Apple Music is the safer choice for Apple TV owners who specifically want officially documented lossless and Dolby Atmos playback. Apple documents Lossless ALAC on Apple TV 4K, plus Hi-Res Lossless on Apple TV 4K (3rd generation or later), when the Apple TV, tvOS version, content and HDMI-connected audio equipment support it. Spotify Premium advertises lossless FLAC up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz, but Spotify documentation does not confirm that the Apple TV Spotify app exposes lossless playback.
That does not prove Apple Music will sound better in every room. Bit depth and sample rate describe potential delivery, not a controlled listening result. Your television, receiver, soundbar, speakers, headphones, network and the particular version of a song all affect what you actually hear.
Quick verdict
Choose Apple Music if your priority is the most clearly documented high-resolution and immersive-audio path through Apple TV. Apple’s support documentation covers Lossless ALAC, Hi-Res Lossless on newer Apple TV 4K hardware, automatic Dolby Atmos selection and Apple TV Music controls.
Spotify remains a credible option if you prefer its catalog, playlists or existing subscription. Its Premium lossless specification reaches up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC across most of its catalog, but Spotify’s support material describes compatible mobile, desktop, tablet and Spotify Connect devices rather than confirming direct lossless support in the Apple TV app. Treat Spotify’s service-level specification and Apple TV playback as separate questions.

Audio formats and what Apple TV can actually play
| Service | Published maximum format | What is confirmed for Apple TV | Main qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Music | Lossless ALAC up to 24-bit/48 kHz; Hi-Res Lossless ALAC up to 24-bit/192 kHz | Apple documents Lossless on Apple TV 4K. Its separate support page identifies Hi-Res Lossless on Apple TV 4K (3rd generation or later). | Availability depends on Apple TV generation, current tvOS, song availability, network conditions and connected audio equipment. Hi-Res guidance is not perfectly aligned across Apple’s pages, so verify the option on your device. |
| Spotify Premium | Lossless FLAC up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz across most of the catalog | The reviewed Spotify pages do not specifically confirm lossless in the Spotify Apple TV app. | Spotify says third-party-device lossless requires device compatibility and quality selection through Spotify Connect. |
| Spotify Premium “Very high” | Approximately 320 kbit/s | A Spotify-wide app quality specification, not proof that an Apple TV app exposes every quality setting. | Actual output depends on the device and playback route. |
Apple describes ALAC as its lossless codec. Lossless means the encoded file preserves the source data; it does not automatically make a recording more detailed than the source or guarantee an audible difference from high-quality AAC.
Apple says its High Quality AAC setting is “virtually indistinguishable from the original sources.” That is an official description, not an independent listening-test result. No controlled side-by-side test establishes a universal winner between the two services on Apple TV.
Understanding the numbers
Bit depth describes the resolution available for each digital sample, while sample rate describes how many samples are taken per second. A 24-bit/192 kHz file therefore carries a larger technical specification than a 24-bit/44.1 kHz file, but the number alone does not tell you whether a particular master sounds better. A poor recording remains poor at a higher rate, and a well-mastered 16-bit or AAC release can sound excellent.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The service has to offer the specific version of the recording in that format. Apple notes that song availability, network conditions and speaker capability affect lossless playback. Spotify says its 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC ceiling covers most, rather than every, title in its catalog. Album versions can also differ in mastering, so comparing the same album name is not always comparing identical source material.
Apple Music on Apple TV 4K: requirements and setup
Check the hardware and connection
Apple’s current US lossless guidance says Apple TV 4K lossless playback requires a current tvOS version and an HDMI connection to an AV receiver. The receiver, television or other connected equipment must also support the format you want to hear. A standard HDMI cable is sufficient as a category; Apple’s documentation does not establish a need for a premium cable tier.
The route matters. With Apple TV connected directly to an Atmos-capable receiver, the receiver handles the supported audio format before sending video to the television. With Apple TV connected to a television and then to a soundbar through an audio-return connection, the television and return link become additional compatibility checks. A HomePod arrangement is another separate output path. Identify every device between Apple TV and your speakers instead of judging the service from the Apple TV box alone.
Apple identifies Hi-Res Lossless as available on Apple TV 4K (3rd generation or later). The Apple TV settings guide lists a Hi-Res Lossless option without stating a generation in that section, so do not assume every Apple TV 4K model can output 24-bit/192 kHz. The practical check is whether your Apple TV presents the setting and whether your output chain accepts it.
Set Apple Music audio quality
- On Apple TV, open Settings.
- Choose Apps, then Music.
- Open Audio Quality.
- Choose High Quality (AAC), Lossless (ALAC up to 24-bit/48 kHz) or, on supported hardware, Hi-Res Lossless (ALAC up to 24-bit/192 kHz).
If a tier is not shown, that is useful evidence about the current device or software configuration. Update tvOS, restart the Apple TV and check again, but do not treat a missing menu as proof that a different cable or subscription level will unlock the format. Apple’s generation qualification is especially important for Hi-Res Lossless.
Apple notes that lossless playback also depends on whether that version of the song is available, network conditions and speaker capability. A lossless setting therefore does not mean every track or every output path is currently lossless.
Understand automatic format selection
Apple says Apple TV 4K automatically plays the highest audio quality supported by the content and your home-entertainment setup. If the receiver, soundbar or television cannot accept a format, Apple TV will use a supported alternative rather than forcing the unsupported one. This automatic behavior is why the service setting and the final signal are related but not identical.

