To bring photos and videos from supported devices into one Apple Photos library, turn on iCloud Photos with the same Apple Account on each device and allow syncing to finish. That keeps the library in sync, but it is not an independent backup: edits and deletions sync too, and Apple says iCloud Photos items are not duplicated in iCloud Backup. For recovery, keep a separate exported copy of your originals.
What “back up to Apple Photos” means
Apple Photos is the library app; iCloud Photos is the service that syncs that library across supported Apple devices, Windows, and the web. It is not a one-way upload. When you edit or delete an item on one device, that change can appear everywhere iCloud Photos is enabled.
Apple Support puts the distinction plainly: “When you turn on iCloud Photos, your photos and videos automatically upload to iCloud. They’re not duplicated in your iCloud backup, so keep backup copies of your library.” A separate export is therefore important if you want a recovery copy that will remain available after an accidental deletion or a problem with your synced library.

iPhone or iPad
- Open Settings and tap your name at the top to open your Apple Account settings.
- Tap iCloud, then Photos.
- Turn on Sync this device. Use the same Apple Account on each device you want to include.
- Leave the device connected to the internet and allow the upload to complete. A large library may take time; check the Photos sync status and available iCloud storage if it stalls.
Mac
Enable Photos in your Apple Account’s iCloud settings, or open the Photos app’s iCloud settings and turn on iCloud Photos. Choose how much of the library to keep locally:

Windows PC
Install and sign in to iCloud for Windows with the same Apple Account, then use iCloud Photos in File Explorer. You can also open iCloud.com/photos in a browser; Apple’s access guidance also describes using Microsoft Photos. Windows access provides a way to reach the iCloud library, but keep a separate export if you need an independent backup.
Make a separate copy for recovery
Because synced deletions affect the library on other devices, do not treat iCloud Photos as the only copy. Export originals to a computer or an external storage drive, such as a portable external SSD, if you want a separately retained copy. Apple documents exporting originals from iPhone or iPad to external storage and exporting Photos items from a Mac to another drive.

- Estimate the size of the library and make sure the destination has enough usable capacity.
- Check that the drive’s connector works with the device you will export from.
- Export or download unmodified originals where available, then verify that the copied files are present on the destination before relying on it.
A drive is optional for using iCloud Photos; it serves a different purpose by keeping a copy outside the synced library. No particular drive model or capacity is required by Apple’s export workflow.

Download selected items from iCloud.com
- Sign in at iCloud.com/photos.
- Select the photos or videos to download, keeping Apple’s limit of up to 1,000 items per download in mind.
- Choose the download format that suits your purpose: unmodified originals for archival use, highest resolution, or the more compatible JPEG or MP4/H.264 option.
For an archival copy, prefer unmodified originals where the option is available. A compatibility conversion may be easier to use in other apps, but it is not the same as retaining the original file.

Import directly over USB
Connect the iPhone or iPad to the computer with a USB cable, unlock it, and follow the import workflow in the Photos app on Mac or PC. If iCloud Photos is on, Apple advises downloading full-resolution originals to the device before importing to a PC; otherwise, a space-saving device copy may not be the full-resolution file you expect.
Move a Google Photos library to iCloud Photos
Eligible users can request a service-to-service copy through Google Takeout with Apple’s iCloud Photos destination. This transfer copies items; it does not delete the Google Photos copy. Before starting, enable iCloud Photos and iCloud Drive and ensure that the iCloud account has enough storage for the incoming library.

- In Google Takeout, choose the transfer option for Apple’s iCloud Photos destination and follow the account-authorization steps.
- Allow several hours to several days for the transfer to complete, depending on the library.
- Check the Photos import album and the iCloud Drive import folder afterward. Some formats, including RAW files, may be placed in iCloud Drive rather than the Photos library.
Confirm that expected items arrived before treating the transfer as complete; the Google copy remains available unless you remove it separately.
Check storage and avoid accidental loss
iCloud Photos uses iCloud storage. Apple lists 5 GB of free storage for a new iCloud signup, but the library’s actual size determines whether that is enough. Check your storage use before enabling sync for a large collection, and make room or choose a suitable storage plan if needed.

Deleting a photo or video while iCloud Photos is enabled deletes it across the devices using the service, as Apple explains: “When you delete photos and videos on one device, they’re deleted everywhere that you use iCloud Photos.” Deleted items can be recovered from Recently Deleted for 30 days; afterward they are permanently deleted. If you are unsure about a deletion, restore the item from Recently Deleted before that period ends and keep the separate exported copy for longer-term recovery.
Know which sources are supported
“Any device” has limits. Apple documents syncing on its devices, access from Windows and the web, USB importing from iPhone or iPad, and a specific Google Photos transfer route. That does not establish automatic syncing from every camera or third-party photo service. For other sources, first copy the files to a supported device or computer, then import them into Photos or upload them through an available Apple workflow.
