming zones and up to 1,600 nits peak HDR brightness. See Apple’s display lineup for the separate product details.
