Short answer: both apps can find podcasts and episodes by show, title, or other descriptive terms, but Apple documents a more specific way to search the words spoken inside an episode: open an available transcript and search for a word or phrase. Spotify’s published help explains podcast search, category browsing, featured episodes, show pages, follows, saves, and downloads, but the cited guidance does not document an equivalent transcript-search workflow. That is a documented feature difference, not proof that one service has better relevance, more complete results, or a superior search algorithm.

What “podcast search” can mean

People use the word search for several different jobs. Separating them makes the Apple Podcasts and Spotify comparison much clearer:

  • Finding a show: you know the program or creator and want its page.
  • Finding an episode: you know a title, guest, series, or subject and want a particular episode.
  • Discovering a subject: you have a broad interest but do not know which show covers it.
  • Finding a spoken mention: you know a word or idea was discussed somewhere in an episode and want to jump to that passage.

Apple’s iPhone documentation explicitly describes searches by category, title, person, or topic, with results that can lead to shows, channels, or episodes. It also describes a separate search field within a show’s episode list. Spotify’s Search help identifies podcasts as a searchable content type, while its podcast guidance describes featured episodes, categories, and opening a show page to view available episodes. These are documented workflows, not published measurements of search quality.

Apple Podcasts: finding shows, episodes, and topics

Search by title, person, topic, or category on iPhone

On iPhone, Apple’s current guide for iOS 27 describes the main search route as the way to look for a podcast by category, title, person, or topic. The result may be a show, channel, or individual episode, so inspect the result type before opening it. The labels and layout can change with software updates; the official instructions are at Apple’s Find podcasts on iPhone guide.

  1. Open the Podcasts app and go to Search.
  2. Enter the most useful identifying term you have: a show name, host or guest, episode title, topic, or category.
  3. Review the result groups and open the show, channel, or episode that matches your intent.
  4. If you opened a show, use its episode-list search field rather than scanning the entire catalog manually.

A broad topic query is useful when you do not know the show. A distinctive guest name or phrase is usually more useful when you remember who appeared but not the episode title. If the first query is too narrow, remove extra words and try the core subject, person, or series name.

Search within a known show

When you already know the program, open its show page and search the episode list. Apple documents episode-list searching separately from the global search field. The show page can also provide episode sorting and conditional filters where those controls are available in the current app version. This is the quickest route when a show has published many episodes and you remember only a guest, recurring segment, or subject.

  1. Use the main Search screen to locate the show by title, host, or topic.
  2. Open the show page, then locate the episode-list search control.
  3. Enter a guest name, subject, or distinctive title word.
  4. Use the available sorting or filtering controls to narrow the list, then open the episode.

Searching inside the known show avoids confusing similarly named programs in global results. It also lets you use the show’s own episode catalog as the scope, which is valuable when the same topic appears in several programs.

Discovering a show when you do not know its name

Apple documents several discovery routes in addition to typing a query:

  • Top Charts: browse chart listings by category.
  • New and trending or editorial collections: use Apple’s curated groupings to explore current selections.
  • Recommendations: view personalized suggestions in the app.

These routes answer a different question from exact search. They can surface programs when you know the subject but have no show name, while a direct query is better when you remember a precise title or person. Recommendations are personalized, so two listeners may not see the same set of programs.

Spotify: searching and browsing podcast content

Use Search for podcast results

Spotify’s Search help says that podcasts are included as a content type. Open Search, enter a show name, episode phrase, creator, or topic, and select the podcast or show result presented by the current app interface. Spotify’s support labels differ by market; the cited Search page is the Canada-region version at Spotify’s Search help.

  1. Open Spotify and choose Search.
  2. Enter the identifying term you have, such as a podcast title, host, guest, or subject.
  3. Choose the podcast-related result rather than a music result when both appear.
  4. Open the show page or episode, then verify the title and description before playing.

Spotify’s public instructions establish that podcasts are searchable, but they do not provide a comparative score for relevance, coverage, or freshness. Do not treat a result appearing first as evidence that Spotify has found the objectively best match.

Browse featured episodes and categories

Spotify’s podcast guidance describes browsing featured episodes and categories as an alternative to a typed query. This is helpful when your interest is broad, such as business, history, technology, or comedy, and you want to see available programs rather than identify one exact episode. The podcast support page used here is the UK-region version at Spotify’s Podcasts and shows help.

  1. Open the podcast browsing area from the current Spotify app navigation.
  2. Review featured episodes or select a category relevant to your subject.
  3. Open a show to inspect its available episode list.
  4. Play an episode or save it for later if it is a useful lead.

Featured and category collections are editorial or catalog-based discovery, not a search inside every spoken word. They can help you find a show to investigate, after which the show page becomes the practical scope for locating episodes.

Open a show page to inspect its episodes

Spotify documents opening a show’s page to see the episodes available for that show. If you know the series but not the episode, this is the natural second step after global Search. Scan titles and descriptions, and use any sorting or filtering controls that the current app exposes. The exact controls can differ by device and software version, so follow the labels shown in your installation.

Follow, save, and download useful results

Spotify’s podcast instructions document following shows, saving episodes, and downloading for offline listening. Following is appropriate when you want future releases from a series; saving is useful for a single episode you found during research; downloading is useful when you expect to listen without a connection. Apple’s guide likewise describes following a show to add it to your library and provides episode filtering and download controls in its podcast workflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These library actions do not improve the underlying search results. They simply preserve a result once you have found it, so you do not need to repeat the query later.

Can you search inside the spoken content of an episode?

