Short answer: Apple Music is the best default for households using Apple devices, especially if you want Apple Music Classical included in the same subscription. Choose TIDAL if HiRes FLAC, Dolby Atmos, a large published HiFi catalog, or DJ-software compatibility matters most. Choose Qobuz if you want hi-res FLAC streaming and the option to buy downloads that remain yours after you cancel.
All three can deliver genuinely lossless music, but the best choice depends on four practical questions: which catalog and albums you need, whether you use Apple or DJ hardware, whether you need permanent files, and whether your playback chain can carry more than Bluetooth-quality audio. Prices, trials, student offers, family plans, and availability vary by country and billing channel, so confirm the local checkout page before subscribing.
Quick verdict
| Service | Best for | Lossless format and ceiling | Defining advantage | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Music | Apple-device households and classical listeners | ALAC from 16-bit/44.1 kHz to 24-bit/192 kHz, depending on album | More than 100 million lossless songs claimed by Apple, plus Apple Music Classical included | Wireless AirPods and most Beats connections use AAC, not the full hi-res stream |
| TIDAL | Listeners who want HiRes FLAC, immersive formats, or DJ integration | HiFi lossless and HiRes FLAC, depending on release and device | More than 180 million songs in HiFi sound quality claimed by TIDAL; compatible DJ software access | Permanent ownership is not the subscription model; local pricing varies |
| Qobuz | Hi-fi users who also want to purchase files | FLAC 16-bit/44.1 kHz and 24-bit up to 192 kHz | Streaming subscription plus permanent CD-quality and hi-res purchases | Catalog overlap, app features, and availability differ by country |
There is no universal winner on sound quality. A well-mastered 16-bit/44.1 kHz release can sound better than a poorly mastered high-resolution version, and many listeners cannot reliably distinguish the formats in controlled, level-matched playback. The service that fits your library, hardware, and ownership needs is usually the better purchase.

What lossless and hi-res actually mean
Lossless is about the codec
Lossless encoding preserves the data in the source recording rather than discarding information to reduce file size. Apple Music uses Apple Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC); TIDAL and Qobuz use FLAC for their lossless tiers. A 16-bit/44.1 kHz file is CD-quality lossless: 16-bit describes the available dynamic range and 44.1 kHz describes the sampling rate.

Hi-res adds higher-resolution files
High-resolution audio generally means a file above CD parameters, such as 24-bit/96 kHz or 24-bit/192 kHz. It does not guarantee a better master, a better performance, or an audible improvement. Hi-res availability is album-specific, and an app may fall back to CD quality when a hi-res version is not offered or when a device cannot support it.
The wireless bottleneck
Apple’s support documentation states that most AirPods and Beats headphones use AAC over Bluetooth. AAC is a lossy wireless link, so it cannot carry the complete hi-res stream from Apple Music. The same principle applies to any Bluetooth setup that does not support a lossless-capable connection: the service may be receiving a lossless file, but the final radio link is not lossless. Use a wired connection and, when necessary, an external DAC to preserve the stream through the last stage.
Apple Music: the easiest choice for Apple users
Catalog and formats
Apple’s 2026 product information says more than 100 million songs are available in lossless audio at different resolutions. Apple’s lossless documentation describes most of the catalog as ALAC ranging from 16-bit/44.1 kHz CD quality to 24-bit/192 kHz. Those figures describe the service’s published availability, not a promise that every album is offered at 24-bit/192 kHz.

Apple Music includes Apple Music Classical at no separate charge. Apple promotes the Classical app as having the world’s largest classical catalog in the highest audio quality available. Classical listeners benefit from a dedicated interface for composers, works, conductors, and recordings rather than relying only on a general-population search experience.
Where Apple Music fits best
- You already use an iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, or other Apple ecosystem devices and want one account across them.
- You want a broad lossless catalog without adding a separate classical subscription.
- You value straightforward integration more than downloadable ownership.
Apple Music limitations
Apple Music is a subscription access service in the information reviewed. Downloaded tracks are for offline listening inside the app; they are not files you can keep and play independently after the subscription ends. Wireless AirPods and most Beats products also prevent you from hearing the full hi-res path, even when the source is marked lossless. For maximum quality, connect wired headphones or a wired amplifier and use a DAC that supports the selected sample rate.