Dolby Atmos and spatial audio
Apple Music has the stronger documented Apple TV case for immersive audio. Apple TV 4K can select Dolby Atmos automatically when the song has an Atmos version and the connected equipment supports it. Apple lists these possible arrangements:
Recommended Free Tools
- One or two HomePod speakers.
- An Atmos-capable television.
- An Atmos soundbar paired with a compatible television.
- An Atmos-enabled AV receiver.
HomePod mini does not support Dolby Atmos. Compatible AirPods or Beats headphones can provide Apple Music Spatial Audio, while Atmos-capable speakers or receivers can reproduce supported Atmos content in a home-theater setup. The result still depends on the specific track and equipment.
Atmos is not simply a louder or higher-resolution stereo mode. It is a different mix that can place elements around and above the listener when the playback chain is designed for it. If a song has only a stereo version, enabling an Atmos-capable system cannot create an authentic Atmos mix. Conversely, an Atmos mix may sound less convincing in a small or poorly positioned speaker setup than a strong stereo master.
Spotify’s cited support pages establish its lossless quality and Connect requirements, but they do not provide a comparable Apple TV-specific Atmos feature inventory. Do not infer that Spotify has or lacks a particular Apple TV immersive-audio behavior from the generic lossless documentation alone.
Spotify on Apple TV: what is and is not established
Spotify’s published lossless claim
Spotify Support says Premium users can listen in up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC, “across most of the Spotify catalog.” That ceiling is lower on paper than Apple Music’s listed 24-bit/48 kHz Lossless tier and Apple’s 24-bit/192 kHz Hi-Res Lossless tier on supported Apple TV 4K hardware.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSpotify also says not all devices support lossless. For third-party devices, its guidance directs users to configure quality through Spotify Connect. The documentation does not name the Apple TV Spotify app as a confirmed lossless endpoint. Therefore, a Premium account and an Apple TV app do not, by themselves, establish that you are receiving FLAC losslessly on Apple TV.
How to interpret Spotify quality settings
Spotify’s general audio-quality table lists Premium “Very high” at approximately 320 kbit/s and lossless at up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC. These are Spotify-wide service or app specifications. They are not measurements of the signal leaving a particular television, Apple TV model or receiver.
If you use Spotify Connect, check the quality controls in the Spotify app and confirm that the destination device is listed as compatible. If Apple TV is not identified as a lossless-capable destination in your account or app, do not assume that selecting a high-quality setting changes the Apple TV output to FLAC. Connect can also change which device is doing the decoding, so an advertised account setting should not be confused with a verified Apple TV signal.
Spotify’s support pages used here are region-specific, including pages hosted for Canada and Israel. Premium benefits, settings and availability can change by country. Check the support page for your market before switching plans solely for a feature described in another region.
Apple TV features beyond audio formats
Apple’s Apple TV Music documentation lists several controls that may matter more to daily use than a maximum sample-rate number:
Rank #3
- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Lyrics: display lyrics while a song plays, where lyrics are available.
- Apple Music Sing: access Sing controls on supported songs and equipment.
- Sound Check: reduce large volume differences between songs.
- Listening history: control whether Apple TV contributes listening activity.
- AutoMix and Crossfade: manage transitions between songs.
- Dolby Atmos: use automatic Atmos selection when content and equipment qualify.
Apple specifically says AutoMix and Crossfade are unavailable when Hi-Res Lossless is turned on. That is a practical trade-off: selecting the highest-resolution Apple tier can remove transition features you may use for playlists or continuous listening. If uninterrupted transitions matter more than the maximum format, High Quality AAC or standard Lossless may fit your routine better.
Sound Check changes perceived consistency by reducing large level differences; it is not an upgrade to the source codec. Similarly, lyrics and Sing depend on supported songs, and a feature shown in the Music interface does not guarantee that every track includes the required data.
The Spotify sources establish playback quality and Connect behavior but do not provide a complete Apple TV feature inventory. Feature parity should therefore be checked in the current Apple TV app and your Spotify account rather than inferred from the audio-quality pages.