Apple’s documented transcript workflow

Apple’s Mac Podcasts guide describes searching for a word or phrase in an episode transcript when a transcript is available. This is the most distinctive documented feature for finding a topic that may not appear in the episode title or description. The Mac guide is available at Apple’s Podcasts User Guide for Mac.

  1. Open the episode in Apple Podcasts on a Mac.
  2. Open the episode’s transcript view.
  3. Use the transcript search field and enter the word or phrase you want to locate.
  4. Select a matching passage to move playback to that point in the episode.
  5. If you need to send the reference to someone else, use Apple’s transcript sharing option; Apple says a selected passage can be shared so playback starts at that point.

The qualification matters: Apple’s documentation says “when a transcript is available” in effect, and it does not establish that every episode has one. A missing transcript is therefore not evidence that the topic was absent from the audio. It may mean that the episode has no transcript in your region or app version, or that the wording in the audio differs from your query.

What the cited Spotify guidance does—and does not—say

The Spotify Search and podcast pages cited here explain podcast search, browsing, show pages, follows, saves, and downloads. They do not document a workflow for searching the transcript or spoken words of an episode. That is a limit of the published guidance considered for this comparison, not proof that no Spotify feature, accessibility service, or third-party transcription tool can ever search episode audio. For a claim about a particular Spotify release or market, verify the current in-app help and labels directly.

Which app fits your particular search?

Choose Apple’s workflow when transcript lookup is central

If your question is “Where in this episode did they say this word or phrase?”, Apple has the clearest documented path: use an available transcript on Mac, search the phrase, and jump to the matching passage. This is especially useful for long interviews, lectures, and technical discussions where the title and description are too general. Confirm that the episode actually exposes a transcript before relying on this method.

Choose either app for ordinary show or episode discovery

For finding a series by name, host, guest, category, or broad subject, both services document a workable route. Apple offers category, title, person, and topic searches plus chart and editorial discovery. Spotify offers podcast search, featured episodes, categories, and show pages. Your choice can therefore be based on the app you already use, the library you maintain, or which catalog and interface you prefer; the cited material does not establish a search-quality advantage.

Use the app with the strongest lead you already have

A known show name is more valuable than a platform preference. Start with the service where the show is available, search the show directly, and then search its episode list. If you remember only a guest, search the person’s name. If you remember only a subject, begin with a short topic phrase and broaden it when necessary.

  1. Start with the rarest clue. Try a guest, host, organization, unusual term, or distinctive phrase before a generic word such as “technology.”
  2. Run a shorter version. Remove filler words and keep the central subject or name.
  3. Try a synonym or alternate spelling. A title or transcript may use a related term rather than the wording you remember.
  4. Switch from global search to the show page. Once you identify a likely series, search its episode list instead of the entire service.
  5. Inspect descriptions and dates. Verify that the episode actually addresses your subject; a keyword in a title is not proof of substantive coverage.
  6. Use transcript search where available. On Apple’s Mac workflow, search the transcript with the exact term and then try a synonym if no passage matches.
  7. Preserve the result. Follow the show, save the episode, or download it for offline listening according to the app’s documented controls.

This sequence separates discovery from verification. A global result gives you a candidate; the show page, episode description, and—where available—the transcript help determine whether it is the episode you actually need.

Troubleshooting common search failures

No result for a topic

  • Shorten the query to the main subject or a person’s name.
  • Try a synonym, alternate spelling, or the name of a related field.
  • Search for a likely show first, then search its episode list.
  • Use category, chart, featured, or editorial browsing when the topic is broad.

The show appears, but the episode is hard to locate

  • Use the show’s own episode-list search field where available.
  • Search by guest or recurring segment instead of the general topic.
  • Apply the show page’s sorting or conditional filters if your version exposes them.
  • Check the episode title and description before assuming a similarly named result is the right one.

The transcript does not contain the phrase

  • Confirm that a transcript is available for that episode.
  • Search a shorter word or a synonym; spoken language may differ from your memory.
  • Check spelling and singular/plural forms.
  • Remember that a transcript search can only find text represented in that transcript; it cannot prove that an unindexed audio passage does not exist.

The instructions do not match your screen

The Apple iPhone guide cited for this article covers iOS 27, and the Apple Mac guide covers macOS 27. The Spotify Search page is a Canada-region support page, while the Spotify podcast page is a UK-region page. App labels, navigation, transcript availability, and other features can vary by device, software release, and market. Update the app, check the help page for your region, and follow the labels currently displayed rather than relying on an old screenshot.

What the official documentation cannot establish

It is tempting to turn a feature checklist into a ranking, but the cited pages do not report controlled tests of query relevance, catalog completeness, ranking stability, transcript accuracy, or the percentage of episodes indexed for topic search. They also do not provide a useful named statistic for comparing the two services. A result appearing in one app and not the other could reflect catalog licensing, regional availability, metadata differences, indexing timing, or query wording; the documentation alone cannot identify which explanation applies.

Accordingly, describe Apple as having a documented transcript-search route on Mac when a transcript is available, and describe Spotify as documenting podcast search and browsing. Do not claim that either service always finds more episodes, understands topics better, or returns more accurate results unless you have a separate, current source that measures that question.

The practical answer

For ordinary discovery, Apple Podcasts and Spotify both provide documented ways to search for podcasts and browse toward episodes. Apple is the more clearly documented choice when you need to locate a word or phrase inside an episode, because its Mac guide explains transcript search and passage-level playback. For every other task covered here—finding a show, exploring categories, opening a show’s episodes, or saving and downloading a result—choose the service whose catalog and library you already use. The available official guidance supports that task-based conclusion, not an overall search-quality winner.