TIDAL: strong for HiRes FLAC, immersive audio, and DJ workflows
Catalog and quality claims
TIDAL identifies HiRes FLAC as its high-resolution format and says it delivers more than 180 million songs in HiFi sound quality. Treat that number as TIDAL’s own catalog claim; no common independent study establishing overlap among all three services was found. HiRes FLAC availability still depends on the specific release, territory, and playback device.
Formats beyond ordinary stereo
TIDAL’s official information highlights lossless audio, HiRes FLAC, and Dolby Atmos. Dolby Atmos tracks use a different immersive mix rather than simply a higher sample rate. You need compatible software, hardware, and a version of the recording mastered for Atmos to hear that presentation; otherwise the service supplies a conventional mix.
DJ-software access
TIDAL also documents access through compatible DJ software. That makes it the practical choice for DJs who need a streaming library inside supported performance applications. Compatibility can change with software versions and licensing terms, so check the current DJ application’s TIDAL integration page before building a working setup around it.
Pricing signal and caveats
TIDAL’s 2026 pricing page lists a $6.99 student plan and advertises a free trial. The same page’s individual and family prices should be checked in your country and through the billing channel you intend to use; app-store prices can differ from direct web checkout. A free trial may require a payment method and can convert to a paid plan unless canceled under the stated terms.
Who should choose TIDAL
- You want HiRes FLAC presented as a central part of the service rather than an occasional catalog option.
- You use or plan to use compatible DJ software.
- You want Dolby Atmos releases alongside ordinary lossless stereo.
- You prefer TIDAL’s catalog and discovery tools after checking that your essential albums are available in your country.
Qobuz: the clearest answer for permanent hi-res downloads
Streaming quality
Qobuz says every subscriber receives FLAC lossless at 16-bit/44.1 kHz and high-resolution 24-bit audio up to 192 kHz. As with the other services, the maximum resolution is release-dependent. A title may stream at CD quality even when another album from the same artist is offered in 24-bit.

Purchases you keep
Qobuz sells albums and individual tracks for permanent ownership in lossless CD or hi-res quality. The purchased files are separate from subscription access, so they are the strongest fit for anyone who wants downloadable music that remains usable after a subscription ends. Store policies, file formats, and redownload rules can vary by territory; save a local backup after purchase.

Trade-offs
Qobuz’s value depends on whether the albums you care about are sold and streamed in your country. The supplied service information does not establish a universal catalog-size comparison with Apple Music or TIDAL, so check the albums and editions you actually play instead of choosing from a headline number.

Which service sounds best?
Resolution is only one variable
When the same master is used, 16-bit/44.1 kHz lossless already covers the audible range for most listening situations. Higher-resolution files can be useful for production workflows, archival preferences, or equipment that supports them, but the label alone is not proof of audible superiority. Different masters, loudness levels, equalization, headphones, room acoustics, and listener training usually have a larger effect.
Album availability matters more than totals
Apple’s and TIDAL’s catalog figures are directional signals from each company, not a neutral overlap measurement. Before choosing, search for the artists, labels, live recordings, classical editions, and regional releases you actually need. A service with fewer total songs can still be the better choice if it has your preferred masters.
How to compare fairly at home
- Choose the same album and, if possible, the same master on two services.
- Use the same wired headphones, amplifier, and DAC for both sources.
- Match volume carefully; a slightly louder version often seems better.
- Disable sound enhancements, equalizers, and normalization for the comparison.
- Switch tracks without looking at the service name, then decide whether the difference is consistent enough to matter to you.
This approach will not prove one service is universally superior, but it prevents codec labels and louder playback from deciding the result for you.