Which service will sound better?
When Apple Music has the technical advantage
- You have Apple TV 4K (3rd generation or later), current tvOS and an HDMI-connected receiver or other chain capable of the desired format.
- You want an officially documented route to Apple Lossless or, where supported, Hi-Res Lossless.
- You have Atmos-capable speakers, a soundbar, receiver or television and listen to tracks with Atmos versions.
- You are willing to trade AutoMix and Crossfade for Hi-Res Lossless.
When Spotify may be the better practical choice
- Your playlists, recommendations and listening history are already centered on Spotify.
- Your preferred playback route is a Spotify Connect device that explicitly reports lossless compatibility.
- Your equipment cannot accept or reveal the additional Apple Music formats, making the service-level ceiling less important.
- You value Spotify’s existing app experience more than Apple TV-specific format documentation.
Do not choose solely from “24-bit/192 kHz” versus “24-bit/44.1 kHz.” A compatible source recording, a transparent playback chain, speaker quality, room acoustics and your own hearing determine whether a difference is audible. Apple’s AAC statement also illustrates why a technically lower format can still sound excellent in normal listening.
Three common room setups
Television speakers: If Apple TV feeds ordinary built-in television speakers, the audible benefit of a higher-resolution tier may be limited by the speakers and television processing. Choose on interface, catalog and convenience unless the television explicitly supports the desired Atmos mode.
Soundbar: Check whether the soundbar and television both support Atmos and whether the HDMI route passes it. A soundbar can reproduce an Atmos mix, but the result depends heavily on its design and room calibration. Apple’s automatic selection still requires compatible content.
Receiver and separate speakers: This is the clearest environment for testing Apple’s documented lossless path. Connect Apple TV 4K by HDMI to a compatible receiver, update tvOS, inspect the Audio Quality menu and confirm the receiver’s reported input format. Even here, mastering and speakers matter more than a number printed in a specification table.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Troubleshooting an Apple TV lossless or Atmos setup
The lossless option is missing
- Confirm that the Apple TV is an Apple TV 4K and update tvOS.
- Recheck Settings > Apps > Music > Audio Quality.
- For Hi-Res Lossless, verify the model generation; Apple identifies 3rd-generation-or-later Apple TV 4K hardware on its lossless support page.
- Check the song’s available version and your network connection.
- Trace the HDMI route and verify that the receiver or television is the actual connected output.
Atmos is not playing
- Confirm the track has an Atmos version.
- Verify that the television, soundbar, receiver or HomePod arrangement supports Atmos.
- Check the HDMI path and receiver input settings.
- Do not expect Atmos from HomePod mini.
- Try a known Atmos track rather than assuming every album or playlist item has an immersive mix.
Spotify does not show lossless on Apple TV
That behavior is consistent with the documentation available here: Spotify’s lossless page does not specifically confirm the Apple TV app. Check whether your destination is a listed compatible Spotify Connect device and whether the app exposes a lossless control for that destination. If it does not, use the quality level the app actually reports instead of assuming the Premium service ceiling is being delivered.
The comparison sounds unfair
Match volume before switching services. A slightly louder stream is often perceived as better even when the underlying quality is unchanged. Use the same album, the same track version where possible and the same input on your receiver. Disable extra processing temporarily, then re-enable features such as Sound Check or room correction one at a time so you know what changed.
Cost, equipment and buying decisions
Neither service’s support pages provide a universal subscription price for every country, and the captured Spotify pages are region-specific. Compare the plans shown in your own country rather than relying on a price from another market. Family, student and promotional eligibility can also change the practical cost.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Equipment spending should follow the bottleneck in your system. If Apple’s documented setup requires an HDMI connection to an AV receiver and you do not already have one, an ordinary compatible HDMI cable is a legitimate accessory need. The documentation does not justify paying extra for a premium cable tier. A compatible Atmos receiver, soundbar or speaker system can matter, but buying one only makes sense if your room, television and listening habits support it.

