To use Apple Pay on an iPhone, add an eligible debit or credit card to Apple Wallet, complete any verification your card issuer requires, then authenticate when you pay. At a store, hold the top of your iPhone near a compatible contactless reader; in an app or supported website, select Apple Pay at checkout and confirm the payment. Card, merchant, device, and regional support vary.
Add an eligible card to Apple Wallet
-
Open the Wallet app and tap the add-card control.
-
Choose Debit or Credit Card, tap to continue, then scan your card or enter its details as prompted. If supported, you can also start from your card issuer’s app.

Pay at a store with your iPhone
First check that the store accepts the card’s payment network and has a contactless payment reader with NFC enabled. A contactless symbol is a useful clue, but it does not guarantee that Apple Pay will work at that terminal.
-
On an iPhone with Face ID: double-click the side button, then authenticate with Face ID or your passcode.
-
On an iPhone with Touch ID: double-click the Home button.

Apple’s guide to using Apple Pay in stores covers the device steps. On a device where another app can serve as the default contactless app, Wallet may not open automatically. In that case, open Wallet, select your card, and authenticate to pay. Apple explains how to pay when Wallet is not the default contactless app.
Pay in an app or on a website
-
At checkout, tap the Apple Pay button or choose Apple Pay as the payment method. The merchant must offer Apple Pay for the purchase.

Apple describes a code-scanning option for some purchases made in third-party browsers or on other devices. It depends on compatible devices and software, participating merchants, and market availability, so it is not a universal checkout route. See Apple’s Apple Pay purchase guide and its regional availability information for applicable details.
Check whether Apple Pay will work where you are
Support depends on several separate parties and conditions:
-
Your country or region: Apple Pay is not available everywhere, and available features can vary by market.

Apple iPhone 13, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)- This pre-owned product is not Apple certified, but has been professionally inspected, tested and cleaned by Amazon-qualified suppliers.
- There will be no visible cosmetic imperfections when held at an arm’s length.
- This product is eligible for a replacement or refund within 90 days of receipt if you are not satisfied.
- Product may come in generic Box.
-
Your issuer and card: Your bank or other issuer must participate, and the specific card must be eligible.
-
The merchant and payment route: A store needs to accept your card’s network and have NFC contactless enabled; an app or website needs to offer Apple Pay at checkout.
-
Browser and device compatibility: Some browser-based or code-scanning payment flows have additional software, device, and market requirements.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Check card eligibility with your issuer and ask the merchant about its payment options if acceptance is unclear. Apple’s availability page, published December 16, 2024, lists supported regions and notes that features can change.

What Apple says about payment privacy and security
Apple says, “Your actual card number is never shared with merchants, and each transaction uses a unique security code.” That describes Apple’s payment handling; it is Apple’s statement, not an independent audit of every payment-data practice. Read Apple’s purchase guide for its explanation of card-number handling.
In an overview dated February 18, 2021, Apple Platform Security says Apple Pay does not collect transaction information that can be tied back to the user and describes payment transactions as occurring between the user, merchant, and card issuer. This is Apple’s description of its service, not a claim about every form of payment data. See Apple Platform Security’s Apple Pay overview.
Optional: use Express Mode for supported transit cards
Express Mode is a separate option for compatible transit cards and other eligible cards, passes, or keys. When the item and transit network support it, you may be able to use it without waking or unlocking your iPhone or authenticating. Availability and setup depend on the item, network, and region; it is not the standard process for paying at a store. Apple’s Express Mode instructions describe setup and use.