Do you need a DAC?
When the built-in output is enough
For casual listening, a phone, computer, or network player with a competent built-in converter can reproduce CD-quality lossless without an additional box. You do not need a separate DAC merely because a track is labeled lossless.
When an external DAC helps
An external DAC becomes useful when your source device has audible noise, insufficient headphone power, limited sample-rate support, or no convenient wired output. Select a model that accepts the bit depth and sample rate you intend to play, then connect it by USB or another digital path supported by your source. The DAC cannot restore information removed by Bluetooth or a lossy codec.
Headphones and speakers still dominate
Use wired headphones or a wired connection to powered speakers when evaluating hi-res audio. A high-resolution stream sent to Bluetooth headphones is converted to the headphones’ supported wireless codec, so upgrading the subscription alone may not change what reaches your ears.
How to set up lossless playback
Apple Music
- Open Apple Music’s audio-quality settings on the device you use for listening.
- Enable the lossless option and select a cellular or Wi-Fi quality level appropriate for your data plan.
- Choose the highest resolution your wired DAC or headphones can handle; selecting 24-bit/192 kHz is unnecessary if your hardware cannot accept it.
- Connect by cable, then confirm the player’s information panel reports the expected lossless or hi-res quality.
TIDAL
- Open TIDAL’s playback or audio-quality settings.
- Select the HiFi or HiRes FLAC tier when the album and device support it.
- For Atmos albums, verify that your playback chain and the selected track support Dolby Atmos before comparing it with stereo.
- If you use DJ software, sign in through the supported integration and confirm that your account tier and software version permit streaming access.
Qobuz
- Set streaming quality to the highest lossless or hi-res option your connection and hardware support.
- Check the album page for its actual resolution; do not assume every Qobuz title is 24-bit.
- For ownership, buy the album or track through Qobuz’s download store rather than saving an offline subscription cache.
- Download the purchased files and copy them to a second drive for backup.
Menu names and available choices can change with app versions and operating systems. If a hi-res option is missing, first check the specific release, account tier, region, and output device before assuming the service is malfunctioning.
Price, trials, and regional availability
The only specific price supplied for this comparison is TIDAL’s $6.99 student plan listed in 2026. Apple Music and Qobuz prices, along with TIDAL’s individual and family prices, were not stated here and can change by country, taxes, student verification, and whether you subscribe on the web or through an app store. A trial or introductory offer is not a permanent price. Compare the recurring amount shown at the final local checkout, the renewal date, and the cancellation rules.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Catalog rights also vary by territory. An album, hi-res edition, Atmos mix, download purchase, or DJ integration available in one country may be absent in another. Search your priority titles while logged into the local storefront before committing to an annual plan or buying hardware for a specific workflow.
A practical decision framework
- Start with ownership. If you need files that remain playable after canceling, choose Qobuz’s purchase store. If you only need offline listening inside an app, all three subscription models can serve that use.
- Choose your ecosystem. Apple-device households and classical listeners should start with Apple Music because of its documented Apple integration and included Classical service.
- Choose specialist features. DJs should verify TIDAL compatibility with their software; Atmos listeners should confirm supported devices and mixes.
- Check your hardware. For hi-res evaluation, plan on a wired path and a DAC that supports the desired rate. Bluetooth alone will not preserve the complete hi-res stream on common AAC headphones.
- Audit your real catalog. Search ten to twenty essential albums, including any preferred deluxe, live, classical, or regional editions, on each candidate.
- Test before paying long-term. Use a stated free trial when available, disable auto-renewal if you do not intend to continue, and compare at matched volume.
Troubleshooting common lossless problems
The app says lossless, but the headphones do not
Check whether the headphones are connected over Bluetooth. Switch to a wired connection and verify that the phone or computer is routing audio through the intended DAC rather than its internal wireless output.
A track plays at CD quality instead of hi-res
Inspect the album’s listed resolution, then check your subscription tier, country, app version, and DAC limits. Hi-res is not available for every recording, and some devices downsample unsupported rates.
Downloads stop working after cancellation
Subscription downloads are licensed offline caches, not permanent purchases. For files you can retain independently, use Qobuz’s explicitly sold downloads and maintain your own backup.
The catalog differs from a friend’s
Rights are territorial and can change over time. Confirm the country associated with each account and search the exact album edition rather than relying on an artist page or a catalog total.
The hi-res upgrade sounds no better
Match the master and volume, remove processing, and test with a wired system. If the difference remains inaudible, CD-quality lossless may already meet your needs; spend on music, headphones, room treatment, or convenience instead of paying solely for a larger number.
Bottom line
Pick Apple Music for the broadest Apple-centered experience and included classical service. Pick TIDAL for HiRes FLAC emphasis, Atmos, and compatible DJ software. Pick Qobuz when permanent FLAC purchases are as important as streaming. None is automatically the best-sounding service: the decisive factors are your country’s catalog, the masters you play, your playback chain, and whether you want access or ownership.