A practical decision checklist
- Identify your Apple TV model and update tvOS.
- Trace the output route: Apple TV to television, soundbar, receiver or HomePod speakers.
- Check whether that route accepts lossless and Atmos formats.
- On Apple Music, inspect the Audio Quality menu and note which tiers are offered.
- On Spotify, verify the destination’s compatibility and available Connect quality controls.
- Check whether the particular album or track has the version you want, including an Atmos mix when relevant.
- Test the same recording at a comfortable, matched volume; avoid treating louder playback as better sound.
- Try High Quality AAC, Lossless and any available Hi-Res setting separately, noting that Hi-Res disables AutoMix and Crossfade.
- Keep the service whose catalog, interface and controls you prefer if the technical difference is not audible in your setup.
Frequently asked questions
Is Apple Music better than Spotify on Apple TV?
Apple Music has the stronger officially documented case for Apple TV lossless and Dolby Atmos playback. That does not guarantee a universal audible advantage. Your Apple TV generation, output equipment, track version and listening environment determine the result.
Does Spotify support lossless on Apple TV?
Spotify documents Premium lossless up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC and discusses compatible third-party devices and Spotify Connect, but the cited support page does not specifically confirm lossless in the Apple TV app. Verify what your app and destination report.
Does Apple Music have Dolby Atmos on Apple TV?
Yes, Apple documents automatic Dolby Atmos selection on Apple TV 4K when the content and connected equipment support it. Possible arrangements include an Atmos television, compatible soundbar and television, Atmos receiver or one or two HomePod speakers. HomePod mini does not support Dolby Atmos.

What Apple TV do I need for Apple Music Hi-Res Lossless?
Apple’s lossless support page identifies Apple TV 4K (3rd generation or later) for Hi-Res Lossless. Apple’s settings guide lists the option separately, so check the actual Audio Quality menu on your device and confirm that the connected equipment accepts the format.
Does Hi-Res Lossless work through any HDMI cable?
Apple documents an HDMI connection to an AV receiver for Apple TV 4K lossless playback and does not specify a premium cable brand or tier. Use a standard compatible HDMI cable and focus on whether the receiver, television and complete signal path support the format.
Why can’t I use AutoMix or Crossfade?
Apple says AutoMix and Crossfade are unavailable when Hi-Res Lossless is enabled. Switch to High Quality AAC or standard Lossless if those transition controls are more important to you.
Will 24-bit/192 kHz always sound better than Spotify’s 24-bit/44.1 kHz?
No. Those are maximum format specifications, not a listening-test result. Mastering, speakers, room acoustics, playback processing and hearing all affect audibility. A high-quality AAC stream can sound excellent, and a higher-resolution file cannot improve a poor source.
Can I use HomePod mini for Apple Music Atmos?
No. Apple specifically identifies HomePod mini as not supporting Dolby Atmos. Use supported HomePod speakers or another Atmos-capable television, soundbar or receiver arrangement.

Should I switch services just for lossless?
First check whether your Apple TV model and output chain can use the format and whether the relevant catalog versions are available. If your system cannot expose the difference, playlists, recommendations, lyrics, Sing, transitions and overall app preference may be more important than the published ceiling.

No. Spotify advertises up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC and describes compatible devices and Spotify Connect, but the cited support information does not specifically confirm the Apple TV app as a lossless endpoint.
What is Apple Music’s maximum listed format?
Apple’s Apple TV Music settings list Hi-Res Lossless ALAC up to 24-bit/192 kHz, while standard Lossless is up to 24-bit/48 kHz. Hardware and output-chain support still apply.
Does Dolby Atmos require special Apple TV settings?
Apple TV 4K can automatically select Atmos when the track and connected television, soundbar, receiver or HomePod arrangement support it. Confirm the HDMI path and use a track with an Atmos version.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why did enabling Hi-Res Lossless remove transitions?
Apple says AutoMix and Crossfade are unavailable when Hi-Res Lossless is enabled. Use another audio-quality tier if those controls are essential.
Can ordinary TV speakers reveal the difference between these services?
They may not. Speaker limitations and television processing can outweigh the difference between published codec specifications. Test at matched volume before changing services.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Apple Music is the better-documented Apple TV choice for lossless and Dolby Atmos, especially with Apple TV 4K (3rd generation or later), current tvOS and an HDMI-connected capable receiver or speaker system. Spotify Premium’s published ceiling is up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC, but Apple TV app lossless delivery is not specifically confirmed. Choose Spotify when its playlists and ecosystem matter more, or when your playback route does not expose Apple’s extra formats.
